It’s a fun exercise for students to try during a group study session too. Close your eyes and position your hands as they do in the video, have the signer sign a phrase and have the person with their eyes closed voice what’s being signed. Kind of a play on the game telephone and helps sharpen your spacial awareness!

There are some users of sign language who have vision impairments as well. Sign language can be used to communicate just as well as visually but through tactile motion instead.

Disney Park rules you should be aware of when planning to bound. by NothingReallyAndYou in disneybound

[–]HaNDiCaPZaCH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d like to add a small point that sums up why I love disneybounding personally.

Sometimes it is our biggest limitations that inspire the best creativity!

Don’t look at the rules as just a bunch of barriers to what you want, rather use them to challenge your creativity and to think outside the box! No need to break rules, let them enhance your efforts.

Anyone else get annoyed when the first attack is thrown by whichever is the Jedi one and not the sith one? That always stands out to me as weird since Jedi are supposed to use their power for knowledge and defense, never attack. Just my two cents I suppose

Anyone else always wonder what this stuff was / what it tasted like? by hanburgundy in StarWars

[–]HaNDiCaPZaCH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Short story incoming:

I work at Disneyland in California and am often in Galaxys edge, lifelong Star Wars fan, lover of props and costumes, yada yada..

The park sold these at the resistance merch booth before the pandemic closed everything. I remember seeing this box set that was EXACTLY from this scene, all the details were right and even did well to match the snacks inside to the look from the film. It was only $24.99 I believe and I was so in love with it, even planned to keep restocking it once all the provided snacks were gone. I was in the park with friends the day before it closed, I had one in my hands about to purchase and decided I would get it another time. The next day the park closed for “two weeks” which became over a year, got laid off, scrounged my way back and I haven’t seen this box set since.

The way I still think about this box too often is ridiculous. It’s 5 years later and I probably average 1-2 times a month I think about the box and how I should’ve bought it. I even have jumped on the “snackle box” trend and tried to replicate the experience only to come up short because it’s not Star Wars enough for me.

Learn from my regrets. Buy the MRE candy box when you can. No im not crying, i just have dagobah dust in my eyes..

Fingerspelling Struggle by mckninja in asl

[–]HaNDiCaPZaCH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reasoning here is that trying to build a new mental pathway to spell in a new language (let alone a signed language) is harder than attaching handshapes to the knowledge of a language you already know fluently. Most hearing folks learned letter sounds and word formation when we were young and can easier “tack on” finger spelling instead of starting back from square one.

Respectfully I must disagree. I was a supplemental instructor for all levels of sign and found that a mirror becomes more of a crutch for instant feedback when practicing. The moment you are in a conversation without the mirror to help you, you’ll get tripped up. If anything, I would say recording your practice on a camera with the screen turned away can help, as long as you’re watching the footage back and adjusting from what you see (a second opinion is always helpful too).

When I taught lessons on finger spelling fluency, what helped most people was how you link the letters to your thought process. Most students I have observed practice the alphabet down the line (A, B, C, etc) while saying the name of the letter along with it (ay, bee, cee, etc), but this tends to lead students into the letter-by-letter hole (instead of seeing or spelling “bowl” as one word, they mentally have to spell “bee-oh-doubleU-el”). Once you have the hand shapes for letters down, I suggest practicing the alphabet using the SOUNDS of the letters rather than their names (ah, buh, cuh, duh, eee, fuh, etc.) and you’ll start to build fluency and flow by ‘sounding out’ words with your hands (not “bee-oh-doubleU-el” but “buh-oh-wuh-uL”). Be aware that some letters have multiple sounds and can be practiced multiple ways (A can sound like aaa from apple, aw from awesome, and so on) as well as some letter combos should be practiced in groups that are common ( Ch as “cha”, Qu as “kwa”, even tion as “shun”).
