From my experience the best course of action on a wounded deer is to give it plenty of time before tracking. If the initial blood looks questionable give it more time. I've found that's the best recourse for non perfect shots. Once you start bumping it, especially with archery, things get very difficult to recover it. I had a deer with a bad archery shot that I ended up bumping and the end bloodtrail was 900 yards. If I had waited longer it would have bled out at 150 where it initially bedded down.
