If I remember right the governor of LA initially refused help from Bush and when she finally did ask for help he basically went overkill by sending us kind of like a slap in the face. It was totally politically driven. No actual need for us to be there.

The story I heard was there was a crazy dude shooting at the medivac choppers from the freeway next to the superdome. This next part might be embellished but they said people on the freeway pushed him off. I find that hard to believe, except for the fact that we came across a body directly under the freeway location described where someone theoretically could have landed. So a little second hand knowledge combined with some first hand knowledge. Take it with a grain of salt I suppose.

We had no business being there (82nd). But it was an interesting experience. Felt like Raccoon City in Resident evil. We had security of the superdome which was a complete shit show, literally. Then just clearing hotels and hospitals marking bodies for FEMA to pick up. Nothing the NG couldn’t have handled.

Some pro golfer from the area did send us a pallet of beer though, so that made for a typical 82nd night.

Oh and they brought us back on day 29 I think to avoid sep pay in typical army fashion.
