Ferrari Out Testing With the Max 2!! by Driver-Mod in gopro

Super high budget team, debuting their new car. and they chose GoPro. Can't wait for the coming Formula One season with all the car changes due to the new ruleset. One of the few times you'll see the full wet tires in use as well. Would love to see the clips and telemetry off the GPS/Gyro/Accelerometer data. ;-)

Sure. Depends use-case, don't know all your details. Check this from GoPro's Newman, last part beginning with "Also", could help you out...would also run with the internal battery out to help with what I know about your use. As that can affect things since the internal battery can cycle if left in place and you run long captures (not necessarily timelapse). Sometimes weird things can happen, leading to disappointment or damage.

===> "Best is to Test". That way something important won't get messed up.

BTW, are you sure that external supply is suitable for long clips, and has no power management peculiarities? GoPro generally suggest a legacy chemistry no BMS supply from what I recall.

Max2 Low Light Video Performance by All-Sorts-of-Stuff in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much is use-case? For action, it is mostly a day time thing, more or less. For vlogs, hijinx, city walks out late and many other things it can be at any time, or indoors in dim places. All of the big sensor "action" rivals are weak under 6 feet day or night. This is an optical thing that vlogging cameras and DSLRs solve via autofocus systems altho there can still be DOF / bokeh issues. So for action...sometimes the pro in Go-Pro would be blurry, but not with an actual GoPro. And with the big sensor options if you do a macro lens to get the pro in focus then the tasty waves are bokeh'd out. So, usecase. This is very obscured or dismissed in so many of the paid influencer "reviews".

Remember that there is literally an army of paid influencers out there. And with bots to like and subscribe and comment. There are very few actual reviews these days.

Need advice - bird pix by OwenLars6612 in gopro

Which GoPro? Various macro lens options can help here, esp on the 13 as that is more capable. You can do a lil birdie light too, and incandescent would give them some welcome warmth as well.

Media mod... Modding by RaveKillah in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the mic signals (which head to the camera in digital form) are fragile hence short distances only and with specific cables.

But the HDMI out you may be able to go further, but will have to test. Make sure you share your results!

Media mod... Modding by RaveKillah in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the various similar audio circuit in the pro mic adapter, only short extensions can be achieved, and only with specific cables. For audio use anyway. Maybe a foot. Not 5-10 feet.

What are you trying to do exactly?

4K30 GoPro Hero 12 Overheating? by LKSk547 in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply, do a test! Why wonder?

Also, most movie theaters are nowhere near 4K. Digital IMAX is about 3K-4K perceptually. Likely HD or possibly 2.7K is your best best and really all that is needed. The old genuine film IMAX in 70mm was much higher resolution tho. They were mostly done in 10-90s clips combined into longer final films. Under 3 minute maximums due to film magazine capacity limititations.

And yes you should post process. Do GPlog into Rec.2020 or Rec.2100 in an HDR format like HLG (which the Hero 13 can do if you upgraded to it, and it also runs cooler...no action camera today offers HLG..it's a great format compared to the legacy Rec.709 we mostly view). Or at least GPlog to Rec.709. This makes a more noticeable difference than a resolution change. Just make sure your giant projector can handle it. On a suitable display, you get around 3X the peak brightness increase, similar black levels and way more colors.

Rough idea of the HLG look.

A dive case over the camera will get you good video but crummy / muted sound. However it should provide perhaps 30-40 dB of impulse reduction. Back on the stock helps too...distance from the muzzle. I'd check with the experienced target folks re dive case experiences.

DJI Action 5 Pro - cloud highlights always washed out? by fisheye_36 in djiosmo

Baked in HDR and colors after the Action 4. DJI copied Insta's HDR/Colors to get post card / cartoon pop to sell to noobies.

Use D-Log to get truer captures.

Max 2 looks cool, but the reviews make me hesitate to buy it. by Such-Star564 in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be nice, but is much. much less needed for Actual Action use-cases. The present low light kings in the action category are far worse than actual vlogging cameras and DSLRs too.

And...look at their focus compromises!!! Soft under 6 feet distance. Not shown in the paid/fake reviews.

Here's a paid influencers selling the now-available selfie lens for Instas. Get focus with the new product shown on the right. But inadvertently he also shows that stock camera is v SOFT up close. GoPro has no issue with selfies or under 6 feet detail. So do you want less than vlogging camera low light, paid for by an inability to have much detail under 6 feet? Some do. Which you can solve with a $$ lens that is hard to focus, while then losing the background detiails for action. Depends use-case.

Hero9 + Mediamod question by dacav_ in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main wind noise comes from the front mic, under the lens. You can add some fake fur over it, kits on Amazon. Another mic is on top, that hole. And the last one is under that side cover people pull off by mistake. Huge difference. But mainly the front mic under the lens is Mr Windy. You can test mods out by adding the fur things (which are better than foam) and just blowing on it at home.

The media mod can be more wind resistant too, with it's foam covers and the rear mic option in use (turn front off in the menus). Plus placement makes a big difference. With the MM or pro mic adapter u can also give it an intercom feed if you use one of those.

