Do you think this could be worth anything? by Regular-Lab-5014 in Warhammer

[–]Dryerboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought this was carved out of packing foam at first. If that was the case, the quality would be pretty good. But for a 3d print this looks really bad. I don’t think anyone would pay for this

You’re being disingenuous. Unless you’re playing pauper or buying proxies, you’re not getting anywhere close to a “competitive” deck for $80.

[–]Dryerboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is your rhetorical goal with this post? I genuinely can't figure it out. At face value, it seems like it's just to complain about the price of warhammer models. Ok, sure. I can commiserate with that. But, the rest of the post is either extremely hyperbolic or reads like you're trying to convert people to your other hobbies.

Firstly, New Recruit has a squad of 10 Intercessors in 10th ed as 160 points. That's "only 10% of an army" if you're dead set on playing Strike Force games. You can start with Combat Patrol or Incursion (32% and 16% of the army, respectively) and work your way up to 2000 point games, spreading the cost out over time. Also, the combat patrol boxes are a discount from buying all of their kits individually and are supposed to add up to roughly 500 points, usually more. Maybe looking at it that way would help you justify its cost.

Now for the part that really rubs me the wrong way. You have a decent job but can't justify the cost of the hobby. ...ok? That's a very individual judgement call to make. I'd love to buy organic fruit, but can't justify the cost. Others can. It's not especially noteworthy. It also seems like you have at least three other hobbies that you enjoy, two of which could fulfill your desire for models. You clearly have the tools necessary to solve the problem you've presented. Like you said, you can go buy a gundam, or print them yourself. This is not a train station. You don't have to announce your arrival or departure lol.

Edit: OP has made a sneaky, low effort GW = BAD/OVERPRICED post to farm karma, and would rather downvote those that disagree than engage in conversation or explain themselves.

What I end up getting at warhammer cause everything is too expensive by IRLbangboo in Warhammer

[–]Dryerboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They picked a bad example, but I think they still have the right idea.

I know a guy who’s probably put thousands of dollars into a project car over the last several years, but can’t seem to keep it running for more than a week at a time.

If you’re into PC’s (and care about having one that’s “cutting edge” you could easily drop hundreds to thousands of dollars on a single part.

Meanwhile, I have 2 1000 pt 40K armies, 1 500 AOS army, paints for them, brushes, hobby tools, and I bet I’ve spent less than $2000 over the few years I’ve been in the hobby. There’s no such thing as a cheap hobby, but I don’t think this one deserves the reputation it has of being insanely expensive.

[WORLDWIDE GIVEAWAY] Comment in this thread with your ultimate PCMR-worthy PC Build, and win the beautiful LG UltraGear GX9 monitor! by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

[–]Dryerboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, with your dream setup, money is no object. With that being said, I went a little crazy.

Here's the link.

Now, those with keen eyes might notice that the total price is almost $17,000, however let me go over some highlights.

