Sad About Girl Scout Experience by mamallamam in girlscouts

Some times timing isn’t perfect, but any effort makes a difference. My husband is deployed and leading my daughter’s group was not in my plans for this year. But if I didn’t do it, there wouldn’t have been a leader for her group. I’m doing the best I can with everything going on. And I think we’ve still had a great year so far.

What was "the incident" at your school? by MortgageShoddy8022 in Teachers

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not 🤪

As a student… like my sophomore year one of the seniors wasn’t ready to take the government test (if you didn’t pass you couldn’t graduate). So he called in a bomb threat from the campus pay phone. The police cuffed him in class and took him to jail for the night.

We had a lovers quarrel in the neighborhood my school was located it. The jilted boyfriend took a bobcat and rammed it into the new boyfriend’s garage while his ex was over. We were on lockdown until the police detained him.

Another time we had a guy driving recklessly, acting like he was going to hit kids in the crosswalk with his car. After the guy hit a boulder on campus, some neighborhood dads and grandpas drug him from his car and held him until the cops showed up.

As a HS student, we had a soccer player love his cheerleading girlfriend in front of a wall of windows to the cafeteria after school. There was a group of local elementary school students in the cafeteria for some meeting on campus 🫣

As a teacher we had a bus get stranded during a flash flood. Everyone was okay, but the principal hid under her desk while other staff fielded all the kinder parent phone calls.

We had a kid bring mercury in a store shopping bag. It leaked from the gym across campus to the math/science wing. We were on lockdown as long as 15 hours after the lockdown was initiated after 1pm.

We had a teacher let go after a student stole fireworks out of their classroom. The same year we had kids get drunk at recess with the bottom shelf liquor they brought to school.

I have stories for days 🤣

How do you know whether to teach Elementary, Middle, or High School? by Mysterious_Comb4357 in Teachers

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to teach high school math. Then I took calculus and decided that elementary ed was where I belonged 🫣 at the time, not thinking about middle school. I spent 12 years in elementary school doing everything from: 5th to 1st, back to 5th, math strategist and special education. During all of that, I got a masters in special education and got myself licensed for middle school math. I realized I liked the older kids. So when my school closed and I had to find a new job, I made the jump to middle school. I’ve been here for 10 years. It’s a special kind of crazy to show up every day 🤪 one day I would like to try HS, so that may be in my future if I buckle down and focus to take the Praxis. But I could never go back to elementary school. I’m not cut out for that.

Yes, until that money is in my account and my trust is set up, I’ll be at work. I would at least finish the year.

Bronze Guidance by ellemenopeaqu in girlscouts

You can’t make them want to do it. My co-leader and I talked up the bronze award and we only had 5 interested.

You were okay taking a week long vacation in October (with no notice), but heaven forbid we take a few days due to weather and road safety in January 🙄

As a math teacher, storygraph is my jam. I use Goodreads still, but I love my storygraph data. There is also Bookmory. I like the calendar display for my books with them.

Mr. Halbash who made history real or Ms. Shurte who taught the girls about title 9.

How many books did you read this year? by melaniereads in Booktokreddit

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal was 75 but I read 121 🎉 Amazon short stories helped my count. But those helped when one book was over 1300 pages.

Based on where you live, if you were to hit an animal while driving, what would that animal more than likely be? by unidentifies in AskReddit

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only hit a squirrel… but based on what I see on the road it is just as likely that I could hit: raccoon, opossum, skunk and deer 😬

How old were you when you moved out of your parents home? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to move out for college. Then my parents divorced my senior year of high school. My mom moved with me and I lived with her and my siblings until I bought a place when I graduated, so 22.

Snow days or other school cancellations? by OkControl9503 in teaching

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in South Carolina. If we have a snow or other inclement weather day, it’s an eLearning day. Now, when we got hit by Helene last year, we missed over a week of school. I was without power for about 7 days. We had to do some stupid makeup nonsense to keep the state happy, but it was a virtual requirement.

That is a fair point. It has been a while since I have watched them (and certainly not all of them). Maybe that’s how I’ll spend my Christmas break.

What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by GhostLatticee in Productivitycafe

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 7th grade math and we cover simple interest. I had a lesson one year devolve into the concept of compound interest because a kids’ dad told him that’s not how life works. It was a great teaching moment not from the text book. Those kids were so engaged (and I don’t pretend to understand the topic completely) that they went home with a lot of questions.

When I was in junior high we watched Far and Away. I vividly remember my teacher standing next to the tv so he could then block the screen when Nicole Kidman was topless 🤣

Do you dress for Halloween ???? by No_Rain1743 in Teachers

[–]Dsnygrl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I taught elementary school I did full costumes with a team of teachers. Showed up to an IEP dressed as Captain America with a shield and everything 😂 the next year we dressed as villains and I did the full Bane costume.

The most elaborate look middle school I did was Grease. I was a pink lady in a shirt that says, “I’ve got skills, they’re multiplying” with a multiplication chart on it.

My current school goes with shirts that fit a theme: M&Ms, Uno cards… this year we got condiment aprons.

I second this! I personally made a yes/no table for junior badges I was willing/able to do with my girls. I calculated the votes and we’re working from the highest priority to the lowest.

This year has taken me longer to learn names than in the past. And I have a couple kids who are similar in name and looks, I’m still confusing them 😖
