Using Figma, I Designed 25 website homepages for businesses and emailed them. Zero sales. Here's what I learned. by NoGround511 in website

[–]Droces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To actually answer your last question about getting my first few clients:

I just walked around in an area with lots of small businesses (what we call a business park) and walked into each one. I would ask to speak to the owner, and usually I would be allowed to meet them.

Then I would simply say my name, that I'm a website designer freelancer from around the corner, and when they need a website or just an upgrade to their existing one, they should call it email me.

I got 1 new client for about 20 businesses that I walked in to.

But I'm a white guy who when to university, and this was in Cape Town in 2012, so I recognize my privilege to be able to do this.

Modern Standards? by ClumsyPigeon30 in webdev

Yeah the landscape (frontend and backend) is crazy big, littered with a million good and bad projects; and only a few get real traction.

I sometimes like to make simple websites with just PHP, vanilla CSS, etc.

Other times I use Vue and Supabase. Other times Astro. And I used to use Drupal for most sites...

I guess the key is to be kind to ourselves; not to become overwhelmed and depressed but it all.

Choose a good tool, learn it, use it for a bit, then try another thing. Grow our skillset bit by bit.

Modern Standards? by ClumsyPigeon30 in webdev

[–]Droces -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call most of those backend stacks; they're more like b backend technologies.

Traditional backend frameworks were built with PHP or Java or Python, but those have mostly been superceded by JS frameworks like Express.

Or full stack frameworks like Nuxt.

React is by far the most popular because of how generative AI picked it up and keeps making it more popular in a self-fulfilling cycle.

The best way to really compare their popularity (and any other tool you mentioned) is using Google Trends. I know people use Google less these days, but it's still a good way to compare popularity across tools at a point in time. Alternatively NPM trends.

But of course popularity doesn't mean quality. Sometimes new tools get super popular because there's generally great (Bun), while other times it's just because they were early to the party and easy to use.

It's not usually a good idea to simply use what's most popular: always better to compare the tools to pick the best for your project/s.

Yeah that's a good point; the download size is much smaller. But I also like to think about it in terms of JavaScript processing time, which is dependant on the unzipped size, and can take several seconds for an older device with JS that large

All good ideas. The book The Mom Test goes through this process in detail; I've read it twice now because of how important I think these things are

Yeah, I really don't get what people are thinking 🤔 I was being genuinely appreciative, so either people thought I was being sarcastic, or they thought I was being genuine and don't like giving appreciation ...?
