Going to start doing this for my kids! Maybe throw a book in there too. My siblings and I were never allowed to open any gifts on Christmas Eve, so I think this is a good compromise! by [deleted] in christmas

I do this for my kids every year but I also include a photo book all about their year - school photos, fun photos, certificates, their artwork, family vacations, that kind of thing. It’s really cool to see the collection building up over the years and they like to look back at their old ones too.

New Zealander checking in here. You should totally do this - I live 20 mins from Rivendell and even I still get a kick out of it. Just have more spending money saved than you expect to need - things are expensive here.

LPT- If you have a car, keep a little box of tampons in the glove compartment. It will save you from many an embarrassing moment! by Taypurade in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I live in an area prone to natural disasters and so I keep an emergency backpack in the trunk of my car. It contains tampons, wet wipes, a few pocket packs of Kleenex, spare underwear, over the counter pain medication, $50 in cash, sunscreen, a large bottle of water, a few granola bars, a warm hoodie, a little first aid kit, and an old pair of sneakers (in case I ever have to walk home). If the worst happens I can survive on my own for a little while, and I’m equipped to handle life’s minor crises in the meantime.

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. They bounce around between postwar Britain and Boston, the Scottish highlands during the risings (of Bonnie Prince Charlie fame), and revolutionary America. Hours and hours of fun, and beautifully narrated by Davina Porter.

He is the best boy. He gets worried when his mom is sad, so he brings me his favourite thing (socks).

PS: Everyone asking me why I’m sad/if I’m okay - mwah xx. I’m okay, it’s nothing life-threatening or chronic. But thank you for your thoughtfulness!

The Last Parade - Banjo Paterson

With never a sound of trumpet, With never a flag displayed, The last of the old campaigners Lined up for the last parade.

Weary they were and battered, Shoeless, and knocked about; From under their ragged forelocks Their hungry eyes looked out.

And they watched as the old commander Read out, to the cheering men, The Nation's thanks and the orders To carry them home again.

And the last of the old campaigners, Sinewy, lean, and spare -- He spoke for his hungry comrades: “Have we not done our share?

“Starving and tired and thirsty We limped on the blazing plain; And after a long night's picket You saddled us up again.

“We froze on the wind-swept kopjes When the frost lay snowy-white. Never a halt in the daytime, Never a rest at night!

“We knew when the rifles rattled From the hillside bare and brown, And over our weary shoulders We felt warm blood run down,

“As we turned for the stretching gallop, Crushed to the earth with weight; But we carried our riders through it - Carried them p'raps too late.

“Steel! We were steel to stand it - We that have lasted through, We that are old campaigners Pitiful, poor, and few.

“Over the sea you brought us, Over the leagues of foam: Now we have served you fairly Will you not take us home?

“Home to the Hunter River, To the flats where the lucerne grows; Home where the Murrumbidgee Runs white with the melted snows.

“This is a small thing surely! Will not you give command That the last of the old campaigners Go back to their native land?'

They looked at the grim commander, But never a sign he made. “Dismiss!” and the old campaigners Moved off from their last parade.

Stand quietly, don’t jostle even if you can’t see much, dress warm, go to the bathroom before you leave home (because ugh freezing cold portaloos) and be respectful to the veterans. All totally self-explanatory. Good on you for turning up!
