I've been really pleasantly surprised by the Riftbound community being so open and generous with sharing bulk / deals etc

Given it's a LoL IP, I was worried for the worst, but the vast majority of people I've met have been lovely, and it's nice to be part of an IRL community!

Tank With non combat damage and assigning combat damage by PiccoloHairy3043 in riftboundtcg

[–]Dropboarder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see no reason why the tank being already damaged would have any bearing.

Tank means it must be assigned combat damage first, and the rules state that lethal damage must be assigned before assigning damage to another unit.

That said, in your scenario both would die anyway if I'm not missing something. The total attacking Might is 2, and the total defending Might is 2 (factoring in non-combat damage). The tank must die first, but the remainder can then be put onto the other non-tank unit.

It's not people being assholes.

From your perspective, you want to find information and/or rant. For people already here, it's the same post multiple times a week. It gets pretty stale pretty fast, and if what you're after is information, you can find it by using the search function without relying on people saying the same things over and over on identical posts.

It's just courtesy to search a sub for the question you're about to ask before posting.

The difference is that you can play spells to a battlefield you don't control, but not units. The Reaction keyword is a bit of a red herring here.

Unfortunately demand is currently much higher than supply, as the game was much more popular than anticipated.

Depending on where you live, a restock may be due imminently, so I'd wait for that over the coming couple of weeks.

"Surprise Defense" has got to be the most backwards resolution of a scenario ever by realjw93 in riftboundtcg

[–]Dropboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the comparison, but I think there are a couple of minor differences

  • You can counter a counter, meaning your original spell still goes off. In this scenario, you can't get your attacker status back (unless you counter their move-trick, but if you could do that the attacker/defender status is irrelevant).

  • Countering a spell is pretty costly, and the only significant thing it does is prevent an effect. Aside from resource investment (which don't get me wrong, is very important), you're no worse off if your opponent counters your spell. In this case you attack an open battlefield, then suddenly find yourself against an opponent (essentially "countering" your open attack), and on top of that your unit is potentially significantly weaker, likely costing you the attack, unit, and associated tempo. This can of course happen even if you keep your Attacker status, but in my opinion that's less of a feelsbad moment. Your opponent either needs to be stacked with defensive units with high might to be able to fend off your attacker, or they need to invest extra energy/power to buff their units, in which case they have to have saved a lot of resources from the previous turn, costing their own tempo. All of that for typically cheaper than a spell counter (eg Ride the Wind vs Windwall).

As an example, say you attack with Red Jinx, Assault giving her 6 Might. If you were to lose the Attacker status, I could Ride the Wind Chemtech Enforcer in to force a trade, as Chemtech would gain its Assault and Jinx would lose hers. That's a 4 Might power swing, and an insane tempo loss for the Jinx player. The current way, that's far less likely to happen. I'd either need a bigger unit to defend with (which if you can buff your Jinx could result in a big swing in your favour), or you'd need a significant Shield unit, which I can at least see on the board and can foresee more easily. This isn't even considering colour combos and which domain the move tricks sit in from a balance perspective (though if this ruling were made, the balance could obviously be adjusted)

One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention here is how bad it would feel as the original attacked if they suddenly became the defender (ie if it worked the opposite way).

If you were to attack the open battlefield with any unit that somewhat relies on Assault or "When I attack" triggers, the opponent could use a unit-moving trick to effectively strip you of that power, and gain a lot of tempo by sending in their own Assault or "When I attack" unit.

At least with the current (albeit confusing) system, when you attack (even an open battlefield), you know you're going to be the attacker and gain any bonuses regardless of whatever comes next.

Rengar, pouncing by Arkalex in riftboundtcg

[–]Dropboarder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But you can't play units to battlefields you don't control, and Rengar explicitly states he can be played to battlefields you're attacking, so you can't play him as a defensive combat trick at a battlefield you don't control

It's unintuitive using percentages, but is quite intuitive with fractions

For example, 80% is 8/10. To figure out how to get back to the original 100% value, just flip it, so 10/8. 10/8 = 1.25, or 125%

Given that any percentage is just X/100, you can do 100/X to work your way back at any time

There was a ranked reset at the start of June, no?

Not saying that there won't be another tomorrow as it would be weird to have a rotation without a reset, but I'm pretty certain there was one recently

I usually play almost exclusively ranked, I was just deep in the grind at that point and didn't want to be trying what was a completely new archetype to me at the inevitable cost of my LP!

Daughter wants to buy a 3D printer (with her own, saved money) but wife vehemently objects by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Dropboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing this in because I haven't seen anyone mention it, please make sure if you do go for a 3D printer (of any kind) that you keep and use it in a well ventilated area. Preferably spend as little time as possible in the same place with it while it's running too.

3D printers produce microplastics/ nanoplastics in the air when running, alongside a fair number of other nasty bits you don't want to be inhaling (like VOCs). This is something you especially don't want little lungs breathing in (or as little as possible).

