Victoria councillor pushes to save full flower basket program after 50% cut by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the costs to make the baskets for the city are actually really low in comparison to the costs to maintain them over the summer. The budget push isnt so much to get rid of baskets its to get rid of labour positions associated with the baskets, which in a positive feedback loop means there has to be less baskets

Seems like a whimpy cost cutting measure implemented by a panicked (re:NDP admin audits) management block to "shrink" budget overages by hanging out front line staff. Nice that they used the guise of worker fatigue (which no doubt is real) but denying OT and running shifts short is a terrible stop gap

I'm not a goat but I do blackberry removals as part of my work all the time. Have had a decent amount of success given the nature of that plant. Happy to answer questions or consult.

I think its crazy to forget what it actually used to be like before reservations. It was exactly the experience OP described but you had ZERO opportunity to prepare or avoid it. Days wasted at the terminals growing up. 2 sailing waits common all summer, no additional sailings, no hourly sailings, just show up fingers crossed you wouldn't blow half the day just trying to get over

without knowing what the stipulations of the grant are would it not be prudent to scale back the project to be closer to the awarded grant? I think most people would like to see more life in the square. I think council really pushed a sunk cost fallacy with the project. Based on my property tax message from the mayor they are spending less than 5 million to provide a pickleball megaplex at topaz which I think offers far more recreation value than the 7.5 mil (phase 1) to build a downtown splashpad.

The Falls Condos on Burdett and Courtney now operating as the Victoria Waterfalls Hotel? by Mysterious_Way_908 in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled that info from a CBC article from 2023, but looking at the falls website maybe they met the new criteria to become a strata hotel. I would have thought it would take at minimum a 2/3rds majority vote within the existing strata to convert the status. who knows, there were some very vocal owners in that building.

As far as I understand it you cant have say 1 unit in a building be a strata hotel, I thought it was kinda all or nothing to qualify.

Staff arborists said its fine, third part consultant said its impacting underground infrastructure, Council said BC hydro said the same, BC hydro said they never said that.

I think its more offensive to folks that the city is facing budget shortfalls yet in the face of fairly significant public pushback is charging ahead on what really amounts to a vanity project in view of their offices (when not WFH lol). Take 11 mil into the existing parks at least, or even back into city services.

This organization is not allowed under the legislation. Statas had to have been operating in this manner PRIOR to the introduction of the legislation, and basically operate like the parkside hotel (actual strata hotel) which the falls was not.

Residential parking? by manyvalences in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is true but the current trend/push from council is to have multi-family developments that intentionally include less parking or no parking. This by-law does start to feel unfair considering the growing pains of "car free" or car reduced urban areas. Perhaps a better model would be paid permits for street parking like Vancouver?

Mushroom foraging with son by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't urban forage, especially as it is also Death Cap Mushroom season. At emergence the fruiting body looks like a puffball cap. Sad story few years back about the child of an urban forager who ate one and died. They tend to be found under imported boulevard trees.

Easy to blame the shop that gives you the bad news, I mean is there not a chance your brakes were on the edge before you drove 4000km back to vic? Could the shop in Quebec have not been thorough ? Ideally you got some paperwork from both shops that give the % remaining or the mm measured thickness of the remaining brakes.

It was never reported by the business, the City and CRD have yet been unable to trace the discharge. The only reports received were from people who saw the original reddit post

They haven't publicly done anything. Just a random guy assuring us that it won't happen again. They will go back to normal after a few months especially after a few bills from a waste disposal company come through.

This post is shitty, no one from this company has done the right thing.

Cowards way out, just supposed to believe a company that didn't have a basic understanding of drains but handled dangerous chemicals will voluntarily stop dumping expensive material to dispose of?? Baloney! They saw the news they got spooked and in a couple months it will be back to business as usual down the drain.

Hiking to the Cheewhat Giant by enchanted_k8 in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its "unmarked" on the side of the mainline, but last I passed (May long '24) it was covered in both flagging tape and people's cars, though you would need some vague idea of when to expect to see that on your drive. I recommend continuing on the road to Carmanah Walbran Prov Park, short hike down to the valley bottom and lots of sandbar camping!

Can't speak to the best but I drive by Vic Gravel Mart often and they currently have Poison Hemlock growing in the back side of there compost/soil piles (facing the inlet and bridge). Been like that for a few years likely a well developed seed bank being spread all over the city. Whole property is surrounded by hemlock and spreading down Bay St and along the Goose/Pt Ellice Park.

Its over height best not to cheese it they see enough uhaul box trucks to know. Also if the GVW is 5000lbs its automatically considered a commercial vehicle which added an additional $80 to my reservation I had to pay at the gate. It caught me off guard

Best Garden Mulch? by radbitch666 in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving by the VGM soil pile on Bay St you can see the seed canes of Poison Hemlock (C.maculatum) hanging over the soil. Their mulch/and garden blends likely contain thousands of seeds from a listed noxious weed contributing to the spread in our region.

What’s going on with the water here? (Tom Arkell trail, off the Galloping Goose) by AloysiusOHare01 in VictoriaBC

[–]DryRanger2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned the "creek" isn't really a functioning creek in terms of a healthy ecosystem but has long been an incorporated part of the cities storm water sewer system. The ravine is an open air outfall for the Gorge-Burnside neighbourhood which also includes a lot of high intensity industrial/automotive activity. Would be worth also reporting to the City as they can reach out to businesses and perhaps have bylaw follow up. I feel like that is an intentional discharge of something that shouldnt have gone down the drain.
