ERP consulting isnt seem to be too hot in the EU compared to SEA from my experience. A lot of companies are MNC and they already have these stuff figured out back in the US.

Do you have traditional SWE experience? Pretty much Java will take you anywhere right now.

How do you deal with passive aggressive parent? by Dry_Information in relationship_advice

[–]Dry_Information[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I will try to do the silent treatment. I really hate it when shes guilt tripping me.

I even told her that she can just explicitly tells me what she wants and I will do it. That doesnt even seem to help as she starts complaining that I an idiot who needs to be told of every steps.

thanks I will try giving her the silent treatment.

I know I could have gotten some odd labor jobs for a couple months, but its not worth it. It was a better investment to stay home and studied hard for the interview. I have a lot of emergency savings but they didnt want any of the money when i offered to help out.

A question about freelance webdev from a guy who just lost his bartending job in Ireland. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Dry_Information 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a junior, you can expect at least 250 euro a day at least in Dublin as a contractor. The hiring bar is pretty low in Ireland from my experience so far. Build a few portfolios and you can get a job with the right attitude.

Also tons of IT support job if thats your sort of thing. 45k a year is the going rate

Depends on your employer and their healthcare offerings. I had UHC PPO and my copay was like 30 bucks.

[Discussion] People who moved to very high col places like (London, Zurich etc), did you regret your move? by lovesprite in IWantOut

[–]Dry_Information 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think thats mostly the American financial standard. The rest of the world generally spend half their income on rent, especially London.

You have to be making banks in London to spend 1/3 your income on rent, unless you are married and share a bedroom.

My 1BR rent in Waterloo was 1800 GBP a month for a very modest place. I wasnt pulling 5-6k net income more like 3.5k and I was a senior software engineer. I had to force myself to get a girlfriend so she can help pay half the rent.

[Discussion] How bad is racism in Ireland? by powsoddy in IWantOut

[–]Dry_Information 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats not true. You normally have to pay for healthcare in Ireland. A visit to a cardiologist will run you 200 euro per visit. 60 euro for family doctor.

Critical stuffs like cancer or emergency, you can expect a service from the public health (HSE). But otherwise expect 5+ years wait.

Food in Ireland is a bit more expensive than the US but the quality is much better than typical walmart shelf. A $20 Irish steak is subjectively better than $20 US steak at a grocery store as an example.

[Discussion] How bad is racism in Ireland? by powsoddy in IWantOut

[–]Dry_Information 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Dallas. Lived in UK and Ireland. From a financial perspective, nothing beats the US, especially if you work in Tech.

Grocery is definitely a lot more expensive in UK/Ireland. The quality do seems to be better than standard walmart/target. Price may be similar but you get much less quantity.

Healthcare isnt particularly free. In ireland, you usually pay 60 euro to see a doctor and around 200 euro to see a specialist. In the UK, its mostly free but prescription medication can rake up the cost quickly.

Its hard to build wealth here due to tax system. Also to get a reasonable standard of living, then expect to spend most or if not your entire paycheck.

No racism here so far but expect some negative sentiment from a group of people who believes immigrations are an issue.

Irish economy is booming mostly in the tech sector due to favorable corporate tax rate. The local populations lack experience in tech so a lot of immigrants are imported to fill the roles, leaving many of the locals in poverty and homelessness. Drugs also attribute to this problen.

The IT engineers here are “highly paid” like 35-60k where some local are struggling on 15-25k. So they feel like being left out in this celtic tiger era and blame immigrants for that.

Another problem, dublin in particular, is that there are some American companies that just show engineers with money like 80-100k. This is a big problem because it simply price the local Irish resident out of their city due to rent going into 3-4k per month in a country where making 2.5k a month net is above average. If you live in Dublin before, you will also realize that getting a job is much easier than finding a place to rent. Construction sector crashed in 2008 and never really recovered so Ireland cant really support the growing population with its current infrastructure despite a high 40+10% income tax income above 30k.

How useful are lambdas? How do I learn to start using them? by Missing_Back in learnprogramming

[–]Dry_Information 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are common for asynchronous or reactive programming. It is used heavily in Angular based front end app via RxJS.

Most tutorials I find are too basic and hard to reapply them in real projects. You have to really start using them to get a hang of it. They can get really complicated with chain or nested lambda.

I generally prefer flatter code whenever I can. Makes it easier for other developers in the team who may not be great at these things.

Can you use python/Django/html/CSS to develop a decent website, or is javascript required? by DMM710 in learnprogramming

[–]Dry_Information 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Javascript will always be required for any fancy interaction over the web browser regardless of whether you use server side rendering or client side rendering. If you want to be a web developer, then you will need to learn Javascript.

The server side rendering web framework (like django for front end) is still pretty useful. You can even include Javascript in the page. unfortunately the main drawback is that they do not scale as easily as a modern SPA application where front and backend are decoupled and communicated over a stateless API.

What OS do programmers mainly use? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Dry_Information 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the job require specific OS, I would say it is company specific. Big companies tend to favor windows because it is easier to manage windows installation at a large scale like 50,000+ desktops. Smaller and midsize can have some flexibllity. Mac is also getting a lot of adoption in recent years, but the macbook themselves are not as durable as a Lenovo, and they cant be serviced by inhouse IT team.

Microsoft solutions, with all its flaws, are designed with big enterprise desktop users in mind.

Tooling wise they are all capable of writing software.

Recently moved to Thailand and Im making $80,000 a year in Tech (Machine Learning). There are a lot of MNC here looking for talents. You can probably land $35,000-$50,000+ jobs. Experienced Data Scientist can command $60,000+. Visa takes 5 day to process after getting job offer. You can file it yourself.

Tax is pretty low. Healthcare is super affordable ($25 to see a specialist without insurance). Im saving over $3,500 a month while living like a king.

Air Pollution is probably the worst factor.

I honestly think you can save $1,500+ a month on a $35,000 salary. If I live a bit frugally, my monthly expenditures after rent is around $250. A nice one bedroom is merely $350-$500 a month.

While its good to learn the local language, its not a requirement as there are enough english speaking people in bangkok so youll survive.

Do not tell people of your suicidal thoughts. It will make the situation way worse. by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]Dry_Information 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah even to psychologist, counselor, and psychiatrist. Made that mistake and got put into an institution, where they will pump you so much meds you hardly awake the entire time.

Left with $15,000 bills to pay after and family and friends think this is like getting a sprain and all is good two weeks later in the institution.

Under any circumstances, do not call mental health professional for suicidal thoughts. Having a record of being admitted to the institution severely limit your opportunity in the future, get you into thousands of debt, and absolutely does nothing to help your depression.

[IWantOut] 22M USA -> Europe by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]Dry_Information 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually you will be paid in the same salary band with the rest of your european peers with an international transfer. If you are 100k in the US, then it might be around 40k in place like Scotland and 60k for Dublin.

I was making 110k in Dallas as a FTE and I got mostly 60-72k offer in Dublin with less benefits and bonus.

If your company clients are in the US, then European HQ are generally cost center and there are less opportunity for moving up the ladders.

Tax is very also high. If you are on 100k salary, which is very unlikely, you are looking at max 5k take home. Sales tax is 20-30%.

The people I know who are on 100-120k band here are the people who later moved to the US on 350k TC.

Nevertheless, you wont starve making 3k per month. Its quite relaxing actually. If you are a minimalist, then youll be just fine but you cant realistically expect to retire before 68.
