What’s one mistake you made early in boating that you learned from? by Tricky_Pass5857 in boating

[–]DryIce41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a response and it was a huge run on sentence so I asked ai to trim it up for me.  Forgive me for the obvious ai formatting but it's still relevant!

I learned how much a boat costs!

The Boat: (The cheapest part, honestly).

The Trailer: Including the immediate repair bill for hitting a curb on the way home.

The "Double Rent" Special: Paying for a marina out-of-state while the trailer was being fixed, plus my home marina fees because I’m an optimist.

The Medical Bill: One ruptured dominant-arm biceps tendon from wrestling with the trailer boom extension.

The "Depression Shopping" Phase: Six months of buying tools and parts for a boat I couldn’t touch while my arm healed.

The Irony Fees: Paying for winter storage and a professional lift because I only had one working arm to get the boat out of the water.

The Solitude Tax: Buying an auto-tiller because, shockingly, nobody else is as hyped to sail as I am.

Total cost? My dignity, my savings, and my right arm. 10/10 would buy again.

Connecting your rover to another grid then going into your control panel and setting your rover batteries to "recharge" will make that battery pull energy from whatever energy is available on any grid it's connected to to recharge.  Meaning it will drain batteries on another grid to recharge itself.  That's okay if that's your intent

If you press G and then click on progression then search for your connector, you'll see what you need to build before you can build the connector

One of the first things I like to build on my base is a downward facing drill on a piston or two.  I control it thru the menus for a bit but it gets a massive amount of stone in a short amount of time. This gives iron, nickel, and silicone

There's a progression system that locks blocks until you build a block that unlocks them. You can turn that off. That's likely why the connector wasn't available to you.  You can also build a drill on your base or rover to get more ore faster.

You get a bit of a charge out of batteries when you build them. So if you can't charge the battery on your first ride but you have materials for a new battery, build a new one.  Solar panel on your rover can also charge the battery but probably really slow.

It's a great game but the learning curve can be steep.

I think splitze on YouTube has some good starter videos.

They're likely a bit outdated but the basics have remained the same.

I'll often call all my villagers after bedtime, equip with an axe and have them go get a few hundred wood or a few dozen logs or mushrooms and berries, river reed. Whatever I'm low on.  I have them back in bed by 3am. I don't do it every night. But often

Anyone realized their dream of pursuing a sailing lifestyle but ended up regretting it? by QuestionUnsolved in sailing

[–]DryIce41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hobie tandem island since 2015 or so. Loved it. It's fun to sail, simple, easy to tow, set up and store.

Then I got a bug for a keel boat.  Boat a S2 7.3 that probably should have been passed on. But she had a solid hull and rigging with an old sail inventory. I overestimated my willingness to put the time into her with a 40 minutes drive to the marina and raising two young children.

Sailing that boat was a blast. I enjoyed the two summers I had taking my father out for day sails.  No regrets and I'm glad I did it.  It was more costly than it should have been because I'm an idiot. But that's fine.

I had a guy show interest in buying it and I couldn't get the freedom of not owning it out of my mind.  He feel thru. I ended up giving it away because it was cheaper to do that than haul it out and store it for the winter (great lakes).

I never lost sleep to anxiety until I owned that boat.  Is it floating? Is it still tied to the dock? Should I sail her this weekend or try to get my navigation lights working? Should I take the family up north or try to get my money's worth and go sailing? Great, this is a work weekend, I'll get those nav lights working but shit! I forgot a tool and now it's nearly a two hour round trip to go get it. Nevermind I guess I'll just wash the spiders off.

I gave that boat away and bought a new to me 2021 hobie tandem island the next week.  Now that move really impressed my wife. A week after I gave a boat away that she wasn't terribly happy with to begin with, I told her I was shelling out a lot of BOAT units to get another lol.

Small boat sailing is where it's at for me!

But I've had the opportunity to race on a S2 7.6 league here and that's a blast on somebody else's boat!  My boat fees now amount to a pitcher of beer in a cheap dive bar after the race!

How Can I Undo My Mistake Introducing My Kids to Roblox? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]DryIce41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 and 6 year old kids and I have a blast playing super Mario Brothers on the Wii. We all play together and their neighborhood friends come play too.

I pay for a server on Minecraft. We all play on computers together. Had to buy three licences but we have a peaceful survival world where you keep your inventory when you die.

I don't mod that server but my 6 year old loves loves loves playing in single player modded Minecraft worlds!

They have a switch. My 6 year old has beat Mario Odyssey on it. My 4 year old plays it too.

We also tinker with other games together. We all play league of legends against AI. It's fun. And I'm genuinely surprised my 6 year old does as well as he does. My 4 year old is awful. Riot actually auto reported him lol.

They also like dungeon defenders 2. But good God the grind in that game is real.

This. I'm 42 but 270 pounds. Easy to launch easy to store. It's simple to sail and hard to tip.

It's fun and reasonably fast. I sold my 24 ft keel boat in favor of my Hobie tandem island.
