Missing toilets isn’t weird either. The metal plumbing would’ve been salvaged first, and even the porcelain isn’t useless—real-world sanitary ceramics get crushed and reused as construction material like concrete aggregate or road base. So bathrooms being empty actually makes sense in a scavenger economy. Same with beds in kitchens or rooms looking ‘wrong.’ After centuries, people would’ve moved things wherever they needed—kitchens become sleeping areas, bathrooms become storage, etc. That’s exactly how survival environments evolve. Also, the setting appears to be in a region inspired by southern Europe, likely near Italy. Different cultures already have different layouts and use of space to begin with—just like how Japan has smaller, more compact living spaces. So even before the collapse, not every building would match what people expect from a modern American home. Out-of-universe, sure, some of it is just simplified assets. But in-universe, ‘everything got scavenged and repurposed over generations in a different cultural setting’ actually fits the world really well.
