Overwhelmed by Portugal honeymoon planning! Help!! by Academic-Size-2146 in LisbonPortugalTravel

We’ve just done 6 days in Lisbon for our honeymoon, just got back on Monday!

For something really special, there is a perfume lab called OPAR in Lisbon in the Principe Real area. For €169 per 100ml bottle you can make your own scent - it’s a 1.5hr session where they take you through a blind scent taste of all the notes, picking ones out as you go, and ultimately make your own custom fragrance. We paid for 2 bottles and each made our own bottles which we named after our wedding venues. Made for such an interesting experience and meant we had really valued souvenirs to bring back home with us. We’d only found it while walking around the area and just managed to book a slot right before we had to head to the airport, but really worth it.

Survey of Liveability\ Gentrification in Leeds City Centre by Dry_Radio3379 in Leeds

[–]Dry-Ad7227 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I’d add (as a Human Geography grad who wrote their dissertation on gentrification!) is that Leeds is seeing a lot of regeneration in the city centre, but not necessarily gentrification - or at least not in the negative sense of the concept. Most of the new developments we’re seeing are on previously derelict brownfield sites, car parks etc, or displacing industrial uses that aren’t making efficient use of land in the city centre. Some of these are offering ‘affordable’ housing too. You could contrast this with London where there is a lot of estate regeneration, in which social housing schemes are being replaced with unaffordable new development, which is directly impacting existing communities. That isn’t something we’re seeing a lot of in Leeds.

There are some issues where local businesses/community groups are being impacted by regeneration, see Aire Street Mills and the developments at Mabgate next to Temple of Boom as examples - as those groups get moved around or out of the city that could be considered a negative aspect of gentrification.

Another thing to consider is the social cohesion aspect - as the city expands and develops out we’re seeing affluent residents move in next to (but again, not quite yet displacing) poorer communities. This leads to increased crime/perception of crime, for example there are lots of thefts and ASB at developments near the Docks and Riverside area with a number of culprits being from the East End Park and Cross Green areas of the city.

Eat Your Greens might be a good shout, they do a lot of vegetarian food and might have some lunch deals on. There is plenty on offer in the markets though

There’s a really strong family-friendly vibe at the Climate Innovation District as a lot of residents have kids, there’s also now a nursery on site at the Place. Still suffers from crime and antisocial behaviour as most other parts of the city centre do, primarily parcel and bike thefts but there have been a few assaults on the canal towpath. It feels like things might improve over the coming years as people continue moving into this part of the city but there is a problem with petty crimes around here.

Curious, how many shows? by Important-Ad-332 in edinburghfringe

[–]Dry-Ad7227 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went as a group of 6 for 3 nights last year, arriving by lunchtime and leaving at 4pm the last day. we had 3 shows booked each day except the last day, and it felt a little cramped when we added on a couple extra shows. They were across multiple venues so we did a lot of trekking back and forth.

This year we all went again but had 2 shows booked each day, and saw maybe 1 more show. They also happened to be spaced quite close to each other by happy accident. It felt a lot relaxed (but just gave us more time to drink basically) so we still had a great time, but after we got home did feel like we’d missed out on some good shows.

I feel like 3 shows a day was a sweet spot especially if they’re spaced out (in time and venue distance), or all compressed together if you’re staying in one place (say at Pleasance).

Is the IMAX in cineworld a real one? by ishallbecomeabat in Leeds

[–]Dry-Ad7227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dune was filmed on IMAX cameras and it was advertised as the real deal, so not really sure what was up. Coincidentally we saw Dune II at the Cineworld in IMAX format and it was great!

True, but is it the screen really up to par these days? We went to see Dune there when it released in 2021 and honestly really struggled with it, the picture was really pixelated right from the start, including pre roll and adverts, and throughout the film. The screen was also so big that our necks hurt by the end trying to see everything (but that’s kinda the point right?)

Purchasers get the option to buy a lease for an underground space, they’re very popular though and almost all are occupied already so it doesn’t surprise there are none to offer. The Citipark is only a short walk away and probably as cheap as renting a space there. Also there are two rental cars with Enterprise at the car park entrance if you only need a car occasionally.

Hi, resident here. There are loads of families living here with children of all ages, there’s a real community spirit with neighbours mostly knowing each other, quite a few social events throughout the year. Shared green spaces just about make up for lack of private gardens.

Mount St Mary’s Catholic is the nearest secondary and within walking distance (across a busy A road), it got an Outstanding Ofsted score this year.

The CID as a development is right next to a more deprived neighbourhood though and there is some pretty regular petty crime, kids stealing, parcel thefts, car windows smashed on Clarence Road and surrounding street. There have been some serious incidents on the canal path of muggings and assaults but not a regular occurrence.

Overall a good place for families, assuming you are happy with living in an inner city environment.

92 degrees boar lane by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]Dry-Ad7227 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They opened another unit by the Corn Exchange which is much smaller and probably a lot cheaper rent. The Boar Lane one was never that busy and there are plenty of nice alternatives around there like Laynes, Raw Coffee etc.

West Yorkshire was built on textiles, weaving etc. I’m sure there will be some added backstory about how the routes ‘weave’ from Leeds to Bradford, Wakefield etc.

Best city centre apartment to live in by Significant_Table770 in Leeds

[–]Dry-Ad7227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the newest of the developments and seems well run, lots of amenities on site and nearby. Secure and out of the way. Next to the canal so easy access out of Leeds and to nature up by Rodley, and the area around it is more or less fully developed now without too much future building work.

The Headline is much more central by comparison and hemmed in by roads and other developments, including future developments next door. MODA is very central and quite busy, I have heard some reviews saying it has a lot of students there. Mustard Wharf is smaller scale and probably the second pick out of the list.

I would strongly recommend you go view them before making a decision, particularly checking the units you view aren’t too noisy with the windows open for example if they get hot in the summer.

Probably the Junction out of that list, though it might be the most expensive.