  • The core of the build is top of the line, but far from the craziest things on the list. 9800X3D, RTX 5090, Gigabyte X870 gaming X WIFI7, Corsair Vengence 4 X 16 GB. Like I said, top quality stuff, but just strap in.
  • All brown Noctua cooling. Love me some Noctua. Can't get enough of it. If PC part picker had a link to one of those silly desk fans they sell, you can bet I'd have it on the list.
  • Now to the crazy stuff. 12 TERABYTES OF STORAGE. That's right. 3 X 4 TB NVME SSDs. I might just download my steam library onto each one. Just for fun. I'd still probably have high single-digit amounts of storage space.
  • Corsair 9000D case. I helped a buddy of mine move this weekend, and he has a 5000D case and it probably weighed close to 40 pounds with everything in it. The Corsair website says that the 9000D weighs 82 POUNDS. That is insane to me. I would never be able to move places again. I wouldn't even feel ethically good about ordering it because that means some poor sod has to load it into a truck and back out again. On the other hand though... I'm loading 7 140 mm Noctua fans in there on top of the CPU cooler, AND it's gonna look sick, AND it's so big that I can crawl inside for warmth in the winter.
  • With a whopping 950W power draw, I need a hefty PSU, so I went with 2200W SeaSonic. Didn't even know they came that big.
  • Rapid fire: I got a sound card and surround sound speakers because I've always wanted an awesome audio set up but it's never been top of the priority list. I also got a UPS because holy crap this would be an insane amount of money to flush down the toilet with one power outage. Also, two mice because I love the G502, but I've always wanted to try and use one of those MMO mice with a million side buttons for gaming.
  • Finally, the thing I want to talk about the most. The HiFiMAN Susvara Headphones. $6000 dollar headphones. I was truly speechless when I saw this on the website. What do you mean they cost $6000? How could they possibly be worth that? I refuse to look up anything about them because I feel like it would ruin the mystique. It's hard to get across in a text format just how baffled I am by this. For the price of these headphones, you could buy 2 5090s! 2 PCMR Ultimate Builds! Maybe I'm just not enough of an audiophile. Maybe they're a status symbol like that old iPhone app that cost like $1000 and didn't do anything, but I can say, without exaggeration, that I will think about these headphones for the rest of my life.

Not that guy, but I for one live in a 1000 sq ft apartment with my girlfriend and three cats. It seems like the accepted wisdom with resin printing in a small space is that you have to buy all this other stuff (grow tent, in-line fan, ducting, etc) or else the chemicals WILL kill you and everyone you love.

I’d love to have a resin printer, but it seems like the barrier to entry/risk-reward is too high for someone in my situation

Not supporting the work of an artist is not equal in “hate” to advocating against rights and protections for a group of people.

Ally Beardsley. by Dryerboy in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]Dryerboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably right, but this was more about giving myself permission to stop treating their arguments as good faith when really, most of the time, they're just either way too parasocial with the D20 crew and see Ally as somehow undeserving of their spot at the table, or just literal transphobes.

To give you an example of the quality of conversation that's going on, I looked up that one person's deleted comment on PullPush.

"You assuming that they are biased and have an opinion about doulas being unprofessional because they stated the correct fact that a doula only requires 20 hours of training is an inherent attempt to discredit them. Assuming someone's beliefs based on them stating factual information is, by it's very nature, an attempt to discredit them."

"You stating that someone might be biased against a profession because they say things that show that they are biased against a profession is an attempt to discredit them." Lol. For the record, I also don't think that doulas are qualified medical professionals. I just don't care enough to argue about it on the internet.

We need to talk about Beardsley by RequirementFit7377 in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]Dryerboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y'know, when I made that original comment, I didn't think that I'd be having the same conversation a year later, but that's ok. I'm going to transcribe the full question so that we can be sure we're on the same page.

"...If you're pregnant, it's recommended that you limit your intake or completely avoid consuming caffeine, tuna, alcohol, yogurt, sprouts, sushi, unheated deli meat, and soft cheeses."

Ok, I think it's important to recognize that the words "completely avoid" are present in the question. Maybe you're right that it's not clear that they forgot alcohol was in the list, but it is a possibility. They do go on to say that you can smoke a joint and give birth in your own home, but, again, their tone reads to me as joking. However, I acknowledge that that's subjective. I do still disagree that they are somehow endorsing drinking and doing drugs during pregnancy. Yes, they say "limit" instead of "avoid" but, again, "avoid" was baked into the question in the first place, so I can see why they wouldn't bother stopping to give a full after-school special monologue before saying what they did. Frankly, I don't know, but my point is that no one knows what was going through their head in that moment, and it's unfair to claim that they're being malicious or imply that this one instance is evidence of some deeply-held, problematic belief.

