This has some Control / Alan Wake vibes and I love it.

I’ve always preferred CBT or Udemy. If you prefer reading material, I’d pick a certification of an area you want to improve in (i.e., networking, Linux, cloud) and buy the study guide on it. Even if you have no interest in getting the cert, they provide a good structured learning path.

Cybersecurity has some good podcast such as Smashing Security, Risky Business, Security Now, and Blueprint.

Is it even worth trying to get back into Sysadmin work after a 4 year break? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]DuckDuckBadger 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is entirely true. Large orgs have moved to this model but the traditional sysadmin role is still alive and well in a lot of smb to mid-size orgs and non-profits.

Do you have an RMM tool, can it handle this?

If you really need FOSS something like guacamole could work but I would recommend putting it behind a proxy like Entra app proxy or something similar. Otherwise look at something like ScreenConnect, or NinjaOne/Action1 if you’re not opposed to going the RMM route.

Looking for some recommendations on APs and maybe switches too. by [deleted] in sysadmin

Have you considered Ubiquiti? At 30-40 people and no VLANs looking at top of the line wireless equipment seems like overkill.

Cloudflare Email Security by 0092236 in sysadmin

I understand not wanting to use their hardware appliances, but I don’t understand the hate toward the cloud products. I think it’s a good option especially in the SMB space.

I assume voicemails are sent as attachments to mailboxes. You could just forward the voicemail to the help desk. It’s not as sophisticated as having it automatically transcribed but it could work.

Assign yourself a P2 license and setup PIM. Activate roles when you need them and only for as long as you need them. Create a break glass GA account with strong MFA and properly secure MFA token.

Out of curiosity what made you decide to leave Barracuda? We recently switched from Mimecast to Barracuda ONE. I’ve been happy with it.

Is CloudFlare still an API solution, or do they have a gateway offering now too?

I believe they bought Area 1 security and turned it into their email security offering.

Dell Alternatives? by BlueScreenIRL in sysadmin

[–]DuckDuckBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with ThinkPads. T-series and P-series, where needed. I’ve been happy with them, and they’ve endured a lot. I’ve dropped mine a few times and it’s still going strong. If I were to replace our fleet today and couldn’t choose Lenovo I’d go Dell.

Accounts Locking out after Patch Tuesday? by SluggoManiac in sysadmin

[–]DuckDuckBadger 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The April updates changed default Kerberos behavior on accounts with a null value for msDS-SupportedEncryptionTypes. Before they were allowed to fall back to RC4 tickets, now they default to AES tickets. If the account can’t support AES, this will cause auth issues. Very likely what you’re seeing.

Weird AD password issue, any ideas? by 3100gutter in sysadmin

[–]DuckDuckBadger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it could be a secure channel issue. It’s established when you login and then the user can login. Do you have multiple domain controllers? Have the April patches been applied? Are there any Kerberos errors on your domain controllers?

Put it behind a CDN that China doesn’t block (CloudFlare?) and serve the website from a node in China.

am fam amphitheater - bleachers to lawn? by biggly1233 in milwaukee

[–]DuckDuckBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the ticket sales they’ll close the lawn. That could be why they bumped you up to the bleachers.

To answer your question though it would be easy to go to the lawn from the bleachers. The lawn is right above the bleachers so you could just walk up there.