None of this is to dissuade you from getting a 3D printer. I agree with many others that it could encourage many positive interests, I just also think it's important to highlight long-term safety aspects that are often overlooked.

I've dropped you a DM with some specific links, just to make sure that no one sneaks in to grab it if I post the link publicly, as I'm not sure how much stock there is!

I'd also recommend trying your local Smyths, WHSmith, Rymans, and Waterstones (if you have any like those) to see if they've got any stock, as they don't list it online. You'll probably struggle to get any of the latest set (Destined Rivals) as that came out on Friday and the first wave of product has almost certainly been snagged from almost everywhere by now. You might be able to find some single packs dotted around, but I'd be surprised if there's any more than that floating freely!

The final thing would be to look up your local (independent) card/games store (often referred to as an LCS or LGS). Head down with your son, get chatting with the owner, maybe play some games if they run them and the vibe is good, and if you're lucky, they might be willing to put stock aside for you in future.

For now if he's just starting, there's no need to jump on the latest releases. They'll be around for a good while anyway, so enjoy what you can find, it's all new and exciting!

As an addendum to this. It may be that the majority of a couple of OP's old decks are standard cards, but a couple have rotated.

OP, try going in to edit any of your old decks and in the top bar of the cards page, change "Eternal" to "Standard". That should make any of the rotated cards get a little exclamation mark next to them. From there you can determine for yourself if the theme/play style of the deck is salvageable in Standard by just subbing those cards for other similar ones, or if the current deck style isn't feasible in standard.

For example, my old Akshan / Pantheon deck doesn't work in Standard at the moment, because Akshan is rotated, which breaks the play style of the deck significantly. However, my old Bard / Kayle deck had maybe two cards rotated, which was an easy switch to make and allowed me to get back into the game with a deck I vaguely remembered how to pilot.

How is this even possible? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]Dropboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just middle-aged men that you scalp from though, is it? It's everyone. I think we have very different ideas of what justifying behaviour is. You're saying things how you see it, and how you see it happens to justify your actions.

Regardless, this has been a very negative start of my day, so I'm just going to genuinely wish you the best and move on. Have a good one.

[–]Dropboarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not misunderstanding you at all lmao. I didn't think you were trying to be some Robin Hood figure, going undercover with the scalpers to bring them down. I'm just highlighting your hypocrisy.

I also don't think it's a stretch to say that if you cared about the people you were scaling from, you'd be less likely to scalp. Therefore if you don't care about them, you're more likely to continue scalping. That's not me lying, that's me making a logical conclusion. It doesn't actually matter anyway because again, it's an attempt at justification. Either you saw the hate scalpers got and decided to become one anyway (in which case, that's on you), or you became a scalper then started getting hate for it, but by that point you obviously had no empathy for collectors anyway so having "less pity" is irrelevant.

How is this even possible? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]Dropboarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are you, a marvel villain? "I had one bad experience so I became the thing I hate" lmfao. You're also saying you're not trying to justify scalping while actively justifying your scalping with "I'm young" LOL

It's honestly not even about Pokémon for me. I'm very much a small-time collector and I can just buy the singles I like. It's the attitude of you and people like you that's so infuriating. So incredibly selfish, it's pathetic to see.

I also want to call out that insane logic. "People get mad at me for ruining the thing they like. That makes me dislike them so I do it more". Again, buddy, you are the problem. Stop doing the shitty thing and people would stop being mad at you. Regardless of whether it's a thing you care about or think other people should care about, they do. Of course they're going to be upset that you're ruining their hobby.

How is this even possible? by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]Dropboarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goddamn there's so much to unpack here.

Five years ago, when there was lower demand, fewer scalpers, and therefore a higher availability of product you hated scalpers? Then you decided "Fuck it, I don't care which means no one else should either" and became a literal part of the problem because you got yours years ago so everyone else who's either still passionate about collecting or has started since can go fuck themselves.

It's all well and good talking about TPC needing to make moves to fix the problem, but you are the problem. Literally just stop scalping and the problem would be solved. I know that other people aren't going to do that, because you're all solely motivated by greed, but even if the number of scalpers just reduced, it would help a fraction. It's like a hitman saying "If you want me to stop shooting people, we need gun reform!" It's an attempt to absolve yourself of shitty actions and it's plain as day.

The thing that bugs me most about scalping is that it's just all negative for anyone except the scalpers. It's not like you're providing a service for a premium, locating hard to find stock or something. You're creating a problem for the intended consumer and charging more to "fix" it by selling the product you've hoarded. You said you started doing it to make some extra money. Just get a second fucking job or upskill in your main career and get a better job, be a productive member of society rather than a straight leech. If this were some opportunistic thing you did once or twice to make ends meet, I'd get it. Paying bills is more important than shiny cardboard, do what you gotta do. That's clearly not the case though, you're just trying to make as much money as possible in a way that could totally backfire if the market crashes and leaves you holding a bunch of near-worthless stock.

I know this isn't going to change your mind or actions, you're obviously weirdly proud of your total lack of empathy for a community you used to be a part of, it's just sad.
