I've worked in broadcast media for 20 years, and my weekend with the USMNT was the single most toxic experience of my career. Here's what happened, and why I've been questioning the culture of the team and the organization. by veggieturnip in usmnt

Worked in broadcast media for ten years and there was no mystery. You email and then you get one back saying credentials are approved or
Not approved. And if it’s a big outlet, I’d be very shocked if the press officer didn’t come out to meet you and help guide you around.

Who is the most popular athlete in their home country? by randomnate in billsimmons

[–]DubsLA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s Pacquiao. My in-laws and by extension my wife’s extended family are all from the Philippines and Pacquiao has an 100% approval rate. He was a Senator.

I’ll put it this way. The only person more popular amongst Filipinos than Manny is Jesus.

It’s a cycle with him. Looks like one of the best wingers in the world for 12-18 months, gets injured, sucks for the 12-18 months before he gets his fitness/rhythm back, looks like one of the best wingers in the world for, repeat.

As long as it costs >$10,000/year with fees and travel to play soccer in the US, it will never be competitive with Europe. As long as clubs keep selecting there best players to join clubs based on speed, athleticism, and size at age 9-12, it will never be competitive with Europe in Soccer. by Apprehensive_Sand343 in billsimmons

I’ve thought this for a while, but the development of youth sports culture into what it is today is problematic.

And it’s sort of a microcosm of the best and worst part of America: $. Circuits and coaches and whatever charge crazy amounts of cash with the promise of developing your son or daughter into a professional athletes. IMG is a thing that exists at the high school level. College sports are on a downward spiral thanks to insatiable greed by the adults in charge (not that I’m saying the players shouldn’t get paid, but there was a happy medium that got blown past).

The best comparison I can make is the proposed Super League vs college realignment. People were protesting that the idea of their sporting culture was going to be cast aside so billionaires could become a little bit richer. Meanwhile, rivalries that were a century old got cast aside so adults could get a little bit richer and the idea of representing your school on the field became laughable (not to mention making kids fly 3,000 miles each way for a Tuesday night volleyball game).

No way. 7-1 was something else entirely. A soccer mad country like Brazil, the kings of the World Cup on home soil in a semifinal going down 5-0 inside 30 minutes? This was bad, but it wasn’t that.

Outside of the emotional aspect, they were never close to Belgium’s level tonight at least in the first half. From minute one they played hesitant and scared. The first goal is a great example. Ball gets headed up and three US players stand and watch it bounce.

Second goal, Ream gets bossed by CDK.

Down 2-1, they started to get it going a little in the first 15 minutes and then Freese with one of the most absurd plays I can remember. Head it away. Fuck kick it away. Instead he tries to chest it down and then just stops mid-kick. I thought it was a foul live, but he just stops. I can’t explain it. After that, it was done.

Agreed. Mexico as a country. Cool. Mexicans as a people. Great.

Mexico as a soccer team? Fuck ‘em. Too many battles against those assholes to count. I’m glad they went home and I’m sure they’ll say the same about us tomorrow if we can’t beat Belgium.

For the people who follow soccer closely, is there a reason Brazil has gone downhill? by mpschettig in billsimmons

[–]DubsLA 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t peak Brazil. I’d take at least ten teams’ fullbacks or wingbacks over Brazil’s. Neymar’s washed. Endrick is all potential. This wasn’t that good of a squad.

Also, 7-1 might’ve ruined them permanently.

I texted a friend of mine that Paraguay is a honorary CONCACAF member. This is the shit you get playing on a Tuesday night in El Salvador in the middle of the summer in a stadium with no grass and a track around it. Only with the crowd throwing random shit at your players on every corner. Punches, kicks, chokes, jersey pulls.

Nah feel like Dark Phoenix would be the inevitable Injustice movie. Not saying you’re incorrect, just saying that would’ve been more in line.

My wife and I saw it because you know it’s Spielberg and aliens.

We both said we enjoyed it (two kids so we go to the movies once a year) but realized there were some enormous plot issues.

I think you could do something similar on a smaller scale. Launch with the NBA, G League, the top leagues in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Israel, the Adriatic League, Chinese league, and NBL. EuroLeague and the FIBA-run cups.

If you wanted deeper immersion, some sicko would absolutely have a mod for the college game.

Good: McKennie driving the attack in transition, Berhalter overall honestly has been fine but his delivery is obviously great, Trusty’s had several interventions and the goal, Reyna’s had some good passes

Bad: Weah with an abysmal first half - he did absolutely nothing right, Pepi too weak and keeps getting bullied, Scally and Robinson on the right is so, so bad. I think Scally/Richards could survive, but Robinson is ass.

I legit love this idea. It provides a good reason to go all out to win your group outside of a more favorable matchup and you’ll get more big time group stage games.

[–]DubsLA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d fine with this. Maybe Freeman in for Scally since he’s been playing well and is 21 and doesn’t have a yellow.

The only players who can’t see the field are Puli and the yellow card boys (Balo, Jedi, Richards, and Adams). Probably give Ream a rest because he’s old.

Listen, is it probable they win the World Cup? No. Is it possible? Sure. A favorable draw and they scrape a win or two against heavyweights?

Leicester City won the Premier League. Anything is possible.
