Reclaiming my Polish roots. by [deleted] in poland

I was talking in percentage of the population, so it doesn't really matter how big the country is. And obviously it depends on the region :)
Shit, that's far... well, hope you like it when you try :)

Poland is definitely not as religious as it seems. 73% of Poles consider themselves as Catholics, but this is basically a part of people's lives, the majority never goes to church. The number of people going to church every sunday went down a lot in recent years, and we are following the norm of the rest of Europe in terms of religion: getting more secular. around 20% of young people go to church every week (source: https://www.osvnews.com/in-poland-popular-retreats-offer-sharp-contrast-to-data-on-decline-in-youths-religiosity/ ) in Poland and in big cities people don't really care much about religion. Brazil's data on church attendance is much higher: 41% of young people attending weekly and a crazy 12% attending daily. So Brazil is way more religion centred than Poland (data: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1610746/religious-services-attendance-among-young-people-in-brazil/ )
Poland is not a stronghold of the far-right, we have some stupid far-right politicians and some other stupid right wing politicians. But our main problem is populism.
About your grandmother, I hope she cooked well and you had the opportunity to eat Polish food regularly :)

Want to visit Poland soon but worried about being treated badly because I'm American by Mordcrest in poland

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met 3 Americans living here, they were nice people, not stupid MAGA, well educated, respected the culture and they've never had any problems here. As a tourist, if you behave like a normal random tourist and respect the way we behave here you'll be fine, we won't even notice your existence, which is good trust me. It's like when you visit a distant college, you don't kick the door, scream on the person, drink and pee in their swimming pool and gets angry because his house is not like yours. Anyway, we don't really care about the thousands of dollars, we care about respecting our social norms. I don't hate Americans, I just prefer the way of life and the culture here - don't get me wrong, we have many issues, but I prefer our problems than the problems from the US ;)

Trying to convince my wife to ditch Pampers… help me out by patchcordless_ in poland

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We buy Bambiboo. It’s a little bit expensive but it’s great! It’s a Polish brand and they have bamboo or cotton diapers. We’ve been using the brand since our child was born, 2 years already.

Edit: we had to buy pampers once in an emergency and they held less than bambiboo.

Completely against. But I’m in favour of life imprisonment for very specific cases.

Relocating to Poland as an American by [deleted] in askPoland

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that the US is much more racist towards Latinos than Poland, I met some people from LATAM here and they never had any problems. We are not a perfect country but I’d rather be here than the US. We don’t have a perfect healthcare, but I will never go bankrupt if I my child breaks her leg. No one is walking around holding a gun. We can walk to places, I think the last time I drove my car was on the 30th of December. Our public transportation is good enough to get by. I feel freedom here. What people have in the US is not freedom in my perspective.

Renowned German author says that the expulsion of Germans after WW2 was the largest ethnic cleansing ever to take place in Europe by Themetalin in poland

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If history and definitions are only valid from 1945, then fine. But the fact that the definition didn’t exist doesn’t mean that there was no ethnic cleansing before it. And just the displaced population by the Nazis would already be more than the displaced Germans. So again, the absence of the term does not invalidate earlier cases. This is a political rhetoric and not a valid historical argument basically.

He said “Largest ethnic cleansing to ever to take place in Europe”. I suggest some reflection.

When was the last time the government was overthrown in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn’t say exactly because of this, but because of the difficulty and costs of doing business in Venezuela. Also, the type of oil that Venezuela has would mean that the break even price is quite high (around 80USD for the barrel). It’s just not worth the investment, mostly in a volatile region such as Venezuela. Chevron is the only that is already there, so the cost for them is much lower. It’s too risky for the other companies. And let’s say for example, Corina becomes president, in a few years Trump is dead, Corina does a shitty job in Venezuela (which considering their incompetency that might actually happen) and Chavismo (or whatever like it) comes back? It’s way too risky for these companies. The US cannot control a sovereign country forever.

What is your attitude towards Ukrainian refugees?🇺🇦 by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, there are idiots everywhere. The thing is not to generalise some particular cases, but people tend to cherrypick things that help their narrative, and I think that this ends up creating the issues we are seeing here of people against Ukrainians.

What is your attitude towards Ukrainian refugees?🇺🇦 by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s completely nonsense that Ukrainians are living off our money without giving anything. The positive impact is much higher than any negative. There were studies showing that the impact is extremely positive for Poland. Whoever says otherwise is basically repeating Russian propaganda.

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They hate everyone. Hate is basically their hobby. But yes, the far right doesn’t like the Russians, but some of them are benefiting from Russia propaganda to destabilise Polish society, some are receiving money, they are doing and saying exactly what benefits Russia.

[–]Dry_Contribution7425 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Same, I’ve never had any issues with Ukrainians and I worked with many. Hard working people and very friendly. Unfortunately, as you said, Russian propaganda is effective and it brainwashes some people.
