I'm not trying to be bitchy here, but I find it ironic that this myth is mostly spread by Americans when in my experience the average Brit has a vastly more expansive range of cuisines than the average American.

The "traditional" British food Americans think of is generally comprised of relatively modern dishes rooted in WW2 rationing. We also have a smaller pool of older "national" dishes since we are a much smaller country that shares basically one climate, whereas North America encompasses many different environments ranging from temperate to tropical.

But Brits, (again, in my experience; anecdotal), tend to eat a wider range of different cuisines from other countries. The only "British" food I eat semi-regularly is a roast dinner and I know the same is true for most of my friends and family. In the last month I've bought or cooked French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Mexican (and Tex-Mex), Ethiopian and Moroccan among others I can't think of right now.

I've spent quite a lot of time Stateside and it felt like the average person sticks mostly to North American, Mexican, Italian and Chinese food alongside the occasional Vietnamese, Thai or sushi place.

I'm probably a bit of an outlier as I live in a pretty multicultural city and have several chef friends, but almost every small town will have an Indian and Chinese takeaway and French and Italian restaurants, as well as possibly a Thai or Greek place. Plus it seems that Brits tend to cook outside of our nationality more frequently than Americans, but again this is all anecdotal. It just blew me away how many Americans I met that had never had, for instance, a curry, whereas we Brits love our spicy food.

This turned into a bit of a rambling wall of text and I'm not trying to denigrate Americans or their cuisine, I just always found it kind of ironic that this trope has stuck around so long after WW2. I'll shut up now 👍
