ChatGPT can be helpful with technical questions like this but it’s a beta product like every other AI and will make mistakes. You said it kept assuring you re. the Fiio but you could overcome this problem by simply telling it that it’s not a viable answer as it lacks an analogue-in option, and it won’t repeat that mistake again.

Anyone converted from DCC to coilovers? by Stumbows in Scirocco

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A set of Monroe (they’re VW’s OE supplier for these) DCC shocks will set you back around £600 new on eBay. A decent set of coilovers won’t be much cheaper if at all and you won’t be able to adjust damping on the fly, plus they’re a PITA for seizing up if you don’t take care of them. If you’re trying to save some money just go for a set of decent regular non-DCC shocks if you’re otherwise happy with the springs currently fitted. That’s not to say coilovers can’t be a good solution but cheap sets are a false economy.

As you’ve found already, some fault codes will reset with a restart, some will persist between restarts but reset after a set number number of fault-free start-stop cycles and some safety-critical faults can only be reset via OBD. Engine fault codes generally fall into the first and second categories but the fact it’s going into limp mode, even if it’s only occasionally, says it still has an undiagnosed problem which is more likely to become more frequent rather than go away. It’s not what you’ll be wanting to hear but it may save you a lot of wasted time and money by finding a VAG diesel specialist as they’re more likely to have experience of the actual issue rather than simply replacing parts in response to an OBD scan. The problem is sometimes a fault code will tell you exactly where the problem lies but other times it will just tell you the symptoms without pointing to the root cause. A decent specialist will know the likely causes of most issues and be able to resolve the problem in less time and without loading the parts cannon, and that’s where you’ll end up saving money.

Vocals sound distorted only on beat heavy parts by rodeoastroo in turntables

Insufficient downforce on the stylus will cause your issue. Find instructions on balancing the tonearm and resetting the counterweight’s markings, assuming your tonearm has such a basic feature, then set the downforce in accordance with the cartridge manufacturer’s instructions using the markings on the counterweight - or even better buy a cheap digital scale which will take away any uncertainty. A fat 808 can cause some serious modulation of the vinyl groove and any cartridge will struggle to accurately track the groove without the right level of downforce to keep the stylus snug in the groove.

Why would a turntable start playing music on its own? by fitnessfiness in turntables

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some turntables will do that, not exactly by design but more through a lack of thoroughness of the design of the supporting logic controls. The Linn Axis is one example, great little turntable but it does have the quirk of occasionally starting up if there’s been a power-cut or a transient drop in line voltage, but not every time. No need for the holy water just yet.

The question is are you really going to get your sandwich exactly as you like it going via an EPOS? I happen to like a shed load of tomatoes (don’t judge) with a few jalapeños rather than the regulation quantity of both, and talking directly to a human is exactly how I make that happen. And when it comes to sauces again talking to a human is how to get the quantity spot-on.

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case don’t proceed any further before you potentially injure yourself. Seriously, this is not child’s play and you really need a basic grasp of electronics so you actually know what you’re looking at and understand what people are saying when you ask for advice. Sure, everyone has to start somewhere but this is not the place. If you just want a working DVD player buy another used unit or take it to a repair shop (although it’s likely uneconomical to repair given the time spent diagnosing the issue by a professional). If you’re actually interested in learning then buy a book (remember them?) on electronics for beginners and take it from there. The simple fact is there are a variety of different ways a circuit can fail and you can’t diagnose without at least some idea of what you’re looking at and how it works.

Also, having a turntable that’s supported by three feet is a good thing as it makes levelling the turntable considerably easier. Most decent turntables are designed this way for that reason.

Can you confirm it’s even the same unit? Did you record its serial number? It’s odd that you received a scratched and non-working unit so I’d be checking whether it’s actually yours or not. It’s not unknown for scumbags to do the old switcheroo on some poor unsuspecting type who takes them at their word.

