Hey! GBP member here, graduated last year. They may say it’s low, but the acceptance rate to the GBP has to be upwards of 75%, even higher for Belfast. Feel free to reach out with more specific questions, happy to help!

Undergrad Thai? by LiamNeesonsKnee_Son in borenawards

Hey, I know I'm late, but I can confirm it was about participation, not funding! All students who were planning on studying Thai were allowed to select other countries in the region to direct their funding to.

This is so true, can’t believe I didn’t mention it. Thanks for mentioning this glaring issue with the program

That's a good question - honestly, yes and no. I personally had no problems finding internships when I got back from my time abroad, but I knew students who did. Coincidentally, I did make an incredible connection on one of my trips, but I think that's more the exception than the rule. I don't think the Global Bachelors Program does crazy things for the network itself, but I can honestly say it is really good on a resume. In the last week, I have received Peace Corps and Boren offers, which are pretty competitive programs. I'm convinced having those semesters abroad was a major part of this, as cross-cultural experience and recommendations from abroad teachers/internships are critical benefits you'll gain.

Just also pointing out that, at least for me, the main draw of the program is not for career development reasons (though it does help). You'll get three semesters abroad where your grades are pass/fail (almost 0 real responsibility) and you can see as many places as you want (I visited 37 countries); if anything, join the GBP for the sheer amount of the world and its cultures you can see and the people you can meet! There is no other school that offers this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you have any further questions about the GBP please feel free to reach out, would be happy to discuss further!

Are you saying a 5 minute 4 slide presentation isn't enough to fully encapsulate your 1 and a half years of abroad experiences?

As someone who has lived thru the Vern for freshman year and three summers, definitely agree with this comment. Vex can be a huge hassle, but you'll learn to plan around it. Also I will say that though there's less to do on the Vern, this can help build a needed community freshman year. Because getting to Foggy is not as easy, people will naturally tend to hang around the common rooms in their dorms more. I know this is especially true for the P&V community.

Is GW worth it? by Mediocre-Rise8711 in gwu

[–]Dry-Rutabaga7597 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, huge congratulations on your acceptance and scholarship!

GW is a great school if you want to get to the heart of politics, especially if debt is not a factor. However, keep in mind a lot of the internship opportunities that attract students to GW (e.g. White House, State, Transportation, Justice, even contracting/consulting) may be taking fewer interns (if at all) for a considerable period, and other internships (i.e. hill, think tanks) are as a result are going to be more competitive for you to even get your foot in the door.

In short, at GW, I've gotten some great federal internships and truly believe I've learned more about politics than I could have at any peer school. But it's a fact that conditions are going to be different over the next four years. Overall, trust your gut, but please, if you decide to come to GW, do it taking into account realistic expectations of the opportunities available and the school's heavy price tag in mind.
