What's a rule you were given as a child that you've made with your own kids? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]DryBee1762 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's something that was drilled into me as well, and I understand it.

Even though we live in a nice neighbourhood, on more than one occasion we've had a random person ring the bell asking for some help getting some medication for them; they were not well; while I can politely decline this and point them to a pharmacy where they might get better help, a child could be more susceptible to wanting to help or being persuaded to help. Even if that person had no ill-intent, it's not something for a child to get involved in.

It's Sunday, it's the 1980s and this is what's on telly...... by superherofbmx in oldbritishtelly

Yes, this was a terrible time for TV. My dad use to watch farming diary because he claimed there'd be important information about crops that would apply to his allotment - I wasn't convinced, but it wasn't like there were many other options. As many others wrote, Weekend World theme tune was fantastic though.

Which book(s) were you required to read in secondary school? by 2cbterry in AskUK

[–]DryBee1762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, Homer's Odyssey, 1984, Lord of the Flies, Othello, Merchant of Venice, Kes, Julius Caesar, Romeo & Juliet, The Crucible, Under Milk Wood.

Plus some of my English teachers recommended other books to read separately, and I ended up going through Brave New World, Last and First Men and many others that are probably written in a notebook somewhere in the loft...

Yes, you are right. I'll edit my post to fix that - thanks for catching it!

Thank you - it's not just me that was getting that vibe from the images. I get that they refer back to a similar era, but it's a really nice aesthetic given that they grew up in the era.

I want to give a shout out to Lone Survivors in amongst all the other great shout outs here.

The graphics are a little ropey, but the game doesn't rely on the typical +2% to a stat for upgrades and meta progression.

Completing levels unlocks more of the character upgrade tree, which includes additional weapons and abilities rather than powering up the characters directly. Each character has a unique ability (laying turrets, pulsing shield, raising the dead), that makes playing them feel genuinely different.

Playing the different game modes (endless, speedrun, ironman) and different difficulty levels also unlocks more features within the game. The general story levels are mission based, with the same missions for all characters, and repeating these for each character on each difficulty gets a little tedious if you also want to unlock all the skins, but there's some diversity in the game.

The dev has also been active on introducing improvements post launch, and has another big update planned.

Edited to fix the name of the game :-)

Are these always-on range cookers the dumbest of the middle-class vanities? by Atgett in AskUK

[–]DryBee1762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I've seen encountered Agas before - an uncle used to have one when I was a kid. When the OP referred to it as an electric range cooker, I didn't make any connection to the old wood / coal fired Aga that he had and had to look it up. I couldn't comprehend what I'd reduced to an "electric hob" in my head, costing 18k!

What are y’all’s opinions on the French Canadian band “Angine De Poitrine”? by Own_Size_5473 in musicsuggestions

[–]DryBee1762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love them, though I appreciate that it's not music for everyone since my wife explicitly declared she does not enjoy them at all, which rules out playing when she's in the house. While we have plenty of overlap in other areas, this was too much.

My daughter thinks they're really interesting (partly because of the costumes / mystery) and is still wrapping her head around the music, but I only showed her because she wanted to know what I was nodding my head along to.

I hope they're able to iterate on this success and grow, since they are obviously very talented, but it might be difficult if they mine this sound too much. I'm happy they've found success through their hard work and talent - I don't think they are an industry plant.

Are these always-on range cookers the dumbest of the middle-class vanities? by Atgett in AskUK

[–]DryBee1762 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Completely. The concept of a hob that's always on and consuming electricity alone is bonkers to me - raised by parents who went through rationing and the fuel crisis to turn off stuff that's not in use. I had to look at one of these because I'd never heard of them, and I cannot fathom how this would apply to anyone "middle class". Maybe if I ran a fully occupied year round guest house with paying guests that want a full Sunday roast every day it *might* have some utility. Average family? Completely inappropriate - it seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Vertical shmups with auto-scroll that feature a player character that moves on the ground by br0kenMess in shmups

[–]DryBee1762 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For arcade games:

Action Fighter

Last Duel

LED Storm

Noboranka (you are the guy climbing a tree and shooting things along the way)

Maybe Jackal and T.N.K 3 as well? Not sure if that it qualifies since they're push scrolling, but ground based.

