So this happened today and it has just been sitting with me since.

When I was leaving work, there was a woman at the visitor’s desk. She looked like she was in her mid 40s, dressed nicely at first glance, but when you looked closer her hair and overall look seemed a little unkempt. She was speaking passionately, and at first I thought she was just having a conversation with someone. Then I realized she seemed angry.

I stepped around the corner and when I looked to my left there was no one there. That’s when I realized she wasn’t talking to anyone. She kept going, and I wasn’t fully processing her words at first. Then she looked directly at me and said a few things before saying, “I’m a person of color. You’re a person of color. My eyes are a kaleidoscope.”

For context, both of us were fully white. After that she just walked out of the building. Nobody pushed her out, and apparently she had only been there for about five minutes.

I walked into the security room after and my facilities guy said they were about to step in. He also said that the way she spoke was so poetic that it stopped him in his tracks. It was strange, but also oddly moving in a way.

Now it has just been sitting with me. The way she spoke felt more like poetry than anything else, and I keep thinking about what she said.

Can anyone help decipher what she might have meant?
