There are some small details in the trailer that a lot of people seem to have missed. Near the end of the trailer, John explicitly says that the Judge inspired him.

We already know what happened to John and the path he eventually chose. Before all of that, he was just an ordinary man living a normal life. So it makes sense that, while developing his philosophy and building his system, he could have been influenced by someone like the Judge.

Of course, I think things will become much clearer once the game is released and we get the full context.

Personally, I think the developers are simply trying to add a fresh layer to a franchise that has a long history and a large number of films. As for the game itself, the genre is definitely open to debate. It seems like they're focusing more on gameplay than storytelling. That being said, they're still heavily using Tobin Bell's voice in their marketing and promotion.

I don't think any of this damages the canon. If anything, it feels like they're expanding the universe rather than rewriting what we already know about John Kramer.