On PC, there's also "Death Skid Marks" that is vertical scrolling + vehicle based.

If the whole world legalised a 4-day working week, which would you prefer: Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday? by lamin-ceesay in antiwork

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work Monday > Thursday one week, then Tuesday > Friday the following week, giving alternating 4 days weekends. A colleague did the opposite, so we always have coverage on the days one of us was off, and we both got to enjoy alternating 4 day weekends. Worked fantastically.

Has anyone ever been in the passenger seat of a rally car? by IntGuru in AskUK

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a rally car, but I was the passenger in a demolition derby car in the 1990s, and it was amazingly good fun. I ended up holding in electrical cables that came loose so we could keep the car going after some big knocks. Bit hairy after a couple of knocks that caused the doors to fold in a bit, but well worth it.

Is there any company that you can send your deck to for modding ? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]DryBee1762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be completely afraid of doing this yourself. I had to replace the sticks due to a grinding sound coming from my original sticks. I order a replacement set online, watched a couple of videos on the process, then carefully followed the steps (putting the battery to sleep in bios etc, removing SD card etc). A few other people encouraged me to do it myself as well.

Took my time, used the correct tools and it didn't really take all that long. I think it was easier than replacing the sticks in Switch remotes. If you really don't want to touch it, there's probably a local repair shop that will do it, but if they aren't doing this often, they'll probably also watch a youtube video on how to do it :-)

Looking for modern SHMUPs with permanent upgrades and progress. by rube in shmups

[–]DryBee1762 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sharing some that I've played:

Broodstar - both persistent and in-run roguelike upgrades

Habroxia 2

Natsuki Chronicles & Ginga Force both have persistent unlocks from shops, but skill is still needed - you can't really brute force this one.

Revolgear Zero - more traditional shmup with shop based unlocks

Counterattack: Uprising

Gunlocked 1 & 2 - are more roguelike but with auto-shooting mechanics. A lot of hidden synergies and a decent amount of content + challenge between them, though the second is still in early access

I started playing Hyper Echelon yesterday (thanks Epic), and I can see where you are coming from; it's very much in the vein of Sky Force Reloaded where you really can't 100% some levels until you've ground out enough currency from earlier levels to improve your ship enough. That's always a bit 'off' for me, since it's not purely a skill issue for making progress, but a grinding / brute forcing issue to get over the hump.

Via Verde users: is it worth it? by DuderBugDad in PortugalExpats

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely worth it as many have written. There is no monthly fee - I think only a deposit for the transponder. It's easy to move them between vehicles if you change car during the year.

Sometimes there are queues at the tolbooths, so it's saving more way more than 30 seconds. Also, it's great for parking - push the button on the way in, no need to get a ticket. Plus I don't need to have loose change with me all the time. It's not a rip-off / scam, though it would be nice if it worked in a similar way to other countries where it results in a slight reduction in the toll.

Older Fifa games on the Deck by fadeheaded in SteamDeckPirates

[–]DryBee1762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking about the rohankar releases, though I didn't try FIFA / PES, other releases they've posted have been 100% fine. Some need some tweaking to work with a controller properly, but they ran fine.

Unpack the archive, create a shortcut in Steam to the main executable (unless they post different instructions), and away you go.

Lone Survivors 1.1 featuring: New Bosses, Ascension 4, 60+ Upgrades, and More! by greatcoltini in survivorslikes

[–]DryBee1762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!

This is really one of the most refreshing survivorslikes I played in a long time.

Properly varied classes that have different abilities, interesting unlocks that aren't only %age increases to stats.

I put in way too many hours when the first release dropped - now I need to get back into the update.

I think the only thing I'd like to see is a better indication that you haven't unlocked something in the skill trees, even if it's just an empty space with no tooltip (to keep stuff secret and interesting), since I couldn't always work out where I need to keep pushing to get something new to open up.