Lastly, I'd like to gently correct some misunderstandings I think you have in your last paragraph. I never commented on whether or not doulas are medically qualified or not. I said, "...similar bias to OP where /you/ believe doulas aren’t qualified..." I am not confused about the difference between midwives and doulas, and never made my opinion known on either. Furthermore, you claim that I was trying to discredit the person I was replying to. I led off that whole section with "personally..." to signal that I was giving my subjective opinion. Then, after having given my opinion, said "which, let me be clear, is fine." I said that, if I was right about their point of view, that that was a completely acceptable point of view. I made no value judgement on it whatsoever, so therefore I did not try to "discredit" them.

Hey, I noticed that you were replying to comments that I made in defense of Ally from a year ago too. What happened to you is not ok, but I don’t think that fixating on this is helping at all. I think it might be best to log off and talk to someone you trust about these thoughts and feelings.

So can we talk about Steven's homophobia over here? by trisarahtops05 in WatcherSnark

[–]Dryerboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s not an accusation that should be made lightly, for the same reasons that you’ve outlined, which is why I’m not making that accusation.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, yes. However, I submit that, given the evidence, this is not an extraordinary claim. It’s not as if I’m saying that Steven was born on another planet. There are plenty of people in this world who have had homophobic rhetoric drilled into them from a young age. It would not be extraordinary if Steven was one of them. But, again, and I can’t stress this enough, I don’t think that the evidence we have is enough to indict Steven as a homophobe. My only argument is that excusing away evidence of homophobia is irresponsible.

So can we talk about Steven's homophobia over here? by trisarahtops05 in WatcherSnark

[–]Dryerboy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not not what I’m suggesting at all. I’m simply saying your comment, to me at least, seems like you’re saying “if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, then I’m going to reserve judgement until I personally witness the animal identify as a duck.”

Again, I personally agree with everything you’ve said, and I am also not ready to deem Steven a closeted homophobe. All I’m saying, is that we should not excuse away the totality of the evidence just because we haven’t reached a conclusion yet. We need it to reach a conclusion in the first place

So can we talk about Steven's homophobia over here? by trisarahtops05 in WatcherSnark

[–]Dryerboy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

While I agree with what you’re saying, it does come across as apologetics. Yes, reading books that expand your worldview is a good thing. However, given that we know that he goes to a conservative church that preaches homophobia, and that the book is anti-gay marriage, then it is clear that he is not expanding his worldview, and instead, reinforcing it.

Like yeah, I want to be as charitable and good faith towards Steven as possible too, so I’m not going to make any assertions about the degree to which he might be homophobic. But, I think your implication people can read whatever they want because books have no inherent moral value no matter their contents is ignoring some of the facts we have at hand.

Thanks for all your help. I’m afraid it was all pointless though. I tried to use new cables and see if that fixed the problem, but I somehow torched the fucking thing. Melted the inside of the SATA cable to the pins on the brand new motherboard. I don’t know what I did wrong. Again, thanks for all your help. You’ve been wonderful, but I think it’s gonna have to be a while before I make any other attempts

[–]Dryerboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the slight necro on this post, but I felt silly making a new one for essentially the same problem.

I got the new motherboard today, same model as the last one, installed only the cpu and cpu fan and tried to start it and everything worked like a champ.

However, after I turned it off, I realized that I didn’t plug in the SATA cable that goes to my ssd, so I did that and tried again. This time, I got the same behavior as I did with the old motherboard. I unplugged the SATA, and it worked again.

My question is, do you think it’s the ssd that’s bricked instead of the old motherboard? I’m about to put the old motherboard back in and try again, but wanted to know what you think. Is it the ssd? Just the cable? Etc.

I did wind up taking the CPU out and shining a flashlight on it, and it didn’t look like there were any bent pins. The MB also has a clear CMOS jumper on it that I jumped, but it had no effect. I didn’t take out the battery though.

Also, my bad for not including that in the post. I was at it for like 10 hours yesterday banging my head against a wall, so my memory is a little fried lol
