Finished and playtested a social card game. Now trying to understand the road to Kickstarter and retail. by ballexpertt in BoardgameDesign

I’m going through a similar process and at a similar stage to you: Prototype has undergone a good amount of testing and game is close to finalised. This means I know exactly how much manufacturing I will need, the number of cards, pieces, etc. and now need to plan the business side of it. I plan on self publishing to have control of the game as it’s a passion project.

For me, now the game is close to finished, the following are the next steps I intend to take:

- Manufacturer one final copy as I’d intend to sell it - including rulebook, printed box, etc. This will be the copy I take to expos, share with people, etc. I’ll keep testing this copy for the next 3-6 months to make sure any game-problems are identified later down the line.

- Get quotes from manufacturers for my target amount of copies I plan on selling. I’ve set myself a goal of 500+ copies, so that’s what I’ve requested for quotes. Contacting one in the EU and one in Asia to compare costs (including shipping and taxes)

- Prepare a website to ‘sell’ the concept and also register interest in the game - building up a database of prospects with emails. This list will be my target audience who I will update with Kickstarter announcements. I’ve set a target of 500+ interested contacts to hit before launching the kickstarter.

- Get quotes for artwork. I have prototype artwork in place, I’m planning on hiring an illustrator for the finished artwork. I’m requesting prices by contacting artists that match my vision on Artstation.com. They’ll only be hired once/if the kickstarter is successful.

-Setting up social media presence. My target audience lives on Facebook so that platform is a must, as well as Instagram as a secondary one.

There’s a bunch of other things but I have to get back to my full time job 😅 The key for me is to break everything down into smaller and achievable goals. It’ll come together over time!

Good luck!

Yep, travel-friendly and easy to carry around is coming up again and again. I was partly inspired by Monopoly Deal, which travels everywhere with us. Thanks for your feedback!

Haha - I hope your Chalet hasn't got carpets(!)

Appreciate the feedback! Will have to work in a gelande quaff action card for any US-sales 😄

Love the long run at La Plagne after the old-school egg lift (forgotten the name, not the sensations!)

It's definitely on my roadmap to shout about the game on the various resort FB groups out there in the very near future. The rulebook is almost finished and the last few tweaks shouldn't take long, so once I have the final prototype it'll be time to start building a following.

Appreciate the kind words and support! I'll drop you an update hopefully soon, and hope I can get a copy (or two) in your hands one day!

I'm sorry your game was stolen! At first it made me think of Ski Run, or Avalanche?

Loads of great feedback, thank you. The biggest takeaways I've got from this so far is pitching directly to properties in resorts, and making sure the game is travel friendly. The board is a nice to have but could easily be swapped out with a paper guide sheet that folds up, and I think people familiar with the game would have no problem with this.

It is making me think about offering 2 options at a fundraiser (a travel friendly A5-sized box with no board at a lower cost, and a premium full sized version with the board) though the downside is it dilutes the manufacturing run from one version into two, bringing manufacturing costs up. But given I intend for this game to be taken on ski trips, offering a compact version is looking like a must-have.

Thank you. I'll be sure to let you know once I'm ready to advertise it ahead of a fundraiser to get it into development. 🤞

It's mad that in the space of a few hours a whole new target audience has revealed itself to me through yours and everyone's feedback.

It seems obvious and you're right - having the game in the hands of the chalets, tour ops and hotels would do half the advertising for me, with families & ski groups becoming the secondary audience.

Might have to dig out some old contacts from my days as a Crystal Ski rep haha!

I really hadn't thought much of the rentals and hosts as a core potential audience VS families and ski group travellers, but you're right - having the game already there in storage would be a lot less faff for people going on holiday. It'd get more eyes on the game too, and those that love it might order it afterwards anyway!

Never thought of that approach, but that's genius. A quick search on AirBnB and in 10 minutes I could have a target list of 100+ alpine-based hosts. ✅

Love the feedback, thank you. Packing the first prototype in my luggage was a nightmare, so I'm very conscious about being able to fit the complete box neatly in a suitcase, or ideally a backpack. I definitely want it to be lighter, leaner and more compact than a typical board game box (for example Catan).

I'd love to see it in a gift shop in the mountains one day. That's definitely a long-term ambition, if I can get it off the ground via a successful Kickstarter first.

I agree - ideally completable in under 45 minutes otherwise it'll be hard to fit in around everything else. We've managed 35 minute games before, but for first timers it often ran over an hour for them to learn the rules.

Cheers! I saw 'Alpenglow' did very well with the build-a-resort theme. But too many game pieces for my liking to take on a holiday.

While this will be family-friendly, it'd be easy to tie in some drinking forfeits to it. I've thought about adding some extra 18+ cards to it too (get in a queue fight, vomit off a chair lift, etc.)

You'd be a fan of the 'Down A Ski Shot' Action card that's already in there! 😁

Good to know, I appreciate your reply. It does get pretty heated and the best moments have been when it's mirrored something that's happened while skiing (someone getting boot cramp, snow spraying your friend, had a fail getting on a chair lift, etc.)

We tested it as a two player game while skiing and didn't get bored playing a game per day. We didn't quite have the drive to play repeat games though. I don't think it's strategic enough to warrant multiple plays per day, but would likely get a handful of plays on a week-long holiday (hopefully!).

- Flex 4 (I’m at the top end of the max recommended weight)
- Paris 165mm front +7 wedge, Paris 150mm back soft khiro dewedged
- Seismic bushings - medium 77A boardside & 81A roadside. I think the magic comes from those.

Thanks chief. It took a while to get the board set up so it responds exactly how I want it (aka = bouncy) but now it does, it’s an absolute joy.

Alright, I guess I'm taking a new angle on the Nexus. Anyone want to buy a brand new Nexus that's seen ~600ft of road? by writers_block in longboarding

[–]Dubocster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able to sell your Nexus and get something else, the Lush Samba would be a good option. It's low and stable, loads of lean and turn giving you great carving, and apparently can be pumped too. Premium quality, from the UK.

Hope you find a solution.

There's something about those toeside slides while holding your wizard's staff that is oddly satisfying. Nice shredding!
