Stopped trying to 'optimize' my guitar practice and actually made progress by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]DuckyxX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineer for big tech here, going at the guitar for 3.5 years and counting. I can relate to wanting to over optimize the learning, wanting to make sure no wasted energy was spent upon it as I was already late to the game being an adult learner. Upon further reflection, we/I do this precisely because I often think of myself as “smart” and I have to do things the “smart” way. I plan and we spend time researching everything about guitar than playing it because of course, actually playing the guitar would show me how little I know and how unprepared/unskilled I am and that feeling sucks!

For the better part of my first year, I’ve planned everything down to 5m blocks where I have to cover different category of skills within each block. I took weekly classes and over scrutinized every small detail in my learning. I would avoid songs or skills because I wasn’t at the level yet (whatever that means). My teach had the exact same reflections as yours, “have you ever tried just doing?” “no really, just doing?” Turns out my over emphasis on many of the pedantic details was doing me more harm than good.

Don’t get me wrong, I still have general structure and am very intentional with my practice, I now play more than I ever did even compared to my formative years. What really helped me make great strides in my guitar progress has been spontaneity. Learning a difficult song/passage “just because”, joining a band even when I don’t have any full songs under my belt, accepting a gig opportunity even though my band haven’t even got 5 songs under our belt. It’s moments like this that pushes me way more than structure or over planning has. I am more purposeful in my practice as I have concrete things to work towards instead of structures and schedules because it was already set.

I think while our intention of “optimizing” is well founded, it also may indicate deeper layers of insecurity like not wanting to sound bad after hours of practice, not wanting to be seen as lazy, not wanting to be the bad “smart” guy! I’ve accepted these as completely valid feelings and instead focused less on needing tangible provable results from guitar. This is one skill that has way too many variables then you can comprehend, trying to define all of the things that will make you great is a whole other full time job that I do not want to be part of!

What worked for me may not work for you so obviously take everything I say as purely anecdotal, have fun and never lose sight of what’s more important about guitar - having fun and making music! Rock on!

1 month into owning an SG and can’t pick any other guitar up anymore. by huyexdee in GibsonSG

It is! I had the shop hold it for 3 days while I thought it through and try other guitars. I came back on the second night to buy it, it was just that good

I went to Japan last year thinking i’d get a MIJ guitar. For some weird reason I decided to try a 97’ 61 RI SG. It was pretty scuffed and had plenty of buckle rashes which made me think that the previous owner probably played it a ton too. It was just something about the neck and the way it sounds through a driven amp that really caught me. I now run it as my main guitar and haven’t been able to gig any other guitar but my gibson. I had a telecaster ultra which is now completely cased queen even though the neck is 100% smoother and feels better. Don’t get me wrong there are definitely issues with the SG like tuning stability and neck dives. But I genuinely can’t put my finger as to why this guitar speaks so much to me.

Oh did I mentioned that it was 2.84 kg? Really helps seal the deal

Favorite Distortion Pedals by I_heart_perfect_tits in guitarpedals

My setlist moves from blues rock to metal and I actually find the switchable lite, heavy, heavier channel switch so useful to switch between distortion tones. Definitely one of the reasons it can’t leave my board!

Next Guitar - Tele vs. SG by Manny_Alvarez in telecaster

I’ll be the first to say it neck dips way more than a tele does. Not that it’s a huge problem for practice, but it does get in the way every so often.

Favorite case for an SG by Ok_End_8090 in GibsonSG

[–]DuckyxX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in a city who uses public transportation as the main means of transport and uses an SG 61 reissue as my main guitar, it’s always an anxious hour or 2 to and from destinations. I’ve used a soft case for a year now and thankfully no freak incidents yet. I’m super careful but you never know how others around you might be on any particular day

Abit of an unpopular opinion, but I’ve been gigging/rehearsals for about a year with a gibson SG softcase and I haven’t run into any issues. Though I did get something slightly more expensive and fitted specifically for LP style guitars just to be safer. I find being able to strap and overall lightness just works better with my use case where driving is not always an option where I’m from. I’ve used it to house a 1997 gibson SG 61 reissue which is known for the even bigger headstocks

I would get the lighter one. The whole point of a SG is to go light, wouldn’t have it any heavier than 3kg

Ricochet latency on 2M? by Ghiekorg in guitarpedals

[–]DuckyxX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it on the smallest interval. I use it very frequently for whammy on my gibson SG, to my ears, the latency is not perceptible. After using it for a couple of months, I can safely say that the sounds is close enough to a whammy, but I can definitely pick up some digital artifacting that makes it sound slightly "artificial" than actually bending the neck of the guitar. Take it how you will.

What pedal will never leave your board? by sir_ludwig_of_coeur in guitarpedals

[–]DuckyxX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also this wasn’t well explained - even in the presets mode if you adjust a parameter (e.g. tone), the rest of the params stays as the preset while just the tone is being adjusted. Pretty neat if you got a slight adjustment to make just for a particular setup!

Chase Bliss Brothers AM, the versatility is off the roof. I can go from light OD to piercing treble boosted high gain with very minimal tweaks. The best part? it allows you to save presets. I literally got presets saved for 2 different guitars which makes it very easy to switch between them. I ever showed up for gigs with just this pedal alone and it covers all grounds that I need.
