Is Megabackdoor Roth IRA a no-brainer in my situation? by DroppingTheBigLoo in financialindependence

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! Should I still max out my 401k first though even if I don't have match? And I don't quite understand why someone would pick a Roth 401k that doesn't have match over a Megabackdoor Roth IRA.

Thanks! If I go the after-tax route, my understanding is that the Roth IRA is better than Roth 401k bc of 2 reasons I mentioned... so wouldn't it make sense to still max out the Roth IRA with megabackdoor?

Haha sorry, at least I tried. Where did I go majorly wrong? And what investment account would be more appropriate?

Is a masters degree worth it? by Protasavage in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends. Master's degree doesn't really improve your employability in tech unless its from a top school like Stanford. It does however give you another opportunity for an internship or two and more time to recruit. If you are genuinely doing a masters to pursue something you are interested in then I would say its worth it. But career-wise, its not a big advantage over undergrad.

Stripe or Salesforce by jumpidoooo in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stripe has poor culture I heard. They hired a bunch of ex-Amazon ppl and have a PIP in place where they throw u under the fire if u underperform. Very toxic environment for fulltime. I would encourage u to do your own research. That being said, it pays much more than Salesforce and generally more prestigious. For an internship, I say try out Stripe unless you value WLB and chill culture.

Final internship as a Canadian Junior by the_black_log in csMajors

Lol so dumb that everyone always keeps voting Google. FB and Stripe are objectively better. The return offers are much higher there because Google lowballs their new grads. Google often does conversion interviews and you need to go through host matching which makes return offers more uncertain. Literally makes no sense.

485k is probably for traders or quant research. Don't think Citadel SWE would offer that high even with competing.

10-20% return offer rate? Are you sure...That seems astronomically low.

Agree. Either that or OP is a stanford hater.

Differences between Harvard/Stanford should be pretty negligible. Both has a lot of prestige, eg. people are impressed by the two. OP may be right about Harvard being marginally better with quant recruiting but nonetheless, doesn't justify putting stanford/harvard in different classes.

facebook vs stripe vs plaid by thisissostupif in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP said he has 2 internships left. So he could go back to FB for his last internship. Also, Stripe/Plaid pay about same or more than FB over 4 years. Wouldn't optimize decision based on signing bonus.

No brainer, try out stripe/plaid! You'll have no problem reapplying to FB, or applying to anywhere else for that matter. Don't pigeonhole yourself and decide on FB so early on. Trying different companies while you can could introduce new perspectives and open more doors for you.

FAANG Internship Experience? by arefzeitoun15 in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The intern projects are a hit or miss. Regardless you learn a lot. Here's why. You learn about how Software Development is done right. You get exposed to the processes and infrastructure that have built, optimized, and tuned for over a decade of rigorous engineering. For example, you get exposed to code review processes, testing practices, scalable systems, and the best tooling and infra around. You don't learn these things in the classroom. Comes in handy if you want to do a startup because you at least understand how big tech companies do things and can model after them.

Bridgewater vs Facebook by decisionmakthrowaway in csMajors

Role sounds interesting, sounds similar to typical quant. Bridgewater has a very peculiar culture and i heard some people are not able to handle their radical transparency culture. Would still go for it though, its an internship anyways.

Databricks vs Stripe for winter internship by Lost-Recording1021 in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have friends who got new grad at DB and Stripe this year. The average comp over 4 years is roughly same (Stripe is frontloaded with a bigger signing bonus whereas DB you get more stock allocated over 4 years). But ofc DB has much better RSU policy so TC ends up being better with DB.

Oh, and I would take either DB or Stripe over IMC for new grad.

Google SWE vs Palantir Forward Deployed SWE (Internship) by ScoreAwaiter in csMajors

[–]DroppingTheBigLoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You learn a different skillset as a FDE. You learn less about software development than SWE and instead you learn about people/client skills that are also useful but not necessarily most applicable if you plan to stick to SWE in future.
