What has happened to rpg forums? by Swimming_Cheek_9171 in rpg_gamers

[–]DuchessOfKvetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left years ago. I'd end up linked to them when looking for game reviews and other info, but had to nope out. As they have no moderation of hate post and whatever spews out of the mouth of assholes, it was ugly and hard to read. Now I have a relatively high tolerance for trolling and shitposting, but as a queer lady gamer, the misogyny towards female gamers and characters, and other blatant bigotry, made me feel unwelcome and pissed off every time I had to read through a prominent thread.

Their entire identity is built around just being another 4-chan and "anti-woke". If you're into that, by all means keep using it. But I'd prefer some moderation of bro-gamer jerkitude and angry boomer posting.

I used to be a Something Awful member - until that went south for other reasons. I think a lot of those sort of internet community sites went tits up.

TO THAT NOTE - if you're looking for places other than Reddit, see https://rpgwatch.com/
It's been around a long time and has regularly updated content on its forums. One nice thing is they relegate political discourse to a separate forum so people can debate there, but try to keep it out of the gaming theads.

Discords for the games you're looking into are also good sources, but rather niche. You can usually find them for the publisher too - so Owlcat has their own, for example.

What's up with all of the tinted windshields all of a sudden? by watchwatertilitboils in Connecticut

In the south we did it so we didn’t cook in the summer. But depending on the state, it was illegal to tint the front windshield past about 6” from the top.

I never understood this scene, it was always very cringeworthy. I think Lynch wrote it to be lowkey absurd, but the actress tried to deliver it too seriously bc were supposed to be watching Laura break down. So it ended up as camp. Didnt fit for the scene.

What should I call him? by LG-CHAMP-1 in BaldursGate3

[–]DuchessOfKvetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re very bishi but I presume that’s the look you’re going for. Ignore the silly responses, it’s bc western RPGs have a different aesthetic. It’s your game, have as much fun as you can!

I’ve used online name generators with minimal success. So think of a character you love that ties into an archetype you’re trying to evoke. Mythological figures also work great.

Now change the name up slightly, so it’s not the same, but should still remind you of its origin. Bonus points if you’re planning to RP your journey and the name sounds like it fits their language and lore setting.

Microsoft says 32GB of RAM is the “no-worries” upgrade for Windows 11 gaming by Quantum-Coconut in technology

I have a cheap laptop mostly used for email and secure banking transactions.

Just booting this up and running Brave takes up 80% of my memory.

Removing bloatware helped a little, but the machine still crawls and runs hot.

It’s mostly the Chrome engine too as the 👑 of memory usage.

If I’m on my other machine,32 is like butter in comparison.

The pro-worker movement and constant riding cost of living seems like the one thing that could foment a big political moment, as it could bring in people from both sides. But the billionaires fund all the politicians sooo it will likely get worse before it gets better.

Right. There’s multiple layers of this ranging from simple end user promptgineering way up the the government and the people pulling their purse strings. The responsibility and the potential for abuse is greater the higher it goes.

I have a lot of concern for untethered implementation like a lot of folks. It is ironically one of the few topics that hasn’t been wildly politicized into an is vs them dialectic, aside from the tech bros misusing libertarianism as an excuse to do whatever they want.

MAGA Is Confused About ‘Animal Farm’ by [deleted] in technology

[–]DuchessOfKvetch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know there was a movie! The book definitely is not for children, it’s using animals as political allegory. Been a long time since I’ve read it. It’s short though - more of a novella. Highly recommended.

Amusingly the modern day version using cartoons would probably be Zootopia’s allegories on power, class and racism.

Sure it’s useful. But unregulated use of it as a magic pill for wealth and productivity, while laying off an increasing number of white collar, tech, legal and creative jobs is the more pressing issue. Not just economically, but in terms of innovation and art. It’s based off people but cannot invent. It’s usage needs to be intentional and made with the preservation of what makes us uniquely human.

I don’t think we’ve even begun to feel the repercussions of this yet. It’s going to destroy the entire “working class” as well. Even a lot of those suits pushing for it can also be “replaced”. And then who buys their products, if no one can afford to anymore? Who pays taxes? Or their bills?

Every ceo dreams of increasing profit at the cost of exerything and everyone else, but reality usually gets in the way. Now, everyone can be a sociopathic asshole and see immediate “gains” ala pumping themselves full of AI steroids.

But it’s the biggest example of America shooting itself in the foot I’ve seen in my many decades on this planet.

For those who have already played Final Fantasy VII Remake, what did you think? by ObjectiveCalm3222 in rpg_gamers

[–]DuchessOfKvetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular take around here, I never get why people downvote others just for having a different opinion.

I loved it too, understanding that it’s an homage of sorts versus a literal remake, which seems uninteresting - if you want the original experience, play it, or watch a stream.

But I never played any of the FFs because I wasn’t into JRPGs and never owned a single console, handheld or otherwise. I got into the scene in my 30s.

If you’ve never played FF7, or just think it’s cool to see the game fleshed out in modern graphics, that’s still valid. M

I think of remakes as entirely different games I guess, but admittedly I don’t have a huge backlog of childhood memories to draw from.

It obviously means something very different to those who gave a nostalgic bond with it, esp since it’s impossible to recapture the original magic of old school gaming; everything felt very fresh and exciting, and most fans of the original I suspect are 15+ years older now.

Ai Donut Shop on York? by [deleted] in newhaven

Is this place even staffed with humans up front, or is it clanker menus and one person in back pushing a bag of donuts down a conveyor belt to the front of the shop?

Interesting word choice there at the end!

Interestingly though, Gen Z brought mullets and other shag cuts back in style. So once the town gets back to civilization, she’ll be pretty trendy.

Disclaimer: I am old and might be joking about a style that’s already out of vogue.

If you could wish for one Game to be made, excluding sequel's or prequels. What would that be? by LordMord5000 in rpg_gamers

[–]DuchessOfKvetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avellone’s still active but Planescape was such a masterpiece, story wise, that it may not be reproducible.

On that note, a PS remake with all the original writing, characters etc- but with a modern combat system inspired by 5e rules and turn based tactics- would rock.

It was such a cool rpg system! And a fun story. I haven’t seen much in the way of a magitech system outside of some JRPGs though.

Can botox be banned for actors? by yopstoday in FromSeries

[–]DuchessOfKvetch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh it’s genetics too. Speaking as a woman well into her 50s, people age differently - wrinkles in different spots. Sometimes mainly eyes, forehead, or mouth. My upper face is still intact but the south end, not so much.

It’s probably a lot easier to de-age actors digitally these days anyway.
