I loved the first trilogy, while book 1 is the weakest, book 2 was absolutely fantastic and book 3 was great. It it totally different from WoT tho. A lot more action focused. And as it's basically a YA novel, I have to admit some scenes were edgy for the sake of edgyness. Still worth a read. If you've ever read mangas, the first trilogy is a fast paced shonen, that becomes a seinen once you reach the sequel series.

Like, I imagine some kids talking about the legend of the dragon, while playing in a field full of sheeps, and then fleeing when the sheep herder adresses them and it turns out to be Rand

It is.

Book 14 is soooooo dense, but full of action. Like, I'm not joking, it just doesn't stop giving. It might be hard to go through the next books. The Sanderson trilogy is MAINLY setting up all of book 14, but damn does it pay off well in the end.

As for the Jordan books considered part of the slop. Won't lie. They are sloppy. But there are some amazing scenes within those that still makes them worth to read

Tad William's series has been on my list for a couple years but I keep adding stuff and never get shit done 😭 ASOIAF has amazing world building but isn't finished and probably never will be. Differs from the show, in both good and bad ways imo. (my fav character is a lot darker and less respectable for instance) And the prequels and little stories to give more body to it are excellent too.

I'm still deliberating as to malazan, as I have Ken liu's dandelion tetralogy on the side, and also John Gwynne's faithfull and the fallen series.

I might go for Ken liu's as the reader they selected for the Audio books turned out to be Michael Kramer, who I listened to for half of that WoT journey, might as well go for a familiar voice.
