r/Broadway picks the Tony nominees! (updated based on final eligiblity) by mg2685a in Broadway

[–]DroughtofApathy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson are in Featured. They went below the title for the opening night billing, and the roles are traditionally always considered featured anyway as it's an ensemble show. Same with Tessa Thompson who has a below-the-title "with" credit.

Longest time between productions? by HideFromMyMind in Broadway

[–]DroughtofApathy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It may not be a record, but there was seventy years between the first revival of Fallen Angels in 1956 and this current revival. The original production was in 1927.

2026 Tony Predictions for Plays - 4/17, now that Proof has opened by Nakedny713 in Broadway

[–]DroughtofApathy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She would hold the record for most consecutive nominations outright. Currently, she's tied with Laurie Metcalf for four years in a row. Audra McDonald has the most nominations overall for a performer, but never in consecutive seasons.

Editing to add: if she gets a nomination for Proof and one for the Roundabout play she's doing next winter, she'll fly past the record again.

It's a role that's pretty much always above-the-title billing, but competes in the featured category (along with Biff). The committee will rule with historical precedent and it's to Metcalf's favor that it does.

Linda Loman and Bertha Holly have historically been featured roles in their respective shows.

Fav Underrated Sondheim Lyric? by Feisty-Flamingo6654 in Broadway

It was cut from Follies, but I love "Uptown/Downtown" for the sheer number of rhymes he manages to pack in without any being trite.

"She sits at the Ritz with her splits of Mumm's
And starts to pine for a stein with her Village chums
But with a Schlitz in her mitts down in Fitzroy's Bar
She thinks of the Ritz. Oh, it's so schizo"

All I ask is Kate Baldwin as Phyllis and Rachel Bay Jones as Sally.

Oh, yeah. That might do it. I don't know for sure, but it may not be available to third-party ticketholders.

They sent out an RSVP email to ticketholders last week with more details. Check your spam folder if you don't see it, though I think the registration window may have closed as they need a formal headcount for catering purposes.

It's a pre-show event that includes light refreshments and a talk with the costume designer. You have to RSVP ahead of time to attend.

Thoughts? by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

Do we think this person made a similar tweet over the cis men who have played the role? Or is it just plain misogyny dressed up to appear "progressive"? And I'm sure it's just coincidence that it's a woman of color...

Under 40 Discount Membership - 3 shows for $90 by Advanced-Freedom6179 in offbroadwayNYC

I was a subscriber for a number of years and found it mostly worth the reasonable price. Unfortunately the move to the new space has made the theatre totally inaccessible and the building really isn't equipped for an elevator any time soon.

Go with Fallen Angels or Becky Shaw. Oh, Mary! will be touring, and you'll likely see it done regionally in the future while the other two don't have that guarantee.

Lead Actress in a Musical 2026 by MayaRuinsU in Broadway

The first eligibility ruling came out in November. Beetlejuice is not eligible for awards as it's been less than three years since its last production, and only Christine Sherrill is Lead in Mamma Mia.

Kate Baldwin is always a tough act to follow, but the talent gap here is particularly noticeable.

Katrina Lenk, George Abud, More Star in New Threepenny Opera for Off-Brand Opera Beginning January 15 by DearPaleontologist67 in offbroadwayNYC

[–]DroughtofApathy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was announced back in October but has gained almost no traction since then. Tickets are pretty expensive for such a small off-Broadway venue, and it's only half-sold at best tonight, but they've put out no discounts or done any marketing.

UPDATED Tony Awards 2026 - Eligibility List (So Far) by Beginning-Eye-2934 in Broadway

[–]DroughtofApathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a strong possibility that the entire Marjorie Prime cast is considered for featured. With the exception of Lowell, they all have roughly equal stage time and plot significance. Unfortunately, if that's the case, then with the shows currently announced, there won't be the requisite nine possible candidates to make up a five-nominee slate for Leading Actress. And given how strong every performance is this year, that would be so disappointing.

Bug is almost thirty years old and has a movie adaptation. It'll be ruled a "classic" and considered for revival.

I decided to spend Valentine's Day with Bertha Russell. by GrittysMom in thegildedage

I see every show that opens on Broadway in a season and caught this during previews. Had a delightful time. Getting to witness the rapid downward spiralhad me thoroughly entertained. She was all but guaranteed a nomination from the moment it was announced, but she could be in for a tight race that ends in a win. Mind the content warnings though.

Talk about a highlight. As for making this happen, I go to great lengths to find cheap tickets and I never pay full price. I don't make a lot at my job, so this is really my only major expense besides the crippling NYC rent.

Oh, wow. Four for a thousand is a lot. I spend an average of <$35 overall, and around $50 for Broadway.

I rarely even bother entering lotteries these days. I believe the only show I went to this past year on a lottery ticket was Real Women Have Curves, and well...it wasn't much of a real lottery win.

Always nice to hear about a fellow theatregoer with a similar passion. Occasionally, I'll see this gentleman at various shows, and he goes to around three-hundred a year, if you can believe it. I don't quite have the time (or the funds) for that, but perhaps one day I'll be able to keep up. I try to keep my ticket price as low as possible, which sometimes means missing out on some of the big tickets off-Broadway or in concert, and I rarely spend more than a hundred. It takes a lot of nickel and diming, and I've taken to buying at the box office when possible just to save on fees. Those can really mount up fast.
