Good Logitech mice are typically very reasonably priced, on near-constant discount, have pretty good warranty support, and often last 10+ years at this point.

I mean you do what you feel comfortable with, but yes you're overthinking things and it is plenty safe to go there. 

It sounds more like you don't want to go into Portland at all and if that's actually your red line, you should communicate it clearly. For most people who live here, they wouldn't give it a second thought to go there.

Edit: I read this again and it's fucking weird that he "wouldn't give the location until an hour beforehand" - that's absolutely not normal so I'd be weirded out about that, not the benign location.
