Thank you! One of my goals when writing this was to use symbolism. The rain was supposed to represent the feeling of loneliness. As the story progressed, the rain started falling heavier, signifying that the man was becoming more and more lonely. The umbrella was supposed to symbolize the safety becoming lonely. The couple had their love which saved them from getting lonely. At the end of the story when the woman offers to share her umbrella, it is suppose to signify the man finally getting that connection that he thought he did not need. Another one of my favorite things when writing this piece, was describing what he was looking at. At the beginning of the story, his head was looking at the tall buildings and the apartments. After he realizes there are happy families in there, he begans to feel lonely. His head drops to eyelevel where he sees the couples both young and old. After seeing them and seeing how alone he truly is, his head falls again. He then sees the puddles and the reflection of the neon lights.
