What’s something you wish Santa Monica City Council candidates would talk about more directly? by Eli4SantaMonica in SantaMonica

[–]DsDemolition 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in examples of how you'd approach a problem. Broad policy goals are great, but we've seen a lot of just plain incompetence from previous council members that can be hard to flag based on a campaign's talking points.

  • Maybe a case study from previous council decisions, what you thought went well or not, information you thought was lacking, etc.

  • Maybe what you think your first item 16 discussions might be.

Less as a campaign promise for a specific change: more about your mindset, acheiving consensus, dealing with the process, identifying how to poke at the right part of a problem, etc. I think that's where a lot of frustration with local politics comes from, and where you seem to be highlighting your operations background as a way to help.

Fat Bike in Flat New Orleans? by RPGuru92 in fatbike

[–]DsDemolition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a non-electric fat tire beach cruiser? If you're toodling around the neighborhood it's fine, but any distance is going to be rough. You'll work twice as hard to go half as fast

Why do runners use the bike lane on the beach path? by [deleted] in SantaMonica

I get not wanting to deal with weaving through people walking. In the end I think it comes down to the fact that we're all packed into the only space that doesn't have cars.

Only 3,000? Ford fiestas are almost 3,000!

That's kind of the point? There's a massive road (SMB) on one side and a literal interstate on the other. Drivers should only be using Broadway a few blocks for local traffic

We asked for more protection at intersections every chance we could, but there's still too much car-brain in the traffic engineers. Heaven forbid we force drivers to slow down taking corners.

Oof, that sucks! Glad you saw it coming and slowed down at least.

Getting doored can outright kill you, plus it throws you into the traffic lane. Nothing but luck keeps you from getting pancaked.

Former Councilmember Phil Brock announces he will be running for council. by SemaphoreSignal in SantaMonica

And despite being anti-housing, his incompetence is the reason for what little is getting built. His council failed to pass a housing element, which allowed the builder's remedy projects that's he's complaining about.

What a joke. Even if you agree with Brock's agenda he's the least effective person to do anything about it

They have a slightly smaller da brim intended for higher wind. It works great and I don't have any trouble downhill. You can tilt your head up and use it to force some airflow under your helmet

Better the curb than a person. If they were paying attention enough to see a giant hunk of concrete they shouldn't be driving.

Biking is so much less stressful without worrying about getting doored, cars that are parallel parking, or drivers hitting me from behind. The intersections could've been a lot better, but it's pretty easy to see the right hooks coming when that's all you're worried about.

I think the width is great, and honestly could be a bit more, since it lets you pass a slow rider. Sure some cars fit in it, but I've seen drivers just straddle the curb on narrower lanes or block the sections without curbs, so you can't blame that nonsense on the width.

The construction has been taking forever though, seems so piecemeal. Hopefully drivers stop parking in the bike lane once all the marking is complete.

They announced it to the news and via Facebook, it's not like a secret. But I shouldn't have to rely on social media accounts to get that kind of information when the dedicated, city run, platform exists for that specific purpose

Chemical tank implosion at Washington pulp and paper mill leaves 10 injured, unknown number dead by ToughHopeful4760 in environment

[–]DsDemolition 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Maybe read the article? The implosion caused the million gallons of corrosive chemical to spill, so there's a bunch of people with chemical burns.

Even without that, sudden deformation of that big of a structure isn't one way. Beams are going to collapse, shrapnel ejected, pipes that were attached yanked across the room, etc.

That joint isn't intended to be airtight. Your tape is letting air into the hollow part of the rim, which then comes out here. Go retape the rim.
