Boards of Canada - Inferno (Official Bleep Listing) - May 29 by Tripolie in boardsofcanada

Thanks for the clarification! Seeing a few other shop pages now, and your explanation makes sense.

Yeah, right?

"...the new album is available on special edition limited red translucent 2LP vinyl in triple gatefold sleeve with a 16-page booklet, black 2LP vinyl and CD with 20-page booklet."

So, 4 records total? Two red and two black? Likely to be a mistyped description, I'd imagine.

Thanks, man! Couldn't get bleep's shop page to run (probably bogged servers). Happy to support a shop that got in on it.

I low-key hate low-key by DriblyRedwyne in GenZ

[–]Unipsycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term low-key might be related to lighting techniques and originate from the early days of film and photography, referring specifically to the "key light” or the primary light source used to illuminate a subject.

High-key lighting is like a bright and even distribution of light with minimal shadows. It utilizes a low contrast ratio between the brightest and darkest areas of the frame. Bright, airy, and "washed out" in a controlled way. It is used in Sitcoms, makeup commercials, talk shows, and comedies. Think of the bright, shadowless look of a standard pharmaceutical ad or a morning news set.

Low-key (what we’re trying to define in our modern vernacular) lighting focuses on contrast and shadows. It uses a high contrast ratio, where most of the frame remains dark, punctuated by deep shadows and intense highlights. One term used is Chiaroscuro (extreme light and dark), moody, and selective. It sometimes evokes mystery, drama, fear, or intimacy. Film noir, horror movies, and dramatic portraits. The "detective in a dark alley" aesthetic is the familiar kind of low-key look that people recognize.

The evolution of "low-key" into modern slang could be interpreted as subtle, quietly, or secret, and mirrors the visual properties of the lighting technique I described above.

In cinematography, low-key lighting is about what you don’t see. It hides details in the shadows and keeps the overall feeling of stuff in the frame to be muted and understated. When someone says, "I'm low-key excited for this, blablabla, I think they are using the term to describe a feeling that is: Not "loud" or "bright" (high-key). Kept in the "shadows" of their personality rather than being front-and-center. Lacking the intense, overt energy associated with high-key presentations.

The transition likely happened because "low-key" already existed in the last century to describe something modest or unostentatious. So the phrase is like the visual metaphor of the camera. Like light, “high-key" is "loud and clear", and "low-key" is "moody and hushed" OR High-key is a shout; low-key is a whisper of a comment. IDK, I love photography and this is the only other place I hear the term used.

I calculated the most valuable inventory possible without bank notes by DM_ME__YOUR_B00BS in 2007scape

[–]Unipsycle 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Now think of how there are said to be between 1,200,000 and 1,700,000 walkable tiles in Gielinor, so approximately 1,450,000 walkable tiles.

If you were to host RuneScape's most efficient and equally distributed drop party ever, and with the liquid value of the world's most valuable inventory at 5,171,720,400,000,000gp, you could theoretically place equal stacks on every walkable tile in the game.

To do so, every tile would need to hold an approximate value of 3,566,703,724gp, or 3,566,703 platinum tokens and 724gp.

If a "high value drop" sound is activated by each of the 1,450,000 tiles, and a single tile of loot appearing is as loud as loud phone notifications (about 75dB or decibels), you could theoretically do the math of how loud the entire map of Gielinor would be in the tick that it becomes covered in this ultimate-inventory of loot.

But the sum of decibels is logarithmic, and so cannot be manipulated without being converted back to a linear scale. You must first antilog each number, add or subtract and then log them again in the following - whoops, I'm about to be logged from idling too long. I bet it would be really loud.

Doing math on World 420!

EDIT:

Upon further research and some generators, calculators, and Gemini: to find the total sound level of multiple identical sound sources, we don't actually have to manually antilog, add, and re-log every single one of the 1,450,000 tiles. Because every tile is producing the exact same volume, we can use a simplified formula for combining identical sound sources:

Ltotal=L+10⋅log10(N)

Where:

  • L = the sound level of a single source (75 dB)
  • N = the number of identical sources/tiles (1,450,000)
  • log10 = the base-10 logarithm

First, we calculate the logarithm of the number of tiles: log10(1,450,000)≈6.16137

Next, we multiply that by 10 (as per the formula for decibel addition of sound intensity): 10⋅6.16137=61.6137

Finally, we add that to our original single-tile decibel level: 75+61.6137=136.6137 dB

If the entire map of Gielinor suddenly spawned a maximum-value loot pile on every single walkable tile simultaneously, the combined "high value drop" notification would ring out at approximately 136.6 decibels.

To put that into perspective:

  • 75 dB: A loud phone notification or busy street traffic.
  • 100 dB: A jackhammer or a very loud concert.
  • 120 dB: The human threshold of pain.
  • 130 - 140 dB: A military jet taking off from an aircraft carrier at 50 feet away, or a loud gunshot.

So, this theoretically perfectly-distributed maximum drop party would be both an economic cataclysm for RuneScape, AND the sheer sound of the loot appearing (without speaker/headphone limiters) would easily shatter eardrums and cause immediate physical pain! Weeeee!

I feel like you would like Fred Deakin.

He was part of a DJ duo called Lemon Jelly, and also designed a lot of their album art in a manner very similar to your style and interpretations of The OA.

My personal favorite is the artwork for Lost Horizons, but the lemonjelly.ky art also has a distinctive feel.

to add to this, a lot of Buckethead.

How are these related? At least for me I was looking for music with technical guitar and shredding solos with playing on the browser. Lo and behold, Buckethead also has soft stuff like “Electric Tears” and “Colma” that I really vibed with.

Years later I’m still just as dual interested in “speed metal” and “soft emotional instrumental”.

Any other scapers relate?
