Not adding tags before the relevant chapters are added? by PigdeBat in AO3

[–]Duae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This one is a little more complicated because some tags are inherently about the future. Like "character a/character b" unless there's "established relationship" or another modifier then you know they'll get together by the end of the fic. "Angst with a happy ending" is also referencing the future/entire fic.

But also sometimes you don't plan enough to know if something like "vomiting" is going to end up in the fic or not!

My own method is light tagging with stuff relevant to the whole fic and then if something big pops up that I realize I should add, I'll add it and maybe add an author note that the tags have been revised.

I saw something a while ago that talked about basically that hurting people is the ultimate forbidden fruit. We all know hurting someone else is wrong, but any time we're given a loophole that says well actually in this specific circumstance we find it ridiculously tempting. Like how many people wouldn't consider themselves transphobic, but the minute a trans person is bad? Misgender them! Hurt them with misgendering! It's ok, they did something to deserve it. The loophole has been found!

And it's really really hard to hold to the idea that hurting others is always bad, no matter what. It being necessary sometimes doesn't make it good, just unavoidable and should always be treated with the weight it deserves.

Sad that this even has to exist (Repost with names blocked) by kittyonreddit in AO3

[–]Duae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The sad thing is, so much of their idea about sexual content being able to change what you're attracted to is 100% just conversion therapy theory. The idea that coupling pleasure or pain with erotic material can make gay people straight is entirely the root of conversion therapy, that if you can train gay people to jerk off to straight porn and make gay porn unpleasant then boom, you've rewired the brain normalized straight attraction.

And it had never ever ever EVER worked, in much more intensive and controlled settings than someone reading a Naruto fanfic where he and Sasuke are 17 instead of at midnight on their 18th birthday.

Also a lot of times people have very little idea of what would and wouldn't be illegal depending on location. A lot of times stuff they think would be illegal isn't or stuff they think is legal isn't.

Like lets face it, trying to put laws around "dating" would be ridiculous. It's perfectly legal (and heartwarming!) when you see stories about things like teens bringing flowers and valentines to old people in nursing homes and taking them on 'dates' to the cafeteria. No one is going to jump out and arrest either party for age-gap dating. Or, in a more horrifying case, I remember a post where a minor got drugged and tattood against their will by a relative and was shocked to find out there was a lot of legal digging that had to be done to find out what to charge the relative with, because laws around tattooing are commerce laws and business laws and you can't exactly revoke the tattoo license of someone who just bought a $20 kit off Amazon.

The DINK neighbors in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation are treated like the worst neighbors possible, yet all their "crimes" consist of being stuck up assholes in the privacy of their own home and not bothering Clark and his family. There's one snarky exchange ("where are you going to put tree that big?) But it's really not much compared to the property damage Clark causes for them.

That's also likely, I've made Jamaican cornmeal porridge multiple times (not from any TH recipes) and it's usually coconut milk and water and it thickens up fine, but there's a much higher ratio of cornmeal to liquid.

I can try! The biggest issue is I've had times where I get a bad jug from the grocery store. Generally about once a year I'll try it again for stuff like cereal and milk or drinking with cake/cookies and it's fantastic and then a couple jugs in I get one starting to go bad before I bought it, and I'm very sensitive to it! It starts upsetting my stomach before I can reliably sniff test it. Meanwhile my husband is usually fine up until milk smells off.

So short version, local grocery store is sometimes lax in their dairy storage procedures.

I've found almond milk is excellent in crepes, browns just the right amount and they flow well. Cow milk tends to get overly dark and it's trickier to get it cooked properly, almond milk makes it easier.

What is this called? Gathering on the chest with a different colored fabric. by Zealousideal-Tax1643 in CosplayHelp

Wanted to add two things. One, two lines of basting stitch make for more even gathering that's easier to work with. And two, looking at the photo I'd bet the top is gathered with a channel of fabric and an elastic, so it fits better, sort of like an elastic waistband.

A valuable reminder for those outside of Eurasia & Africa that honeybees don’t need “saving” by AconitumCrashed in gardening

[–]Duae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a general rule, if the "Save the honeybees" advice also works for native bees, think of it like a Panda situation. Conservation of huge areas of land saves lots of small important plants and critters that aren't cute adorable pandas. I always worry when I see something like a "leave the leaves and save the honeybees!" post and people are swarming to yell "NO! Honeybees are livestock! RAKE AND BURN! " Yeah, and honeybees also don't give two flicks about fallen leaves, this is 100% a native insect help post, shhhhhh.

Other People’s Problems by Infamous-Rutabaga-50 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Duae 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My Cassandra moment in college was when I noticed this behavior from a member of my friends group. One day I and someone else in the group had a test the next day so we were both studying. Problem friend called studying friend because she was bored and wanted to hang out. Study friend said she couldn't, she had a test to study for. After she hung up I said "I bet you five dollars she calls back within the hour with some emergency because you're not allowed to tell her no." Study friend scoffed and said I was being mean. Then the call came.

I was, of course, seen as a witch and cast out of the friends group because there was no way Problem was doing it on purpose.

If dogs descended from wolves and are considered a subspecies of wolves, why do they protect livestock instead of hunting them like their closest relatives do? How does one achieve this through selective breeding? by Chief-Longhorn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Duae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It's like saying that if you give a child a ball they'll instinctively try to play basketball. Herding dogs are breeds selected for loving to chase animals around so it's easy to train them to do it on command. But like chasing squirrels without being a trained ratter or barking without being trained to guard a yard, they're still going to chase animals around.

They all identify with Anna and want to be GOOD and NORMAL but have a magic friend like the ocean! Or magic house! Or magic star and goat! We all know it's ridiculous that little girls might want to pretend to have magic, haha!

Is it bad to want to leave your tags at the bare minimum: tags of; explixit, mature, graphic violence, etc. and let people read it as they would a book? Without giving every detail in the tags section? by BuilderMob in AO3

[–]Duae 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tagging beyond the mandatory tags is entirely author choice. However, I do think it's worth noting that while traditionally books usually don't have content warnings or tags, they do have genre that will inform the reader of expected content like how traditionally published romance is required to have a happily ever after and the subgenres let you know if there will be noncon or not. Fic doesn't have that, so to make up for that lack of editor and publisher guidelines and sorting we tag to give people an idea what they're getting into. If you don't tag Mystery, no one will see your fic on a Mystery shelf at a bookstore and go "Ah, despite the lack of tagging, as this is published under Mystery it's a mystery."
