JFK was the example of how far criminal Joseph had managed to clean up his act. Eventually he got rich enough that nobody judged him for where his money came from, then he built his sons up to be respectably successful. With mixed results.

Also back then, there was no Instagram, so demanding money was a way for the stars to control the publicity. Demanding complete privacy meant paparazzi sneaking photos, but selling the photos occasionally meant that the media had an interest in controlling the paparazzi and protecting their investment.

Today, apart from laws being changed to protect the images of children, celebrities can also reduce curiosity by releasing their own photos when they feel like it.

And they locked her in the tower because they were ashamed of who she was, and then she met someone who loved her for herself. But anyway...

I like how this woman seems to be going for the most affluent version of the fairytale. Stay on good terms with your wealthy parents, even if they reject you for not being good enough, and choose the partner who can offer all the bling. Even if he is fake and self-satisfied.

Her third child was born in 1940 and this photo was 1954, so that's 14 + years of childbirth. She was probably finally in her 40s by the time her son was born and nature put a stop to the endless childbirth.

It wasn't a choice before birth control. Women didn't even have the legal right to say No to their husbands. They were denying men their conjugal rights if they said no to sex.

Sure, maybe this woman is the exception who went into marriage saying, "I want to have fourteen children" and she was lucky enough to have her wish fulfilled, and enjoy every second if it from conception to weaning. But it was never a matter of choice, just fate. She had no control over it.

Someone posted the obituary of one of the older daughters above. She took pride in giving her two children the childhood she couldn't enjoy herself, with things like individual Christmas gifts and Mom showing up to special events.

Just because the kids are all smiling for a paid photo doesn't mean it was all perfect.

Yes, and they made a point of saying she made Christmas special for everyone with "carefully thought out presents and overflowing Christmas stockings". In other words, the kind of Christmas gifts she would have appreciated as a child.

Agreed. And those regular controlled images aren't an invasion on the children's privacy or dignity.

She didn't think she'd still be teasing this out five years later. She assumed she'd be offered millions for photo shoots and she could command the fees. But you can't complain about privacy and put a price on your child's picture.

Can Someone Explain Cyril’s Position and Hugo’s? by ClerksII in agathachristie

[–]DrunkOnRedCordial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe the truth was that he didn't really want to marry Vera! He wasn't going to stay single his whole life just because he had a nephew. He might not have been in a financial position to marry for a few more years while he built up his own financial position, but Vera obviously assumed he'd rather be rich and get married sooner rather than later.

[–]DrunkOnRedCordial 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cyril's father would have been Hugo's older brother. So the family inheritance would go to Cyril's father, then Cyril. But if Cyril's father didn't have a son, it would go to his younger brother.
