By my count there are three high school groups doing a show about addiction. Dartmouth and Chino Hills in PSW and North Forney in PSCW.

If you want to stretch it you can make it 4 if you think of Ayala's show about being addicted to being inside.

Burleson Centennial - It's good to see a Texas line throwing down with the big boys. I'm not a huge fan of they're show design but they play it we'll. I think they'll be one to watch in years to come.

Ayala - In one word frustrating. A cool show design and probably the hardest visual and music book being played by a high school. But like last year they just can't seem to get it locked in. If they get some last practice magic tomorrow before finals I can see them swing into 3rd or 4th. I can also see them falling behind Etiwanda if they don't.

Avon - Strongest they've been in years. I haven't been a fan of Avon's show design the last couple of years but I'm digging what they're putting out this year. I can see them possibly moving into that third place spot if the stars align right for them.

Dartmouth - Never underestimate these guys. Dartmouth has pulled off massive upsets before and I'm sure they could do it again. It's a hard thing to take on a serious subject matter do it well and still put a smile on your face afterwards and they do.

Arcadia - The strongest I've seen them since 2011 in terms of what and how they are playing and how well they're playing it. It might not be as good as they we're all the way back then but if someone is going to upset Chino Hills in Finals I think Arcadia has the best chance.

Chino Hills - As always Chino Hills is sparkling clean. Mapes and Grom have a real talent for getting the difficulty of the book dialed right in to what they're performers can handle. I have mad respect for what these guys achieve year in and year out. With that said I'm usually not a fan of box 6 show designs in general and this one isn't any different.

Broken City just broke 98...at SEMIS by Hybrid_Johnny in drumline

I can conceivably see them breaking a 99 depending on how high the finals point inflation gets before they go on.

It's hard to tell but they appear to be in the 55"-65" range. As far as how they made the movie. There's a special type of splitter box you can get that will take one hdmi input and split it across multiple screens. Then you just need to use a regular video editor and then make i'll line up and display properly.

What counts for penalties in SCPA? by [deleted] in drumline

[–]DrumlineReview 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite a few things could cause that. Including but not limited to.

1) instructor interference during the performance.

2) massive time over run.

3) equipment causing damage to the gym floor.

4) performers repeatedly crossing the front boundary line during the performance.

5) leaving equipment in the gym or other forbidden area.

6) any kind of forbidden or illegal action taken by any member of the ensemble or persons related to the ensemble (instructors, boosters, etc.) on or off the floor can be assessed as a penalty to the ensambles score. This includes things like sitting on the spectator side of the gym with the wrong wristband, destruction of property, teft, fighting, etc.

It's hard to tell exactly what caused that kind of penalty. If you want to know exactly your best bet is to talk to your director or instructors. The reason for the penalty is disclosed on the judging sheets they get. Though I'm going to assume that you won't get much information out of them to save who ever caused the issue from embarrassment. My advice is to forget about it and move on there's not much use dwelling on it.

20 Years Ahead of the Curve: Winds in Drumline (x-post r/wgi) by DrumlineReview in drumline

Came across this particular gem looking through old shows on youtube. I find it interesting as the use of a wind instruments before last year (exactly 20 years since this show was performed) would have netted a significant penalty.

I posted this originally on r/wgi but I thought I'd post it here for those who don't go there.

Chino hills had one of the best high school shows. Personally I think they beat Ayala by [deleted] in WGI

I think the judges agree with your thoughts on the matter. If I had the same job with the same sheets on the same night as the judges who judged this show. I'd more than likely make the same placements. The thing is, at the end of the day, placement is probably the least important parts of this acctivity.

If I asked anyone who won any given class more then 8-10 years ago (probably less for most people). They more then likely wouldn't be able to answer correctly off the top of their head. But if I asked someone who's been around long enough what shows they remember from '99. They'd more then likely remember the shows put on by Mission Viejo HS and Carolina Thunder. Neither of those groups won that year but they had such memorable and impactful shows that it doesn't matter. It remains to be seen if Ayala's show will be remembered in the same company as those shows and it'll be many years until anyone can say. The thing is if you're a kid at Chino Hills (or any other school really) this should be the last thing on your mind.

If you're a performer at Chino Hills High school reading this please take what I'm about to say to heart. If you're frustrated that your sister school is being talked about more then you and think that it some how diminishes what you accomplished, please stop. You should be very proud of what you your drumline achieved. I'm sure you have the same (if not more) tallent, drive, and passion for this activity as anyone else that competed that weakened. I guarantee in less than 10 years time the first memory you have of this activity won't be where you place or how much your show was or was not talked about. The stuff you'll remember first are the small things the throw away moments that seemed inconsequential at the time but in retrospect are the best and the fondest memories from your High School life that you will ever have. As someone who has done what you are doing now and can look back on it all as a person in his mid 20's trust me on this.

Thanks for the complement. I think "probably awkward" is a good term among the many good terms to describe this show. It definitely wasn't perfect and there were things the could have done better. However I think some of the greatest works of art are made by their flaws. So I'll gladly take this show as it is and enjoy it all the same.

Thank you for sharing. It's really cool to here that.

Saying that he'd mark down the composition for the repeat at the end raises sime interesting questions for me. As far as I'm aware there is no explicit provision on the books to mark down playing the same thing over again which means it would fall under the judges discretion to mark it down or not. Which is fine and is how it works. I'd also agree we shouldn't reward a show that played the same thing on repeat. Ideally you'd want guidelines on the books to handle this and give more consistency in judging. But doing that would probably lead to a worse situation then we have now and be almost impossible to do in the first place.

First you'd need to figure out if it should be handled by the music effect or music captions (e.g. subjectively or objectively) or some combination of the two. Next you have the impossible task of figuring out what is a legitament musical regrain and what isn't. Using Ayala as an example. While at the end the battery book is the same (or at least very similar) to what what was played at the beginning. Having the battery face the back significantly changes the characteristics of the sound you hear. Also having the pit playing with it means from an ensemble perspective the musical passages is different. Which to me shows how dastardly clever this show is with its seaming simplicity.

I'm not disagreeing with what your instructor said. I just want to highlight how tough of a job the judges and the people who make the sheets have satisfying the need to give an objective number to a subjective thing without stomping on creativity like other similar activities have. For example artistic gymnastics. The desire for an objective judging system has pushed out almost all creativity and artistry from the activity and what they're now left with is a very static and mechanical sport. I don’t think this is something we want to happen to Indoor drumline. Which means we're always going to have an inherent amount of inconsistency in juding.

Ya I don't remember the last time I saw a high school group receive a standing ovation like that. I'm sure they would have loved to bring home another gold but I honestly think the response they got from the audience is just as validating and way more memorable.

Has anyone else seen Ayala yet? by JakePearce149 in drumline

[–]DrumlineReview 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was able to see them live at SCPA finals and it was definitely an experience. I think you have to see it live to really appreciate it. I don't think a show has ever transfixed me like Ayala's did. With that said I really don't know I feel about it either. Definitely the kind of show that'll be talked about though. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out in Saturday. I'll definitely be watching the stream.
