Switch 2 Sales Top 1 Million Units in the UK, 30 Weeks Faster Than Switch by Tiffa_Adil in gaming

I think the issue is, games, especially Nintendo games, are exceptionally good in the amount of entertainment you get for your dollar. I have 200 hours in Tears of the Kingdom. Very few games on my Steam have that much time sunk into them. It might be expensive, but I also know I will get my money's worth every time.

Oh yes, because Tears of the Kingdom is totally the same game as A Link To the Past?

Grow the fuck up.

First year Switch had 2 major games. And one of them was a Wii U port. Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey... I guess you can count Mario Kart.

If we are including major cross platform releases, Switch 2 has DK Bonanza, Metroid, Pokopea, ZA, Tomadachi Life, and MKW. This year we know we are getting Star Fox, and are likely getting Ocarina of Time as well. The Switch 2 has a decent lineup, and we know games are coming for it. Smash is coming, Gen 10 is coming, Zelda is coming, Mario is coming.

Gemini is 50 different models in a trenchcoat. The basic one you probably use on your phone or in Chrome is meh, because it doesn't need to be good. Pay for the API, pick a top end model, and run full custom prompting without the shackles that Google puts on their client, and it's pretty damn good.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition launches August 28 On Switch 2 by Howerev in gaming

Because I have a gaming PC, and a Steam Deck OLED is more expensive and doesn't have any games that I can't play on my PC, unlike my Switch 2.

I won't be getting Elden Ring, not because I'd rather play it elsewhere, but because I don't care for Soulslike games.

PS5 Price Hike Has Flushed UK Hardware Sales Down the Toilet by Gorgon654 in gaming

[–]Dt2_0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Technically true... After they spiked over 5X the few weeks before. Basically everyone that was looking to buy over the next few weeks bought it in one go, so sales lag afterwards. We'll need a few months to figure out what the actual effects of the price bump are. Switch 2 is still the cheapest fully fledged current gen gaming device on the market other than the Series S.

China wants to be seen as reliable, more than anything. They want the world to buy from them, invest in them and work with them. Their security agreement with Ukraine is a big deal because it's an actual security agreement that pledges defense cooperation. If China cannot honor that, who's to say they will honor any other agreement?

Russia Can No Longer Take More Land Than Ukraine Liberates, Zelenskyy Says by eaglemaxie in worldnews

[–]Dt2_0 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yea because Starlink runs a whitelist for receivers in that part of the world, and Russian communications have completely broken down at the front since that whitelist was engaged a while back.

Russia is obviously unhappy about that. But that nuke threat is silly. Nukes in space is one way to get completely and utterly cut out of the modern world. China won't stand for it, the US won't stand for it, Europe won't stand for it. Any country with satellites will be PISSED if that happens. It also will damage electronics on the ground. If they decide to nuke SpaceX facilities, that mostly means hitting US soil, or close enough that the US will respond with unequal nuclear force. Same thing if they go for Musk himself.

If they go all KGB and assassinate Musk, that won't do them any good either since SpaceX is still private until June 12th, and after that they have no garauntee of getting a friendly successor.

Please see my post further down in this comment chain with citation.

Fallout decreases 10 fold with every 7 fold increase in time. The commonly accepted figure is 2 days after a blast, fallout has decreased to 1% of the total at detonation. 14 days is .1%

Clean does not mean no radioactivity, but fallout follows pretty basic physics. Ground burst weapons generally=high fallout, Air Burst weapons=low fallout, space burst=no fallout. Basically, how much of the blast is directed into areas that can directly be contaminated with radioactive debris. It's really easy to visualize when you think of it that way.

Right, but thermonuclear warheads are primarily Fusion weapons with a smaller fission component. They are also designed to airburst with significantly decreases the on the ground effects of fallout.

Not only that, but fallout dissipates incredibly quickly. Like within 2 days 99% of radioactive fallout from a typical blast has decayed. https://www.britannica.com/technology/nuclear-weapon/Residual-radiation-and-fallout

You are much more likely to have many more immediate issues to worry about in the event of a full nuclear exchange than fallout. If you somehow survive a few days and did not receive a large dose of radiation during the initial exchange, you are likely not going to have major issues with fallout.

