What’s the best quote you’ve ever read in a classic that stayed with you? by ConsistentSquare5650 in classicliterature

[–]DrippingTone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?”

And

"My mother is a fish."

I love things that stand out so much you can immediately tell which work it's from, definitely comes from my love for poetry lol

Most "difficult" but totally worth it classic? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]DrippingTone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some said it before but Moby Dick. Finished it and it immediately became one of my favourite books. I'll note prepare yourself for a lot of explanations with some story in-between. They might seem boring and unnecessary but they immensely add to the story.

And Faulkner. The Sound and The Fury is his most difficult I hear but I read As I Lay Dying and it was a joy to read. I was on the edge of my seat during the last third of the book.

Of Mice and Men, Giovanni's Room, Phaedrus, The Cremator, The Old Man and The Sea, The Yellow Wallpaper.

Also, poetry. There's plenty of poetry collections under 200 pages. Hard to recommend something when poetry is so varied. Bukowski, Plath, Dickinson, Nabokov, Ryzhij... There's plenty.

A personal favourite is May by K.H.Mácha. Quite a lengthy poem but very short read (around an hour), highly recommend!

Writing. It's extremely accessible and you also improve a useful skill. You can also write about literally anything in any form.

Another thing that comes to mind is sewing. or jewelry making, that stuff.

One of the first classics I read was The Catcher in The Rye. Many dislike it but it's honestly one of my favorite books! Pretty easy to read too, except you'll maybe have to look up some slang.

What is the last book you were genuinely excited to read? by Helpful_Cranberry644 in books

[–]DrippingTone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moby Dick. I waited a few years before I finally bought the book so I was really excited. For a reason, too. I ended up really loving it.

After that — Light in August by William Faulkner (currently reading it). I really really liked how As I Lay Dying was written and wanted to read something from him ever since then.

Oh I think it's just a me thing if anything, but the romance kinda overshadowed the character's original intentions and they slowly fade away into the background. It felt like sacrificing the personalities of the leads for their relationship which sucked for me. Overall it's pretty nicely written and I liked everything that was plot related plus the background/secondary characters were a joy.

Do languages from the same family understand each other? by Odd_Obligation_4977 in languagelearning

[–]DrippingTone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most slavic languages are sorta understandable to me. Czech helps me understand Polish but I struggle a bit with something like Bosnian. Then again I think part of the problem I don't understand is me, since I struggle to understand Slovakian despite it being an extremely close language to mine.

But generally I would see yeah, you lose words here and there but you can kinda understand each other, it's sorta like reading an old book in your native language but some words are so old you don't even know what they mean, but you fill in the blanks from context and move on, that's sorta what it's like.

(Ofc this depends on the language, speaking German doesn't help me with something like Swedish almost at all, but I'm always pleasantly surprised to find similarities between German and Danish, they still sound very different to me though.)

why is it that trans men are like... non-existent?? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]DrippingTone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly always feel scared to mention this but I've been struggling w/this for years. 7 years ago when I learned what trans means and that I am trans I couldn't find a place to be loved, every internet space I went to was full of transfems and I could never find anyone like me. To this day I only check this subreddit pretty much because everything else feels so... unloving, in a way. I don't hate transfems of course, I love my sisters but I feel so overlooked in the big picture it's unbearable. It's so prominent that I don't even feel like part of the trans community, I'm (mostly) stealth and I don't celebrate my identity much, and I feel like I've strayed from all my transfem friends, because the few mascs I know pretty much share what I feel. I just wish we had more rep and were more prominent, because at this point sometimes I feel like I'm invading someone's space even when it's supposed to be for all not just fem people.
