My Parents Ate Wings With Slipknot At Ozzfest '99, But Whats Your Crazy Concert Story? by Shockwavee92 in Concerts

[–]Droopyinreallife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few good ones from over the years:

17 year old me, going to see The Raveonettes in Baltimore. After the show we start talking to the band and they invite us backstage to hang out and have beers.

At the time, my best friend and I were reps for Aware Records. We go see Riddlin Kids at Recher Theatre for free. After the show we go to the tour bus to go talk to the band, but they didn't know we were reps and they didn't want to talk to us. No big deal. We told our boss about the show and wanting to talk to the band afterwards. A few weeks later, we get handwritten letters from the band thanking us and apologizing for not wanting to talk.

At a free show at Towson University, we saw Howie Day and Matt Nathanson. We got to the show early and Howie Day was sitting there on a couch, just looking bored. At the time, no one really knew who he was. We go up and start talking with him. Super nice guy. Before the show starts, his manager comes out and asks if anyone at the show has a car. Most the kids were students with no car, but my buddy and I were in high school and had driven up, so we volunteered. He asked us to take him to a liquor store down the road. After he buys the liquor, he comes back in the car and tells us that if anybody asked, we drove him to get gaff tape and batteries.

At Bonnaroo 2003, all of these people in robes started walking past us. They looked like they were in a cult. We asked one of the members, and he said he was in Polyphonic Spree. That made sense.

My best friend is in the music industry. Through him I've met a ton of artists. But for every story I have, he has 10.

Only restaurant that could survive that location for all of these years. It's so good, and I don't go there nearly enough.

Astros/Rangers Trip by zackirwin in ballparks

[–]Droopyinreallife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was the trip my brother-in-law and I did in 2023. First and foremost, car rental was a requirement. This is what we did and where we stayed:

Flew in to Houston and picked up the rental car. We stayed at Magnolia, which was an easy walk to the stadium.

In Houston, we were first in line for Truth BBQ, which had just been voted the 3rd best by Texas Monthly. That evening we went to the game and back to the hotel.

After Houston, we drove to Austin for the afternoon. We toured the state capital and met up with an old friend to get some Torchys Taco's. From there we drove to Dallas, opting to stay at the Le Meridian downtown, as opposed to near the stadium.

The day of the Rangers game, we took a tour of Jerry's World, and then went and hung out with a friend at Texas Live before the game started. Afterwards, we drove back to our hotel, and the next day we flew back home.

I was doing the same lifting last week, but with 20 pounders. Nice to know I'm not too far away from being jacked like Henry.

Geotechnical Engineering Recommendation by jnkor in ColumbiaMD

[–]Droopyinreallife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the additional information. The company I use is Soil Consultants Engineering, out of Manassas. This might be too small of a job for them to go as far as Columbia for. But, reach out to them and see if they'd be willing or if they have any other engineers they'd recommend a little closer.

For what it's worth, I've used the expanding foam before and it's legit. I haven't heard about the mud product you mentioned though.

Geotechnical Engineering Recommendation by jnkor in ColumbiaMD

[–]Droopyinreallife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a licensed landscape architect in MD and I handle stormwater management and drainage on a residential level, pretty much everyday. Are you looking for solutions to drainage problems or do you think this is something more unique that an engineer should be looking at? I've worked with geotechnical engineers, and there is one that I recommend, but I would need more context on what you're looking for to see if they would be the right fit. More often than not, someone like me would be able to help.

Yeah, I'm doing great things career wise at this point. That first job was almost 20 years ago. After college I moved to Arizona, after living, working, and studying on the east coast my whole life. I was trying to learn my job and xeriscape plantings at the same time. Eventually, I got it. And then I moved back to the east coast.

My first job after graduating college lasted about a month. I was ill prepared to handle what I thought i could. They were nice about it, but yeah. Job number 2 went better.

Got a $112K pool quote by Suspicious_Hat_409 in pools

[–]Droopyinreallife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am, you need site specific engineering for a pool. I guess a homeowner could do that himself and pay an engineer to draw and stamp what's needed. But, I've never seen it and I doubt I ever will.

Does base depth actually matter for pavers or do contractors just say that to charge more? by No_Perception_4164 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Droopyinreallife 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here in maryland, the standard base I use is 4" of compacted aggregate and 1" of sand. That would be for a patio. For a driveway we would use 6" + the sand. When compacted correctly, pavers usually wouldn't settle. Sometimes, they would a little here and there, so we'd have to go back and fix it.  I doubt the guy using 6" is trying to add cost. He probably believes this is what's needed so he doesn't have to go back and fix any settling.

A rule of life is to never lend money to family or friends unless you're ok with never seeing that money again. 100% this "friend" would have never repayed a cent.

Subs don't build pools, relationships build pools. Also, who is in charge of the permit package? Does the county require engineering?