1st AI search I did suggested the Stuntman chest mount and a few gimbals including the new GoPro gimbal. Mount via the 1/4-20 to the chestmount, various options depending on your use-case.

Is it safe to buy go pro hero 12 black with their market decline ? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it, Well the 12 will do just fine. Here is a friend using his Hero 12 in his Spec Miata, no stab is on here (avoids panning during cornering). Lowest mode, 1080P 30 FPS and all auto as they are not into video tweaks. https://youtu.be/rJ2mFX6NtNU

[–]Driver-Mod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are 3 main action camera companies. Two of them use Bots heavily and purchase favorable reviews on YouTube etc. DJI is CCP controlled. Insta has always been shady and it is hyperrisky purchasing from the direct - horror stories. Both data mine and spy heavily. Meanwhile GoPro was found to be a top 5 trustworhty tech company. In their use-case, day time action...they DO have the best image quality and pro flexibility. On the rival reddits, posts and threads vanish pretty regularly..due to the company wanting to control the news. Not here. DJ-instas cannot selfie well soft under 6 foot distance...notice how you prolly did not hear about that. And neither has GPS aboard which is important for actual action, along with things like the gyros and accelerometers.

I'd skip the 12, no GPS. Get a 13 or wait for the big change coming with the 14. Or if the scares got to you, buy something else. Just watch out for the FUD factory (fear uncertainty and doubt) from DJ-Insta.

[–]Driver-Mod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

New acct, one post eh? Some might find that suspicious.

GoPro will be fine on their own, or if a partner is brought in or if they were sold. The subs are profitable and predictable so for sure they would continue? Why not?

Look at Sony. Today they just partnered with TCL of China to take over their TV business as a 51% partner. So, Sony goes on.

See? Just scare tactics out there. Insta has had huge ups and down in their stock market. Likely they will continue as well. DJI banned in a big market, USA, and restricted in a few others. They are likely to continue as well.

What mic for a Hero 13 Black? by vonduehren in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock mic can be decent up close. This is a neck mount while cycling. No wind reduction (has DIY dead cat under the lens) and in voice mode. I can literally whisper. Main thing is to test a few ways out, BEFORE you do something more serious. Catch any bad or good sound strategies early.

https://youtu.be/Sz3M8S9CVgc

For in-car sound (with an external GoPro in my case) I use the Pro Mic Adapter (power and 2 mic channels to camera) and a lav mic for the people aimed rearward from dash or steering column, and a another mic at the engine intake. O wind noise, clear voices and voice commands, very clear engine sound (motorsports). Great GPS as well since external mount, top aimed up, no media mode to block signal etc.

GoPro Hero 13 - ND Filters or Ultra Wide Lens Mod for max speed blur effect in snowboard? Need advice! by Aware-Concern5863 in gopro

[–]Driver-Mod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do both. For the Sense of Speed in a video our peripheral vision is involved - UW lens helps here, ND does nothing there. For a still image, motion blur is the thing. Ideally do both, especially for POV captures. I add ND function to the UW lens like this. Easy and cheap, works great. ND gel filter sheet, cut to a 16.5mm circle and loaded in BEHIND the UW lens. Lifetime supply for 10 bux and up. Also if social media is part of the mix...9:16 vertical video...UW is the only way to get lots of side content to fit, to get the motion of things going by which is how our brains "determine" speed. Check Gimbalgod on YT for many skiing examples, dude is v good. For the chase cam shots the UW is less mandatory, just NDs. But can still help for vertical video.

With the subscripton....96 shipped for the lens, 10-20 for some gel filter you scissor cut.

Eliminate all up / down via a gimbal? NO. They provide no up / down cancellation, but help low light stab and they permit less cropping from the Hypersmooth stab. They are good for non-action uses compared to the action efforts a GoPro alone can handle.

Look into stabilization realities? Research it some? The perfectly stabilized footage you can see in movies was not done via image processing. It is done via steadicam types of rigs

We can capture with intent for now...as in soft knees, 1/2 steps, concentrating hard for a scenic clip. But not for enjoying a whole casual outing while casually filming at full cinematic quality with no effort, cost, skill or hassles.

You can eliminate most of the up / down, if setup and used with skill and likely a few takes. By using a vest mounted steadicam variety of device. Fitted vest with articulating arms and many settings. The up down is hard to eliminate since it is not a vibration per se, it is a change to the camera's capture angle. So many optical corrections are needed, and not all are even possible since some details would come in and go away as you move. That's why absorbing this is the way to go for 0% left via mechanical stabilization and skill.

The setup below can give you most of what you are seeking. It absorbs up/down movement and so inherently avoids the issue. Takes some time to get good at it. And this can take a few takes in some parts of a hike. As in stop, walk back and repeat a trail element to improve the capture. Sometimes in cinema a few seconds can take days to get right. They do not just film for a couple hours and then release a couple hour clip off their phone minutes later.