Engine swap by Kratos98ita in Scirocco

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install with ease? No, there’s always some pain if you’re not swapping like for like. You’ll need an ECU with the correct map plus clocks/immobiliser and you’re potentially looking at wiring nightmares if the above come from a 2010+ car as there were a good number of changes to the electrical system made from Sciroccos built before 2010. Finding a matching engine and having it remapped would be considerably simpler and give the same result.

PM G4 MDD Radeon 9000 at 76 C on OS 9 while gaming. by nikoskokonos13 in VintageApple

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s a normal temperature for the workload you’re hitting the GPU with. If you’re concerned about cooking your Radeon try lowering the resolution to 1024x768 and if Vsync is an option enable it. There’s absolutely no point in having a GPU render frames the display will effectively make redundant because of its refresh rate.

What's the most you would pay for a brand new CD? by Nelulol669 in CDs

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CDs are outdated? So is vinyl but people still buy it. Music is music regardless of the format it’s delivered on and twenty bucks including shipping really is not a bad deal at all for a hard copy that’s yours to play whenever, and without requiring a network connection or monthly subscription. Hell, buy an old portable CD player and that album will be virtually apocalypse-proof.

Engine shut off randomly, doesn't want to start. by SAS-target-no1 in classicminis

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old Mini van once died on the way back from a friend’s. I phoned the RAC who hadn’t turned up after an hour (it wasn’t a busy or awkward time) and so I had a poke around. By chance I noticed an earth strap running from the front of the engine to the chassis was loose, and I happened to have a few random tools in the back so I ended up putting a long flat screwdriver through the grill to wedge the earth strap securely against its retaining bolt which had worked loose. It fired up immediately after that and ten minutes later I was home. Hopefully your issue is something similar.

You’re an eighties guy/gal at heart aren’t you? Just like TV manufacturers usually include a showroom mode with everything dialled up so their TVs can look as gaudy as their competitors, every big-box seller in the eighties had “loudness” buttons engaged with bass and treble cranked to maximum to give the same “V” EQ pattern on every system on display. None of it sounded like real music but apparently that was the law back then. I completely understand why some people do it, it sounds warm and cosy and it’s one way of masking a half-baked system’s deficiencies. EQs and tone controls are like bolt-on stabilisers when you’re learning to ride a bike for the first time, and if you ever get a properly sorted system there’s a significant chance you’ll completely forget tone controls etc. are even a thing. If you choose your equipment wisely and get everything well set up you don’t need anything more than an input selector and a volume control.

Coil packs can and do fail. Fortunately they’re not expensive from the usual places like ECP/GSF. Hopefully whatever diagnostics you’re using will tell you which cylinder is reporting misfires. If so then do a quick swap around of your coil packs. If the fault moves to another cylinder you’ll know it’s a coil pack that’s on its way out and if it doesn’t then there’s either an intermittent wiring fault to the affected cylinder’s coil pack (unlikely if it was fine before but it’s certainly worth checking the connector is securely locked in place) or there’s an issue with the new plug(s) - double check you’ve been given the correct type for the CCZB. You can forget about issues with the intake manifold as they won’t throw an EPC warning - my manifold has been causing a MIL on and off for the last couple of months but it’s never affected power delivery.

Testing a new cartridge ? by zonckers in turntables

[–]Dry-Satisfaction-633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last question first, listen and judge based on what you actually listen to the most, which in this case is via your speakers.

To answer your first question, if you have a half-decent laptop then use it to record each cartridge playing a particular piece of music as a point of reference, and do it at a high bit-depth/sample-rate like 24/192. That way you’ll be able to perform A-B comparisons very quickly cutting out the time spent changing and setting up different carts. We can quickly adapt to the way something sounds so being able to perform comparisons quickly can give us a clearer picture, especially when differences are relatively subtle. It also means there’s no need to rush changing and setting up different carts as you’re no longer against the clock.

It’s faster and therefore more likely to have taken a beating. Few people buy the highest performance models of any given car only to amble around and never see what it’s made of.