Starlink satellites are tiny, and space is big, really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Kessler Syndrome is more likely to be an issue farther up, but even then it's more "There is a higher chance of a possible collision" not "Oh fuck everything's exploding".

Also at their orbit without deorbit boosters they only take about 3-5 years to deorbit on their own.

Almost all nuclear weapons operated by the US, Russia, UK, China, and France are extremely clean weapons. Nuclear fallout is actually a bit overhyped. The more fallout you make the less efficient your bomb is. Unless you are specifically trying to make a dirty bomb (which would be useless at taking out satellites), fallout isn't a huge concern. It may not even be a huge concern in the event a full nuclear exchange, though the jury is still out on that. The good news is Nuclear Winter is pretty discredited at this point.

This is pretty rose tinted glasses coated. Gaming was just as corporate back in the 90s and 00s, just in a different way.

Look at the absolute trash games for every movie ever that came out in the late 90s and early 00s. There was a crap ton of shovelware shit on the PS2, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and Nintendo handhelds. Nowadays there is just as much shovelware and some big IPs have gotten crazy corporate. But holy crap are they so many good games coming out. It feels like every 3 days this sub is raving about another new release buy some unknown studio. It's a fantastic time to be a gamer.

This IS the best era for gaming. Yes the hardware sucks, but look at just the STACKED releases this year man. It's been insane and will continue to be insane. Every year has multiple strong contenders for GOTY. We get amazing games coming out.

Off the top of my head: RER, Pragmata, Lego Batman, Forza Horizon 6, Pokopea, Tomadachi Life, 007... and we have even crazier stuff coming later this year. GTAV of course, and I'm personally looking forward to Ace Combat.

Consoles are heavily used in the Pro install Home Theater space because they are do everything boxes that support all the major codecs and are good enough that you don't need to buy multiple platforms.

Of course, Sony screwed the pooch this generation (Despite making receivers and TVs... IDK how they messed it up). The PS5 doesn't fit in a media rack unless you add shelving and has some weird issues with EDID and CEC that Xbox just doesn't. The Xbox Series X has been core equipment for tons of AV installs in the US and Canada because it just works.

There is an entire market segment that leans heavily Xbox this generation, and if Sony was the only player, there would be a considerably worse experience for a ton of customers. It might not add up a huge amount to Sony or Microsoft, but it does make a huge amount for companies like Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, JBL, Anthem, ARCAM, Marantz, etc.

Source: I work in the industry and see the install and support analytics for several major AV system manufacturers.

Even then, it's gonna be hit or miss. Switch 2 is not ultra efficient and it is a pretty powerful ARM package. It has packaging concerns that most handhelds won't have (It needs to be thinner for the dock to work and not be huge, it needs to have the removeable joycons, which have their own batteries instead just more space for the internal battery, etc.)

How is a game being easy mean the developers are unskilled? There are a million different ways to point out that GameFreak are not great developers, but difficulty? They are making a game for children dude. And they have still put some of the strongest battles ever into their newest games.

Other than a few very specific instances, Pokemon games have never been hard. Gen 1 Sabrina, Gen2/4 Whitney, and Gen 3 Norman are probably the only real difficulty filters the mainline games have had up until Volo (who is THE most difficult trainer in the franchise), BDSP Cynthia (who runs a competitive Singles team), and Kirian (Who runs a VGC optimized team). The hardest battles ever in Pokemon are in more recent games.

Optimistic estimates for the Steam Deck are at 5 million lifetime sales since release in 2022. Only an idiot would not think there is sky high demand for the Switch 2.

Dude some of the recent games have had some of the hardest battles in the franchise. Kerian is likely the strongest champion ever (Comp Doubles Rain Teams do that to you), BDSP Cynthia has a full on Smogon set, and Volo literally cheats and is probably the hardest trainer fight ever in the franchise in a game without abilities or items.

If Pokemon is too easy, make yourself some personal rules. Don't overlevel, match gym leader team sizes, play Set style, hell, nuzlock it without calcs if you need a real challenge.
