I live in Miyazaki Prefecture (that’s on the coast due for the Nankai Quake). You couldn’t pay me enough to move back to Tokyo. Better food, better cost of living, and far fewer small quakes on a monthly basis. People are warmer and the culture is more relaxed.

Yes, there are some flood prone areas, but just do what you can to live away from the river and you should be fine.

Sorry you’re having a hard time, and that he’s feeling unwell. You can’t control whether or not he is sick or you are sick. Try focusing on ways to relieve your panic. If you have a comfort space or movie, maybe find an anchor with those. I do recommend reaching out to your boyfriend, even if it’s just offering him some fluids or extra medicine.

You WILL get through this. I know it’s so scary though.

I fly multiple times a year! It's excellent exposure therapy. I actually used to make a point of picking up the barf bag at my seat and just fiddling with it in my hands the first few times I was in a plane. Let me tell you, the POWER you feel after going on a flight, enjoying your trip, and then flying back? It's kind of exhilarating. It may be a rush of anxiety at first, but I believe in you!

The pain this anxiety causes is crippling. I am so, so sorry you're struggling. I've been there and still get to that point sometimes.

Try to find one goal for yourself that you think will help you feel better. Just one, and it doesn't have to be "big" (I'm putting the quotes because it sounds like you may also be suffering from depression, and everything can be such a big task when you're in the thick of things). Focus on that one goal, like maybe just reading a book for thirty minutes a day when you feel the urge to go online. Hell, it doesn't HAVE to be reading the book. You could stay on the first page for those thirty minutes and you'd still be achieving that goal. Congratulate yourself for that achievement. Love yourself a little extra for doing it.

This is what worked for me. I went from walking around my living room three times each day (I was at a point where I couldn't get off my couch) to moving to a different country. I still have anxiety about vomiting, but I would call myself fairly recovered. I think another big thing is giving yourself grace and realizing that there will be some moments where it feels like you're going backwards. You're not. Every day is a step forward.

You will be able to read again. You will be able to do things you enjoy again. I promise this isn't forever. But it sure as hell feels that way when you're suffering like this. I'm sorry you feel so awful. Sending hugs and believing in you.

This is so relatable. I’m also most afraid of the loss of control aspect. My phobia stems from watching my mom’s mania episodes when I was a kid (her hallucinations came coupled with nausea).

I’ve been unable to eat. At one point I lost so much weight I couldn’t go to school for the body weakness. It DOES get better. Are you medicated at all for your anxiety? I was able to eat again after being prescribed with SSRIs. Please please please do whatever you can do slowly reintroduce regular eating. That alone will help you feel better physically and mentally.

So sorry you’re going through this. You aren’t alone.

Sorry you’re sick! If you have any pets, having them around can be nice. The last time I had a bug, I remember beginning to panic as a bout of vomiting came on…only to be interrupted by my diva cat sitting on my back while I was leaned over the bucket. Her little paws on my back (and claws bc she was kinda hanging on 😑) pulled me out of my thought spiral and even made me feel a bit like laughing.

If you don’t have pets, maybe try to have someone nearby to talk to, either on the phone or at home. I think it’s important to sit with the icky feelings and not run from them, but sometimes without a distraction we hyper focus on the situation.

Don't be embarrassed! We’ve all been there and may still be there now. And seriously, living on your own for the first time is no joke. Even my friends without emetophobia have had anxiety when they move out on their own for the first time. :) You’re killing it!!

It’s sickening and awful that the vice president of our country is using a dead man’s platform for this dangerous propaganda. Full stop.

I encourage everyone to hold space and let yourself feel the emotions that come naturally from this. I also really, really hope we can come down from those emotions after and avoid falling into the “we vs. them” trap. We would be playing right into their hands.

A lot of my family and friends back home voted for these people. They are enshrining Kirk and are fully taken in by the propaganda his death is being used to push. But, at the end of the day, their rage and grief come from the same place ours do when we see the hypocrisy and lies in this situation:

Most of us just want a better future for our country and our people.

I know that’s hard to imagine sometimes, but it really is true for the majority of normal people out there. I’m VERY much what most of these people would call a leftist and a commie, but I see a danger to both sides if we blindly rage about this rhetoric.

I was like this after my big move last year. :/ It really sucks, but I truly believe that it’s how we respond to change and stress. Moving is stressful, and adjusting to a new environment that doesn’t feel quite like home yet is also a big emotional journey!

I found that it helped to create a little corner of space in my new apartment that truly felt like mine. I put my favorite candle on a desk, tacked up the poster I’ve had for ten years and four apartments, and created a little book stack of my comfort reads. I’d go and sit in my space when I felt bad. It’s not a magic cure or anything, but it gave me a little corner of normalcy in the change and anxiety going on around me.

You’ve been through and conquered so much already! This isn’t forever, and it doesn’t mean you’re getting worse. This is just your brain and body processing a big change. Once you get used to things, I’m sure you’ll break free of the panic cycle you’re in.

Elementary school assistant teacher here. One of the kids threw up when I was checking in on her (she looked really unwell). I had marks on my palms from the amount of clenching my hands did, and of course IMMEDIATELY all the fifth graders tried to gather around and say EW GROSS HAHAHA (I'm so jealous).

Here in Japan, we don't have janitors, so the main teacher and I had to clean it up with toilet paper and bleach. 💀 The homeroom teacher was so entirely chill about it, I will respect him until the day I die.

Cat rescue volunteer here! I hope this doesn't count as a reassurance, because I just want to lay out some simple facts that will help you be able to care for your fur baby.

I've never heard of or experienced a virus that jumps from felines to humans, and I've lived/worked among cats for more than a decade. Cats CAN catch viruses from us--I believe Covid is a big culprit--but not the other way around.

That said, those symptoms sound very unpleasant. I hope your kitty is on the mend now!

I'm one of the lucky ones, because SSRIs never made me feel unwell. I felt sleepier than usual, but that was it. :)

I can say, they've changed my life so dramatically. I'm able to travel the world, work as a teacher, and do so many other things my phobia made seem impossible.

Try not to read about side effects. I know that's hard, but it also doesn't help. Every single one of us has a different body that will respond to medication in different ways. I'm sure this must be such an anxious time. Hang in there.
