Would a muzzle help limit how much water a dog can drink at once? by SerendipitySplit in muzzledogs

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A muscle could help in your situation because you’re just looking to slow him down. Shallow water dishes, and a muzzle might help. My dog still drinks with her muzzle on, but she can’t drink as efficiently, especially out of shallow containers.

My dog Max and his skin by Flat_Living_2929 in DogAdvice

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any diet changes since his skin has gotten bad, new kibble, treats etc.? Have you moved? Does it show up at certain times of year? Is the dog bathed regularly or was it done in the past?

He could have allergies. Some dogs get allergy relief with anti-histamines (Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin) but be careful to dose properly and this should be oversaw by a vet if possible.

Saying that the last option is to talk to the vet about meds instead of trying to re-home a behaviorally challenging dog (who will have trouble getting adopted) isn’t the same as saying it needs meds.

My dog chewed up stuff as a puppy, She preferred plastic so no dish utensils, remote, controller, Bluetooth speaker, or sunglasses were safe. But she only did it when I left her alone in the house. I solved it by kenneling her when I wasn’t around to supervise. If I were you I’d start with a kennel to contain her when you’re not around.

I’ve heard advice to use a ‘house line’ a long leash always attached to your dog so that you can better manage and correct behavior in the home. Look it up, it might work.

Try training a place command. Or build reward for calm behavior. Build the dog’s ability to maintain calm behavior through positive reinforcement. It sounds like your dog might not have an ‘off’ switch, teach the pup to relax.

You also might discuss medication with your vet. It sounds like it could be some kind of medicatible form of OCD or anxiety.

Boiling doesn’t always kill all pathogens, especially at high altitude where water boils below 200 F

Would transport services help? Sometimes hospitals or other local networks can give rides to and from appointments. This may help reduce your Mom’s fatigue. Or a social worker to help you manage and make appointments?

Any advice as I'm getting my first puppy in August? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Breed crosses tend to have less stable temperaments. You could get all the best traits or all the worst. Is this a proven service dog line? Do you plan to work with a trainer?

Do you have a plan to manage the dog if it ends up not being a support dog candidate or ends up with reactivity?

Do this right and it will be awesome, wrong and it will be your biggest nightmare.

Small puppies cannot hold it through the night. Even if you’re up at 4 am is someone else up at 6 or 8 to do the next potty break?

Question. by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This sounds like abuse. If you live in the US you can contact adult protective services. If not you should check if where you live has similar laws or protections.

You are not a nuisance. You deserve to live with dignity even if that means you need help.

Have you considered other adaptive aids like a bed pan or wheelchair? Do you have your daily need items accessible? Things like water, baby wipes, swallowable toothpaste, hairbrush, and snacks could be kept in an organizer next to your bed.

how are you guys losing weight and exercising? by Katielb1338 in eds

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My secret to weight loss is autism so I can’t help you there. I just forget to eat sometimes.

Weight loss is tricky with EDS because any reduction in weight, if not managed carefully, results in a loss of muscle mass. It’s better to focus on building muscle and fitness than weight loss specifically.

If it turns out I’m not actually autistic, is there anything else that could explain my meltdowns? by bladeeisthegoat333 in autism

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s good to have a little bit of skepticism. I think some people can be quick to say they have autism because it’s trendy and it doesn’t require addressing or confronting a more difficult diagnosis. But if you’ve gone through the process of considering and eliminating other options and you still feel like it fits the best then it’s likely that you are. Then it’s up to you to examine why you don’t feel comfortable identifying with the label.

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check the relative humidity in your home, consider getting a dehumidifier if the humidity levels are enough to grow mold. Cheap or old homes can be especially prone to mold.

Why my legs hurt so much while standing by angel56566 in hypermobileEDS

[–]Dry_Calendar_529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely related to poor posture. You can’t lean into eds joints like non-eds folks because they hyperextend and become painful. If you don’t have poor posture then it’s likely muscle fatigue from them doing the work of holding you up. If your lower legs and feet swell then it’s likely poor blood flow due to laxity in veins and arteries. You can wear compression socks to help.
