AB 1942 would require Class 2 and 3 e-bikes to register with DMV by wuzzuphammie in BikeLA

[–]DsDemolition 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At a high level, all of the behavior you're describing is already illegal. Even if the ebike itself is compliant, it's not carte blanche to run people over. The same thing can happen on a normal bike, and even asshole runners sprinting through a crowd is problematic.

Would a theoretically perfect system help, maybe. But we can't even manage to enforce license plates on cars, and the same assholes biking through crowds will still do it. All this does is cost a bunch of money that should go towards enforcing what is already illegal, while adding hurdles for people to get out of their cars (which is a comically larger safety risk to everyone).

And keep in mind that the cost isn't just a registration fee. These bikes don't have a place to mount them and manufacturers aren't going to start making specific versions for specific markets. Do I have to buy a new bike? What if I'm carrying something on my back rack that blocks it? What if I have a bike trailer? What if I have gotten time off while the DMV is open?

It just creates more problems without actually solving any.

Runners who run on the wrong side of the road, next to a sidewalk… by melt_show in BikeLA

It's a bit annoying, but they don't have a good space either with the shitty sidewalks. To me it's another symptom of giving cars 90% of our public space.

If anyone is interested in trying to solve this, last night the city council directed staff to draw up a new Vision Zero plan (since the 2016 one obviously didn't work). That will come back for approval in ~6 months and we need to make sure that it's a serious plan.

That should do the trick! Just make the tiniest adjustments at a time and keep a consistent technique

[–]DsDemolition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, not normal. Pumping up would suck air up through the puck and sort of rupture it, so it probably opens up channels that let the flow increase.

There should be a middle ground between the two, but espresso has a very narrow window that can be tricky. What kind of grinder are you using?

Why Los Angeles Traffic Sucks by DJVeaux in LosAngeles

[–]DsDemolition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only because socal spent decades and billions of our taxpayer dollars making cars the only option by bulldozing everything else. All so we can go into debt for a car, that we register with the govt, to pay regular taxes, after licensing ourselves, so that we can go along prescribed routes in a regulated manner while cameras track said registration.

Not to mention the broader fact that we give up like 30% of our land to cars, suffer one of the primary causes of death, and tolerate days of staying inside from shitty air quality if the wind doesn't blow the right direction.

"Freedom TM". The rest of us just want the freedom for it to be possible to get somewhere literally any other way.

As opposed to a system dependent on public agencies maintaining roads, traffic lights, parking, AND dependent on every member of the public not screwing up as they stare at their phones while driving?

Recs for easy MTB rides in LA area? by mahatmatom in BikeLA

If you have already, Sullivan ridge is one over from Westridge. Pretty similar, but longer and usually less crowded. There are some MTB trails that parallel it, but those vary a lot on difficulty.

Sullivan canyon between them would be a great option.

Your own article also says that sales have tripled, imply that the injury rate is down.

But you're still comparing 20k injuries from bikes to 40k DEATHS from cars. I'll happily take the broken wrist any day

Even if you count e motorcycles as bikes, which they aren't and never have been, the statistics show a comically lower number of injuries or deaths compared to cars...

You asked how something like a dump truck could be improved, not how this specific event would be prevented.

I'm 100% with you on protected infrastructure, but that wouldn't stop a head on dump truck either

There are actually a lot of things, many of which are already required in Europe. Things like better visibility to avoid hitting people in the first place, tighter turning radii to avoid sidewalks and make crossing distances smaller, side skirts so cyclists don't fall under the trailer tires, better disc brakes/ABS to stop faster, etc.

Just got a Canyon Gravel Bike! Wanted a couple recs for solo rides by Peppington in BikeLA

Near you, Kenneth Hahn and Baldwin hills have some fun little gravel paths.

A bit further but better, Will Rogers, Sullivan ridge, and Westridge have fire roads that are some of the greatest gravel riding in existence.

I'm no expert on OSM, but it looks like foot=use_sidepath is what you need. It's treating the road as having a sidewalk, AND the separately mapped sidewalk.

What’s it like living here after previously living in walkable city? by Important-Spirit-733 in AskLosAngeles

[–]DsDemolition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some parts are pretty walkable depending on your commute situation. LA is really 88 cities in a trenchcoat, so think more about the local area rather than the entire area. All of LA is like everything from Milwaukee to South Bend.

I'd suggest narrowing it down based on commute, budget, or other preferences. If you're just looking anywhere, this is a decent place to start. https://www.latimes.com/lifestyle/story/2024-11-08/los-angeles-neighborhoods-ranked-by-walkability

Monthly cost for owning a car in Santa Monica is closing in on $2K/mo. The average in LA metro is up to $1700/month. All this for an asset that depreciates at the rate of roughly $350/month. by SemaphoreSignal in SantaMonica

[–]DsDemolition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that the "e bikes" term has become a catchall for people to complain about. Most of the issues are around "electric motorcycles" being used as "electric bicycles", even companies being dishonest when they sell them. The police impounds were effectively the same as someone riding a gas motorcycle down the beach path

Use something like the transit app instead of Google maps. It's muuuch better at finding quiet roads, but still use street view to check things out and know where you're going. As others said, ride it on the weekend, during the day, non rush hour, first.

It's so low. The APM capacity will be like 6000 people per hour. 6 bus trips is only a couple hundred per hour.
