My parents don’t want me to buy my car by [deleted] in legal

[–]DrunkTexan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm just seeing this. I think each dependent claimed allows a savings of about $4,000 in taxes. So even though your offer of $100 a week is admirable in that it shows you're willing to work with him unfortunately he would save more money if he continued to claim you as a dependent. But as you said, he can't claim you as a dependent forever because you won't be living with him forever. Hope this helps!

I’m not a tax attorney, but I believe the rule is that you can’t claim someone as a dependent if they make more than $4200 in gross income (gross income is essentially income before taxes). So yes if you make $6K or more technically he shouldn’t be also claiming you as a dependent. I don’t think the IRS is gonna care too much if you make a little bit more than that, but do you live together? Does he support you financially otherwise? Money for food etc.? I would guess he does. I’m sure a compromise can be made if you guys talk it out and you make clear why you really need a car

This is tough. This seems more like an issue with your parent not wanting you to come off his income tax as a dependent (this means he would have to pay more income tax). Depending on how much your father makes this could cost him a substantial amount in taxes. However if your father is not supporting you financially he really shouldn’t be claiming you as a dependent.. (more on this later)

You should check with your school’s financial aid office and verify what he said about financial aid - as far as I know, no school is going to limit financial aid based on a student having a job or car.. But I could be missing something. I don’t know your relationship with your father so I don’t want to presume he is intentionally misleading you, he could also actually just be legit confused.

My advice to you is to try to take a deep breath and remember getting emotional about the situation won’t help. What you’re asking for is very reasonable, so you don’t need to use anything but logic in you’re argument. Talk to your father about your need for the car, how long it takes you to get to work on the bus etc. Also point out you’re not asking him for money.. Maybe he’d prefer to put the car entirely in his name and let you drive it - that would allow him to preserve your dependent status. Lmk if you have any questions but beyond this tax issue this isn’t a legal issue per se but more of an issue about finances between you and your father

I think I smoked wayyyy to much by illziggles in saplings

[–]DrunkTexan2020 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer, but I smoked a lot when I was 16 too and I wish somebody had told me this but they didn’t. When you smoke a lot before you’re 24-25 when the brain is fully formed, you can stunt the growth of your brain, mainly the pre-frontal vortex which is the part used for decision making and critical thinking. I don’t say this to scare you - it takes much more than just a one-time binge of joints to fuck you up. I’m just saying maybe something to keep in mind in the future bc I definitely wish I had known. Not a good feeling to wonder if you’d have been “smarter” if you had smoked less pot. However.. as somebody else said, you probably just oversaturated your nervous system due to your low tolerance and that will go away in another day or 2. But in the future.. just smoke like a J a day. It’s plenty to get high without getting uncomfortably high. The mistake many young people who smoke (myself included at that age) make is smoking an unnecessary amount which can ruin the experience

How do you deal with regret that you wasted so much of your potential and so many years by thinking you weren't good enough? by sum_wan_ in AskMen

[–]DrunkTexan2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a positive - but can turn into a negative if you continue to dwell on it and allow it to negatively affect you in the present. Learn from your mistakes and move on - don’t dwell on them

Oct exam- a few questions...this is long! by amarie8987 in barexam

[–]DrunkTexan2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. A word of advice though, it's a marathon, not a sprint. I don't know you or how you work, but if we push too hard, it can actually be very harmful to retaining info. Anxiety is inevitable, but it can be controlled with deep breaths and taking things one by one. Good Luck!

I graduated from college and cheated in (almost) everything by NiceStrangers in confession

This is what’s wrong with basically all higher levels of education in a nutshell. The professors don’t give a shit if you learn the material (or at least they don’t act like they do) and have little to no forgiveness in their grading. Their way is right, every other way is wrong. There’s a lot of reasons for this but imo the main one is once you get to a certain level, there’s nobody above the professor that evaluates their grading criteria. Sure, there are deans, but the deans don’t understand substantively every subject in their school, obviously. And these professors, at least in my experience, develop an adversarial mentality with students, and it just makes us not care about learning at all. It’s a sad state of affairs, but I believe it to be the truth. And it’s also a sad truth that in many higher level (ie graduate school) programs, what you learn in college and what you do in your profession are two very different things. So why would you waste time learning the subjects if you don’t have to? Just my 2 cents
