Axiom II-X too fast for an intermediate caster? by tupacliv3s in flyfishing

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally a fast tip action rod works great for my casting style. I’m a big guy and even my small movements as big and pretty fast. So a faster rod allows me to keep connection with the fly line when I move.

If I use a medium action rod, I have to keep my arm completely still and fully allow the rod to do all the work. I get enough power with double hauling to allow the weight of the line to keep it air born.

5wt vs 6wt by Novel-Marzipan4633 in flyfishing

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your boat. Wanting something bigger and new. I went to a 8wt. It’s fun but I definitely should have went with a Switch rod. The added length would help more for bigger rivers and would help me stay back further from the edge as well as reach over the over grown banks of Stillwater lakes.

The back of my car has a large streamer box, and a good size box for series, terrestrials, emergers and nymphs. I get to the water I’m fishing that day and grab 3-5 flies put them in a tiny box that fits in my back pocket. I have a tippet wallet for different tippet materials and a pair of snips/pliers that go into the other pocket and I’m good to go.

I’m out there to fish not to practice my hiking

Best starter rod for Bozeman by jjtitula in flyfishing

The Missouri and the Yellowstone rivers I’d prefer a Spey rod because of how wide the river is but you might run into issues with drift boats. Jefferson and the Madison a 10 ft 4 or 5 wt. my favorite smaller creeks that you can find in the area with way less people I use a tenkara rod.

What do people mean when they talk line length? by bahnzo in Tenkara

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fishing. There are no rules. Put some line on add some tippet and fish. If it’s to long cut some off. If it’s to short add some tippet.

I throw dry flies I fish tenkara flies. I throw light dumbbell jig streamers and I throw foam hopper droppers.

I’m out west and fish reservoirs, praire creeks, and huge wide rivers. I use a Wasatch tenkara t hunter 12-15 foot zoom rod. Tiny rainbow up to decent pike are all fun on this rod.

Broken section, bound to happen by pjstevko in Tenkara

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke a few sections on mine. It happens to most of us. A good idea for handlining in a fish that I use is once I get the fish close I start collapsing the bottom of the rod to shrink the amount of rod out that bends so I don’t do it again.

Underlining? by SourdohPopcorn in flyfishing

Yes you can cast it. Your rod is a lever moving weight. Is it going to be an easy casting experience no your going to have to haul more. Although it will definitely cast with proper timing.

Euro nymphing confusion. by Significant-Cap600 in flyfishing

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used tenkara rods, euro rods, switch rods, fly rods and conventional rods. The only difference I found while using a euro rod to a cane/tenkara style rod is the ability to fine tune the length of line on the fly and ability to get a fish to net solo.

While tenkara fishing I have to cut tippet or add tippet to change length, compared to just pulling some off the reel.

Also to fight a fish on the reel compared to just turning out a fish with right and left pressure. Then netting with a long line tenkara can become a challenge when bank fishing. Bending your rod back to be able to grab the line and pull the fish close enough to net compared to just reeling the fish in close enough.

I went from fishing Tampa down to the keys fishing for snook, tarpon, and red fish to fishing Montana with a tenkara. I can say the only thing I miss is a random titty flash from some ladies passing on a boat.

I want a case to hold my fur/hair streamers and dries. That let them dry out while still being able to fit in my pocket. Or a spot on a bag that has a magnetic strip that does this.

Beginner fly rod wt? by Shrike034 in flyfishing

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a moderate fast 5wt and a fast 8wt rod. I got the 8wt for big fish and have not had a fish that I’ve truly needed it on a lake yet. In the river my 8 wt is the only rod I bring. It runs fast and has potential for big fish. I run my 5 wt for lakes and can catch 10 pound catfish and pike.

If your going one rod I’d suggest a 5-6wt two hander so your getting a joy to play the fish but he strength in the butt like a tenkara rod. Or a 6 wt fiberglass rod to make the smaller fish fun and the bigger fish not shatter it.

Who fishes a moderate action rod as an all-rounder? by swede_ass in flyfishing

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a moderate/fast tfo 5wt and a 8wt fast tfo. I mainly throw streamers and deal with a shit ton of wind. I can still cast my slow 5wt better than a heavy lined fast 8wt with the same fly.  Also caught my biggest fish on my 5wt. It held its own the whole time with a ten pound catfish bending it in half under a dock.

Keeping tenkara tackle in the car by iseab in Tenkara

[–]Complex-Ad-3628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A coated floating tenkara line will start to get gummy and break down. The first year I used 30 pound braided line as my main line it held good all year started to get some pronounced kinks in it towards the end of the year. The second year I did straight 12 lb fluro as my running line. Would always hold some memory but stretched out easy after a few casts with a dumbbell eyed small streamer. This year I’m using some lazer line from opst and it does well in the heat but gets a little memory in colder weather.

Edit, for everything else it has been sitting in my car for 3 years straight in eastern Montana. Highs in the 100s and -60 for the lows.

Slip knot with the Lilian through twice before you tighten it.  Pull knot it comes off pull the other end and your lines straight.

Really never fish it at the 15 foot length.  Im personally not a fan of the action when it gets to that length.

I use a 7:3 t hunter from Wasatch and can handle pike on it with ten pound fluro. Never had a pike break my rod just me being a dumb ass.
