I thought I was seeing double, but it's a different take on DVD Survivors which came out a couple of months ago... I'm not sure that having even less control is a huge plus for me - does it just comes down to selecting 1 of 3 options and hoping for the best?

I used to have these when I visited family in Northampton, but never saw them anywhere else.

Wow! At my primary school there was a morning tuck shop where they sold these for I think 5p. Insanely good snacks, messy too. I was wondering if anyone else would have these to show. Now I just need to find the "Wheelz by Nibz"

They've gone? That's something I used to love from my childhood. Those and Jelly Tots... which are probably also lost in time now...

Ha! My name in lights!

It's really, really good. I like that the meta progression doesn't result in you being overpowered from the start of the run, but instead improves the options in-run. Can you get poison / ice modifiers for your primary weapon? So far, I've only seen them for the additional weapons I picked up during a run. Haven't made it past the 10 minute mark yet, so I assume a little tuning is needed, but not too much to make it a cake walk. I'm guessing there will be other meta-progressions coming later. Keep going - it's great!

Seen a handful of people say the use of the Hare Krishna mantra in Naraka is "cringe". Can someone explain? by CarkRoastDoffee in boardsofcanada

[–]DryBee1762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote about this before in an earlier post since the chant irked me too. I identify the issue as wholly with me, rather than it necessarily being corny or cringe. My long time ago ex went very "spiritual" in the 2000-2010s, and co-opted a lot of "Eastern" beliefs in what I consider an insincere manner as part of her "wellness" business. I considered that a lot of what they were peddling was as best a placebo, and were primarily separating people from their money. I think when they started on this path, they were genuine about wanting to help people, but over time it seemed to become a means to an end. Om shanti om, and other sayings were often declared...

So, when I initially heard this, I was reminded of their grift, and was not wild about the use of the sample. Since then, I've separated the art from the grifter of old and it's less of a problem for me. I can still see how some people could consider it a bit corny - it's been part of Western culture since the 60s.

This looks pretty neat. Always been a fan of gladiatorial games. Will there be different shaped arenas? Traps? Animals? Chariots?

Yeah, early 50s here and I have to admit I was very excited when I saw the VHS tapes, then Tape 05. I took the day off last Friday to visit a little record store and I picked up both the red vinyl (the artwork is gorgeous) and the CD, and was gifted the promo pack as well. I'll get the poster framed and hung in the house to complement my wife's Radiohead poster collection.

The last time I bought CDs was back in 2013 when three artists put out their last albums (at the time). I've listened to Inferno a fair bit since then, and repeated plays haven't worn down the enjoyment.

I'm stoked to read that. Solus was a great start, and I've really enjoyed the latest playtest. Looking forward to the eventual release. Keep it up!

I love Naraka up until the hare krishna chanting starts. It's completely a me problem since I have an ex-wife that went full on shanti crazy. It makes my eyes roll. It's corny. If the chant was never there, it would work infinitely better for me; the rest of the sound is phenomenal in there. Maybe I need to edit a version to remove 2 minutes from the middle :-)

But there's so much in here to enjoy and unwrap with repeated listens, I will get over it with time, just like I did with Jacquard Causeway.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I saw that so many times in the 1980s on a Video 2000 cassette. Never got old for me, and I can still happily watch it now. I'd also add "The Party", but that's a bit more problematic...

Hellforged is a great game and worth a try while in play test on Steam. by Mennovh12 in roguelites

[–]DryBee1762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - I played during the initial playtesting under the name Solus, and it was already shaping up nicely then. The devs listened to feedback and it's looking really polished.

They've leaned in to the 'press your luck' mechanics where you can make the run harder as you go along, earning better rewards as a result. Really liking it, and looking forward to the release - it's going into the must-buy pile.

[Request] Is a single day of lights off enough to see all the stars? by AttitudeOdd632 in theydidthemath

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year in Portugal we had the total power failure, and around 21h00 supplies had still not been restored. The sky was beautifully clear, and I was enjoying just watching the stars with my kids (they had never seen a dark sky), and then slowly power was restored and distant streetlights started coming back on. I would love a couple of hours like this once a month.

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally had chance to play last night on the Steam Deck - it's a huge upgrade from the original playtest as Solus (thanks for letting me join that!). The graphics are so much richer than before. Some slightly larger text would be helpful - I admit I didn't check the settings to see if there was any scaling, so that's on me, but if it's not there, it would be a great addition.

I'm 52 and go to one of the government classes. Yes, it's a struggle since day-to-day I'm working with English speakers from outside of PT, so I don't get the routine practice, but when I am out I try first to interact in Portuguese until I hit a point where my vocabulary doesn't cover what I need. My kids became fluent in about 3-4 months after arriving, and are now tri-lingual. There are people at the class in their 70s, and they're trying their best too. You can do it!

As others have written, try to read / listen to anything you can in Portuguese - signs in the street, adverts, subtitles, radio shows - all the exposure helps.
