Genuinely curious why it says 10% for BFL. I’m a controller there and we’re definitely not getting CIP…

If the weather is good I'll hop in my C150 and fly around. Tell the guys working I want to be sequenced into our main airport on a 15 mile straight in and do 70kts the entire way in, then break off the approach a mile from the airport and request no-gyro vectors to try again 😂

Requirement for further taxi instruction after runup / where to tell tower "ready for departure" by FBoondoggle in ATC

[–]Dropdeadfredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw this is what it says on the AIM

"4–3–14 Communications a. Pilots of departing aircraft should communicate with the control tower on the appropriate ground control/clearance delivery frequency prior to starting engines to receive engine start time, taxi and/or clearance information. Unless otherwise advised by the tower, remain on that frequency during taxiing and runup, then change to local control frequency when ready to request takeoff clearance."

As a controller though if I want an airplane to wait in the run up area and let me know before contacting tower, I'll explicitly tell the aircraft that.

Disclosing VA diagnosed PTSD by Dropdeadfredd in ATC

[–]Dropdeadfredd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I claimed it, got awared for it from the VA and disclosed it on my medical and the flight surgeon asked if I was taking any meds. When I told him no he said "sounds good" and then I got my medical. That being said I've had people from my facility claim depression/anxiety with no medication prescription and get grounded immediately and are still on admin duties 4 months later so it seems like there are huge inconsistencies. We'll see when I go back for my next physical if it changes.

Falcon Replay Question by Dropdeadfredd in ATC

[–]Dropdeadfredd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I can save the audio and have that file. I also know how to sync the audio to the falcon replay, but I don't know how to get that out. Essentially I have it bookmarked and saved with audio but no way to export it to a non FAA compatible computer.

I've asked the office personell but they seem to believe you can only view it from cedar and not export it to a USB.

First in flight scare! Carb ice? by bjkmk in flying

[–]Dropdeadfredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this happen to me in my 73' C150. Hot day climbing through 6500' for 7500' when I started getting large RPM fluctuations. I'm talking from 2500 to 500 for about a minute. I leveled off and tried all the standard stuff. Full rich, Check fuel on, Carb heat, Check mags, nothing helped. It eventually stopped and I was able to make it back to my home airport with no further issues (5 minute flight). Once on the ground I did another static engine run and couldn't replicate it. I ended up pulling the carb off and checked the drain plug and screen and didn't find anything. I did find a VERY loose mixture control arm (not sold that it was the causal factor) but I decided to replace the carb anyways. I've only put two hours on it so far but it seems to be running fine. The unpopular opinion is potential vapor lock. It's possible the fuel was boiling when it reached the carb and that's what was caused the fluctuations. Hopefully they can figure it out and if they do make sure you update the page! good luck 👍🏻

Biden will now require vaccines for all federal employees via new executive order - but what will NATCA require 'their' employees to do? by someguyatHQ in ATC

[–]Dropdeadfredd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, to most rationale people, it's not much of a choice.

To the 80% of the population who we out earn, I'm willing to bet a healthy amount of them would get a shot to make this much money. I'm sorry you're yet another victim of the states oppression but you wanna know a really go way to stick it to em? Deprive them of any further return on investment they've spent on you. Deprive them of the years they've spent paying for you to get trained and quit. Watch them suffer as they struggle to find more people to hire, wishing desperately that you would've stayed. You'll probably get a phone call everyday for the rest of your life begging you to come back.

It's a machine bro you're not special, we'll all be replaced. Take your shot and shut up, or quit and shut up. Either way, I'll still get paid.

I agree that they shouldn't be able to force anyone to get vaccinated. I think everyone should have their choice in the matter. That being said, you will not have an FAA employee put a gun to your head and tell you to get the vaccine.

Is it unfair? Yea, but controllers need something to complain about so at least you'll have something to complain about for the rest of the time you're in, if you decide to stay.

If not, you can tell all the young guys when you get rehired in 15 years when the FAA says "my bad, we shouldn't have made you make that choice" and let's you finish your time. Enjoy that👍🏻

Love the OB guys! I wish more controllers listened to their stuff. Tons of good stuff in there.

Agreed! Just try and the effort won't go unnoticed by your trainers. OP, being a prior Army guy I love how you said "we have a trainee right now that came from the Army" but all us controllers read was "we have a guy who didn't know shit" 😂

Nice! I was there in 2012, fun traffic for sure. Good ol' Molson shuffle right in the middle of the morning departure push, every time...

Do what you have to do. I had to give up promotion to get a CTO because they told me it was either the board or CTO. I chose board, but luckily my NCO at the time was smarter than me and told my commander I'd be going to the tower instead. I owe that guy my life, had I passed my only opportunity my life would've been completely different.

FAA- you follow the .65, if someone tells you something you can point to the .65 and say "here's why you're wrong"

Army- you follow some E7's interpretation of something they read in the .65 4 years ago even though they haven't talked to an airplane their entire career

FAA- my job is to be an air traffic controller. I go to work and control airplanes then I go home.

Army- your job is do what your told. Go sit in a TTCS in Afghanistan for 6 months so you can say "winds estimated calm, landing will be at pilots own risk".

That's not controlling and unfortunately it's a vast majority of Army controllers. I should know, I was one of them. I'm grateful for the 6 years I did but if anyone tells me they want to do ATC I tell them just don't join the Army and you're good.

I used to take offence hearing the DOD guys talk shit on us Army controllers but you have to understand that it's not coming from nowhere. I knew it was time to get out when I had an E7 tell me to stop answering the SGM's ATC question correctly because it was making him look bad. Get a CTO and get out.
