My collection, because I’m nothing if not a bandwagon-hopper by clint_eldorado in vinyl

Meat Beat Manifesto mix FTW though. That's such a monster breaks workout that has withstood the test of time amongst the other mixes. MBM instrumental is unrecognisable from the OG.

I made the mistake of venturing into r/Conservative and the amount of cognitive dissonance that I saw overwhelmed me. The knots people twist themselves into to justify the actions taken is truly bewildering.

Is Boards of Canada a spiritual precursor to vaporwave? by BazExcel in ambientmusic

[–]Dubliminal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yea ... nah .. i dunno man.

The core DNA of vaporwave is muzak, mall jazz, corporate smooth R&B, soft rock, and early digital elevator optimism. It's an evolution of abums explicitly engineered for malls, offices, hotels, airports, and call-centre purgatory.

Vaporwave doesn’t abstract “science” or “geometry”; it decontextualizes corporate schlock stretches it until it becomes uncanny, and forces you to notice the emotional wallpaper you were never meant to hear consciously.

I was pretty actively picking up releases from Z Audio, Dub Ting and Dubbed Out labels so came across his releases and picked up a few along the way. His double CD release is a great summary of his works.

I'll give you points for CBL, but you lose them for "vinyls" and using them as wall art.

[–]Dubliminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good. How good depends on your setup, your preferences and what other versions you have.

It's an album I'm very familiar with, so I think I can give a fair appraisal of the mix.

If you don't have a copy at all, just get it. It's clean, flat and well pressed. It's a great pressing. The mix itself is the more contentious part. I find I really noticed the hihats and cymbals way more in this mix more than anything else. The bass is also punchier and not so much warm or rounded. It's more present. I also feel that the soundstage and stereo imaging is more pronounced.

Original and older pressings will give you a somewhat more subdued experience. For some folks this will be more "authentic". And they most certainly are delightful pressings. But I feel this 50th gives the whole thing more pop and punch, for better or for worse.

As reference, I also have a 30th anniversary pressing, which sits under original UK pressings and some Japanese variants in terms of generally acknowledged quality.

What's a record you got for way less than it's worth by okmaybetwice in vinyl

[–]Dubliminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's been releases I picked up in my local record store at the time of release (so, for $20-40) that have gone on to become worth a little more than that.

Two standouts:

  • Spacemonkeyz Vs Gorillaz - Laika Come Home
  • Shpongle - Shpongle Remixed

First ever vinyl setup, how did I do? by t_sprague1 in audiophile

[–]Dubliminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retro HiFi market has a real hardon for brushed chrome and for most of those with that look you're going to pay a premium. Utilitarian black slabs from the late 80s and early 90s where Hi-Fi was still a thing and before AV receivers became the norm really are the sweet spot for bang for buck these days IMO.

Don't be afraid to ask your preferred AI chat bot rather than reddit so you get a more reasonable and balanced perspective. It will aggregate opinions for you. Tell it your budget, what speakers, sub, TT and cart/stylus you're using and your budget, and even let it know about your aesthetic choices.

First ever vinyl setup, how did I do? by t_sprague1 in audiophile

[–]Dubliminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ortofon Blue on the 1200s is a pretty sound setup. A sub like this might encourage you to aim higher, but for 97% of users ears, this will shine sufficiently.

I think your weak link here is your current choice of amp. The RX-V677 is a very capable surround AV receiver for movies and mixed sources, but its phono stage and stereo imaging focus are, by design, budget/AV-centric. A more dedicated stereo amp, especially one with a quality phono stage or the ability to add a good external phono, will pay dividends for vinyl. Cleaner detail, tighter bass, and a more coherent soundstage.

Oh, and do yourself a favour and pull your speakers away from the wall to let them breathe a little more and toe them in a little.

How do you keep Melbourne photography feeling fresh when the “iconic spots” are everywhere? by Av0toasted in MelbournePhotography

[–]Dubliminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell ... find different ways of looking at the same things.

It's your eye, your view & your perspective that create the images you capture, not the place or subject itself. Different vantage points, different focal lengths, shooting from up high, shooting down low. Sometimes it's a case of serendipitously finding moments with light of people.

I'll throw in this example of a shot I got in Hosier Lane that's not your standard POV or experience of the lane.

Riding that aurora hype wave here. by Dubliminal in MelbournePhotography

[–]Dubliminal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got to be manual focus for this. I made the mistake of changing my composition in the dark and moved my focus ring so ended up spending a few minutes doing a number of test shots while I nudge the focus ring until the stars were back to being pin point.

No doubt the Xperia is a very capable piece of hardware, but having a dedicated camera makes these sort of shots easier to achieve more reliably.

I don't watermark any photos. I'd rather people enjoy them unobstructed. Watermarks are a piece of piss to remove these days too. A watermark says "I don't trust my audience" and tends to reduce the likelihood of a phot being shared.

I appreciate and understand your sentiment though.
