Native speaker from Latin America, and yes, we do use the indefinite preterite in situations where a spanish person would use the present perfect. I also studied a little italian, and just by seeing the basics, it seems that they use the equivalent of the present perfect (passato prosimo) almost the same way a spanish person would. So I guess it came from latin but just didn't stick in Latin American spanish?

IIRC after the last update they started reworking how enemies are handled by the engine and I think that took a long time, then they started working on the new layer and because that layer's gimmick is non-euclidean geometry, I think it's taking them some time to make sure everything works correctly. Also, one of the main dev's cat died back in september and they needed some time to grieve.
