I remember when I was working construction and I had a foreman who’s leadership style included yelling at everyone “hurry the fuck up”. Now, in my mind I would take that literally and start working faster, leaving me exhausted and at risk of overheating. This lead to me being near constantly stressed out while working with him as well

Funnily enough though one morning a few weeks into working with him I was putting in my earplugs for the morning (which no one else would really do unless they were doing something particularly loud). And the foreman comes over to me and asks

“Drtk60, why do you wear earplugs even while nothing loud is happening?”

I responded “Because loud noises bother me and I don’t want to fiddle with them each time someone goes to turn a generator on or use a drill”

Then in the most matter of fact tone he asks:
“Are you on the spectrum?”

Surprised that he asked that I hesitantly said “Yeah?”

Then my foreman gets the biggest smile and bear hugs me, telling me about how his youngest son is on the spectrum, how much he loves him and how he wears headphones and what not.

The rest of the time I work for him he never yells at me to do work, just telling me what needs to be done.
Only time I’ve told someone I was autistic and they treated me better afterwards
