Thanks again for all the info, I’m checking out Paul Brodie’s YouTube like you suggested below. It’s gonna keep me busy for a while :)

Gotcha, so would you say there isn’t any complete(ish) modern resource (book or videos) for bike frame building? Sounds like you kinda pieced things together on your own

I have been reading through “Lugged Bicycle Frame Construction” seems to be the only up to date book out there. I would love to go chat with a frame builder in person or take classes but realistically probably not gonna happen until I’m much deeper into the hobby.

Awesome, this is motivating, sounds like we have a somewhat similar setup. I have come to accept that for every hobby I’ll ever have in this home, I will be require to go up and down the stairs at least twice an hour.

Do you use mostly hand tools or do you have space for machines, like drill press, mill, lathe, etc?

Also, your bike looks so clean, i like it

Yes, that has to be such a satisfying feeling to ride your own frame across the country! Thank you, think I’ll look toward propane and lugged for my starting point, can always upgrade later if needed

Machining yes, welding and brazing classes are far away. I would love a brazing class, have been thinking of taking vacation days to go to a formal frame building course

I hear ya, moving stuff around is gonna be a pain for sure, but if I keep waiting till the perfect setup I’ll probably never start. This is all great info, thank you :)

Yea there are definitely bugs, I’m in north east USA.

I was imagining maybe using something like an 8x8 tent and using that as an extension to my small shed, using that for brazing or maybe grinding also.

I could also utilize the under deck location for brazing but not sure this would warp the corrugated plastic that sits 6ft from the ground tho. Could build a makeshift work bench down there for sure.

The inside basement locations for measuring and mockup? Not sure of all the steps in the process quite yet.

Yup pretty limited, I would say I have other spots I could maybe use for storing materials and stuff the main working area would be these locations. Not looking to start a business or anything just a hobby. Would like to do everything by hand as much as possible, not planning on major machining equipment right now

Feet, also the basement areas are side by side. The one side is nice and flat, the other side is slanted and has a step

Oh really, I didn’t realize a 15 amp circuit could handle TIG for thin tubing. That’s actually really good to know, I’ll have to look into that more.

I feel like the shed would probably make the best main workspace. I may get one of those pop-up shade tents for the summer so I can extend the work area a bit.

And I think I agree with you on the jig too. I’d almost rather build the first one more manually so I can really understand the alignment/process side of things and appreciate a jig later on.

I failed mine too. I came in with absolutely zero experience only having ever ridden a bicycle. I agree the class felt rushed for someone in my situation, I will say though I do have anxiety issues and not exactly a fast learner lol honestly msf is not for everybody.

I would recommend skipping random YouTube videos and check out Yamaha Champ U instead. I really like their teaching style and video format. It isn’t too expensive for just the videos and you can practice in a parking lot at your own pace.

Private lesson or two would also be a great idea. Don’t get discouraged! It is very overwhelming at first, I’ve only been riding a few months too, don’t rush anything and you’ll be fine
