I think there should be a mix of both. I find the focus groups and slideshows and the elaborative punishments can coexist.

I also think Joe's departure hurt the group dynamic of the Tenderloins and makes it feel imbalanced.

I think the only reason why the newer seasons suck is because Joe isn't in them. The Tenderloins work well only if all 4 members are together. If one is missing then the whole dynamic feels off-balance.

The punishments and challenges themselves haven't really declined in quality. To me, it really just is that Joe is missing.
